Wexler, Waters, Schiff, Wasserman Agree To Meet On Impeachment
Posted by nytexan on July 20th, 2007

There’s still hope to have Cheney impeached and more in Congress are listening.

It’s time — ImpeachForPeace.org is heading to Washington DC to meet with Representatives! On Thursday, July 26th, we’ll be presenting reps with thousands of petitions formally initiating the impeachment of Vice President Richard Cheney.

ImpeachForPeace.org members along with David Swanson of After Downing Street will meet with Rep. Maxine Waters and the offices of Rep. Adam Schiff, Rep. Robert Wexler, and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and other representatives as they are available. These House Reps are part of the Judiciary Committee, which currently has a resolution (House Resolution 333) to impeach Vice President Cheney. We’ll be presenting the petitions and urging these representatives to support impeachment on behalf of the majority of Americans who have indicated that they support the impeachment of Vice President Cheney.

“Do-It-Yourself” Impeachment Petitions are described under the House Rules, Jefferson’s Manual Section LIII. They constitute a legal means of initiating the impeachment process, and were successfully used in 1830 to impeach Federal Judge James Peck. This method is the only means by which an individual citizen can legally initiate the impeachment of a federal official. While only one such citizen’s petition is necessary to begin the process, thousands of these are to be delivered on Friday.

1. Don't you think it would be better to start with Gonzales?
If a real AG were in that spot much else would fall into place. They also have him cold on perjury, at very least.

14. I was thinking the same thing, I think
An Impeachment inquiry for Gonzales would create an undeniable legislative need for the testimony of Meirs and Bolten, thereby trumping Bush's executive privilege defense. Is that what you mean by "fall into place?"

2. Maybe Swanson will make jokes about how Bush/Cheney** has photos of them...
...since he thinks that kind of rudeness will help the IMPEACHMENT movement.

7. NEVER GIVE UP
It may take five or it may take fifty, but we will win only if we stick to it, and never give up.

11. You can be for it or against it, and assess its chances, but please do NOT dismiss
any such citizen effort as "a joke."

Yes, I can imagine politicians and their aides and their political consultants and their big donors, and the corporate lapdogs who called themselves journalists, snickering about it in the back room. But WE shouldn't do that, not only because it depresses and disempowers people, but also because it is ever groups of citizens and lone individuals who are willing to take ridicule and marginalization and defeat after defeat, and yet persist in a just cause, who bring about change. It is not the cynics who bring about change, nor the jaded, nor the easily defeated. It is not those who need leaders or "stars" to join their cause. The people who change things for the better are those who are certain of the justice of their cause, and persist no matter the odds.

As I said, feel free to assess its chances--as you say, "right now"--but please do not call it "a joke." In doing so, you side with entrenched power--that is THEIR view--against the citizens and their just cause, whom I am certain do not consider their petition, and their hard work, "a joke."

I wasn't aware of this "do it yourself" rule. I know that any one state legislature and a grand jury can initiate impeachment proceedings in the House, that immediately becomes a privileged resolution (all House business must stop to consider it). But I was not aware that individual citizens could do this, and that it only takes one. That Jefferson was quite the fellow. He really, really, REALLY wanted impeachment to be "on the table"--always, as a constant check on the powerful--and included every way he could think of to make it feasible. If the President becomes a tyrant, Congress can impeach him. If the Congress fails to do so, the states could prod Congress with a formal bill of impeachment. If the states fail, a grand jury could do it. And if all of these fail, the people could do it. And if groups of people fail, ONE CITIZEN can do it.

So many failsafes to prevent tyranny!

I applaud Mr. Jefferson, and the people who are presenting this petition. We're down to the last failsafe--the people. We should be giving them as much support and encouragement as possible.

I know that there are around 130 members of the House. Come on. Only 14 have signed on so far. That is pathetic.
