But you need one to get back in.

No, wait. That's been postponed for the summer.

3. I believe you can until September as long as
you've got the paperwork indicating that you've applied for a US passport and are waiting for it to be processed.

4. Now you can.
I think on January 1, 2008 that you need a passport.

If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

But as of right now, yes.

12. we just crossed into MI from Canada, and I wish we had the Nexus
it took over an hour to get in. Getting into Canada from NY was a snap and the border people were very friendly, wish I could say the same on our side. :(

8. You always COULD drive TO Canada, you needed the PP
to get back into tje US! Until Se[t. there's een a suspension of that requirement due to the inefficiencies of the State Dept, but unless they extend the suspension, the PP requirement to return to the US will again go into effect.

13. Because my husband is here?

If I had my choice I would be moving back there and my husband and kids with me. I do miss it. But hubby loves his family and wants to be near them. He did, however, suggest that since I am taking the kids to Vermont, I should make the extra trip and show them Montreal. I can teach them about Canada and throw in a French lesson to boot.

15. Yes
But you need a vehicle.

As I understand the present status, getting into Canada is not a problem if one is a citizen of the US or Mexico.

http://gocanada.about.com/od/canadatraveloverview/qt/uscitizenborder.htm

After searching a bit, it seems like some of the recommendations are to have a proof of citizenship. Used to be, that the agents could tell by the accents if you were actually from the areas that you claim.

Hope that you have good weather if you visit.

17. Be ready to answer the questions
A long time ago we lived in Buffalo, NY, for a while, and so we traveled back and forth between the US and Canada quite frequently--sometimes for a weekend in Toronto, more often to get take-out Chinese food across the way in Fort Erie. At any rate, there are a stock set of questions you are asked when crossing the border into Canada: Where do you live? Where are you going? What is the purpose of your trip? Etc.

One day, a friend and I were crossing the border at the Peace Bridge, and a tired and bored customs agent asked the following: Agent: Where do you live? Us: Buffalo. Agent: Why? My friend and I looked at each other, grasping for an answer, and finally turned to the agent: We have no idea, it sucks! The embarrassed and annoyed agent passed us through. We laughed heartily.

Upon returning to the U.S. always declare something stupid: Chinese food works well. Hungarian noodles is also passable.

18. Even now, you don't yet need a passport to return. Birth certificate and photo ID will do.
And that's even on a BUS--and bus passengers get treated the strictest of all.

But...the day is coming soon when you will need the passport. Apply early (but not often).

20. We drove into Sault Ste Marie, Ontario with nothing more than a current driver's license
Edited on Sat Jul-21-07 08:03 PM by irkthesmirk
However, we were told that we needed a birth certificate to drive from Detroit to Windsor, Ontario. Your best bet is to check with the embassies before you go. As far as I know, you won't need a passport until the first of next year. You only need to have applied for a passport if you are travelling by air or sea. Travel by car and fresh water does not require that you have applied for a passport.
