Foley spends nearly $300,000 in legal fees
By Jackie Kucinich
July 16, 2007

Former Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.) paid nearly $300,000 in legal fees in the second quarter of 2007, according to the most recent Federal Election Commission filings.

The fees were incurred in the first three months of 2007 and were paid to the Florida-based law firm Zuckerman Spaeder.

Despite the legal fees, Foleys campaign committee has maintained a healthy war chest of $1,458,275 cash on hand.

Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-Fla.) defeated Republican Florida state Rep. Joe Negron in the race for Foleys seat last year. Due to the timing of his resignation from Congress in the wake of the congressional page scandal, Foleys name remained on the ballot.

1. Why does he get to use campaign money to cover legal fees?
Or were these legal fees related to a campaign, and not to the page scandal?

I imagine this must be legal under the law, but it seems to me that it shouldn't be.
