Film an eye-opener for politician

July 24, 2007 - For years, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore has been terrorizing politicians south of the border.

Now, he's getting his chance to stir the pot here in Canada. Recently, nurses with the Peel Chapter of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) invited Mississauga East MPP Peter Fonseca to catch a screening of Moore's latest film, Sicko.

The film takes a hard look at the American health care system and compares and contrasts it with the Canadian model.

"Our (politicians) hold the future of (health care) in their hands," said co-chair of the Peel Chapter of RNAO, Norma Nicholson. "If they've ever doubted the merits of the Canadian system or wondered if we'd benefit from for-profit health care, this film will bring them back to reality very quickly."

Shortly after stepping out of the film, Fonseca told The News it steeled his resolve to keep Canadian health care in the public's hands.

"The film was a real eye-opener for me in terms of where we don't want to go," said Fonseca. "I was planning on going to see the movie, but it was interesting to see it with two nurses and hear their perspective. I think it has strengthened my conviction (that our system is on the right path)." ......(more)
