....cars and bicycles/pedestrians don't mix well, never have, never will....

....I was out on my bike trail a while back and a guy in his late-teens early twenties flew past me cruising at least 20 mph. This guy was doing some serious traveling and there are millions like him. With an elaborate interstate bike trail system people could travel safely off the public roads. Local travel and/or long-distance, this could mean billions of unburnt gallons of gasoline.

....let's build a first-class interstate bike trail system to parallel every major US and Interstate highway in the country to be paid for by a tax on gasoline.

....would you support a nationwide $.50 a gallon increase in gasoline to build such a system?

....support the building of an interstate bike trail system even though I'd probably never use it....but I know millions of other people would....

....if your car yields 25 mpg and you were to take your bike on a 12 mile round-trip, you would have traded lunch for a gallon of gas....

....since you ate lunch anyway, that's a tangable savings of CO2 and other crap....even I could do a 12 mile round-trip, so I'm sure others would have no problem using a bike instead of a car for travel....

....most people just feel unsafe on a highway with vehicle traffic wizzing by, because they are unsafe....

used to do it when I was younger, but of course not long distances.

Of course, with a family it can get tough, at least till the kidlets are older.

Still a cool idea though.

also, somehow we need to reduce the open hostility car driving ppl give to those who bicycle. they need re-education or something? :shrug:

....have to risk your life and compete with cars and trucks on the highway....you should have your own safe space to travel within, you pay taxes too, don't you?....with every turn of your crank you're saving the planet and doing Gods' work....

....let those loud eco-talking politicians pass genuine earth-friendly legislation creating a bike trail system and send the bill to those gas-guzzling SUV'ers who are not saving the planet and doing Gods' work....
