Romney Gets Slapped by Mormon Newspaper
Edited on Mon Jul-16-07 11:09 AM by Bluebear
'The Desert (sic) News of Salt Lake City is owned by the Mormon church. But that didn't stop the editorial board from ripping presidential candidate Mitt Romney about his time on the board of Marriott when the company was making money hand over fist from pornographic videos.

The Brody File broke this story FIRST. Since then, the Associated Press and others have followed with pieces of their own and it has spread. Below is the first part of the editorial:

"Pornography taints everything it touches. Mitt Romney should have understood that. So should the Marriott Corporation and other hotel owners who offer hard-core movies in hotel rooms. Romney caught a bit of flack last week because he spent nearly 10 years on the Marriott board and yet never tried to reverse the company's policy of providing pornography on demand, something J.W. 'Bill' Marriott Jr., defended in a 2000 letter as being economically important..For a presidential candidate who has railed against pornography, this is not entirely insignificant. Even if the subject never came up at a board meeting, one can argue that at least part of the $25,000 plus stock he was paid annually for his board membership came from the money some hotel guests paid for access to the films."

It's never a good thing when your own church gets on your case but I wonder how much this will hurt Romney. I don't think the story by itself is a major issue but groups determined to take him down will try and lump the Marriott story into a wider argument about how Romney says one thing and does another.'

edit: to add sic at citation of the Deseret News.

1. Did Romney invest in the company that makes Vitter's diapers?
Voters want to know.

4. Ha! NOBODY's good enough for these loonies!
Not that I like Romney, he's a slime....but JEEZ! He's the only Repub that hasn't been caught in affairs, divorced,
etc.

Did they forget there is no non-human candidate? They crack me up. :wtf:

What do you expect? He's a businessman? That's why he goes where the wind blows - that's how he's made all
that money. Maybe they should ponder that for a while.

5. I would think this would hurt him with the Fundies & the Mormons!
Fundies get their panties in a wad when they even HEAR the word "porn" and I suspect they would join the Mormons in thinking Mittens should have worked overtime while on that board to change Marriott policy, even though one single board member really doesn't have the power to do that!

7. I knew the fundies would break this story
though their stances on moral issues generally align with the mormon church, they consider mormonism a heresy so it's a pretty uncomfortable alliance, and they've been talking about Marriot's on-demand porn for years. I remember hearing them talk about it on Today's Issues--a talk show on Don Wildmon's American Family Radio--several years ago. It only makes sense that they would use this information against Romney.

Oh, how fun it is to watch the infighting!

8. It's the "Deseret" News. Deseret was the old Mormon name for their theocratic
independent state back in the 1800s.........
