America's first Muslim congressman has provoked outrage by apparently comparing President George W Bush to Adolf Hitler and hinting that he might have been responsible for the September 11 attacks.

Addressing a gathering of atheists in his home state of Minnesota, Keith Ellison, a Democrat, compared the 9/11 atrocities to the destruction of the Reichstag, the German parliament, in 1933. This was probably burned down by the Nazis in order to justify Hitler's later seizure of emergency powers.

"It's almost like the Reichstag fire, kind of reminds me of that," Mr Ellison said. "After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it, and it put the leader of that country in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted."

4. What you're really saying is, that Bush is vastly inferior to Hitler

and I agree, that Hitler was probably a much smarter person and Hitler showed far more personal courage in the military service, than Bush has ever shown.

The NaziCons that back Bush though, are far more powerful and better equipped militarily, monetarily, organizationally and they utilize a greatly superior propaganda apparatus, than Hitler ever dreamed of being, having or using. 12. Holocaust

As someone whose relatives lived thru Germany in the 1930's, can we please STOP all this subtle praising of Hitler? It is just ridiculous. All this junk that he was more artistic, and braver, and an eloquent speaker, etc. Is our collective memory that short? The man was a F'ing psychopath who ordered millions of men, women, and children killed. Why this urge to find reasons to praise the man? It just makes us look like fools when you praise -- even subtly -- Hitler. I guess we should also praise PolPot and Amin too?

I don't care who the current President of this country is; he is not anywhere close to Hitler. But if you want to marginalize yourself, and have your views condemned as being fringe-whacko-left, by all means continue saying how Bush is like Hitler.

It wasn't a personal attack at all, and it wasn't sly. I wasn't responding to your post per se, but it is emblematic of those who say Hitler was smart, talented, artistic, eloquent, etc. Who cares? As a style of argument, the quickest way to marginalize yourself is to invoke the Bush/Hitler/Nazi argument. Hitler ordered killed millions of his own citizens, as well as those from neighboring countries. He planned the destruction of an entire race/religion.

My point is that you can disagree vehemently and legitimately with this Admin without having to invoke the Hitler thing. Personally, I don't think Bush is like Hitler at all. He's misguided, wrong-headed, incompetent, and a liar, but that is a far cry from setting up concentration camps in the US to dispose of the unwanted. Just a minor point, I guess.

It took Hitler almost 10 years to get to the stage where he was mass murdering the Jews. Halliburton has been building prison camps all over the country. The Germans didn't believe Hitler was killing all those people for about 15 years.

We invaded Iraq and now the death toll there is over a half million people by some accounts and we are killing hundreds more every week. We have tortured and murdered POWs. We have a government that is spying on us and ignoring the rule of law and shredding our Constitution. We are getting ready to invade Iran. WHY?

We will agree to disagree then. A couple points, though. Although the Final Solution did not really get going until 1942 (nine years after Hitler took office), the Nazis were setting up camps soon after 1933 in an effort to imprison/torture/kill enemies of the state. All of the famous camps we all know about were established before 1940. Hitler killed many of his own citizens even before the Final Solution, including the ill, elderly, mentally challenged, etc. Personally, I see no evidence of Bush doing anything even remotely similar. If you could point to specific instances of US citizens being rounded up, imprisoned, killed, etc., please share with me. I'd be very curious.

As an attorney, I have to object to your method of arguing. You can't ask someone to prove he hasn't done something anymore than you can ask a criminal defendant to prove he didn't commit the crime. Can you imagine? The police arrest a guy on suspicion of rape, then tell him, "Prove to me you didn't rape her." Now THAT is facsism. You're the one making allegations, so it is you who has the burden of proof.

I also don't have any evidence that Bush is NOT secretly plotting with the Emperor of Mars to find way to steal the molimdinum from underneath the surface of Venus. Guess that means he is doing it.

Ellison does NOT say "Bush is like Hitler" nor does he claim Bush planned 9/11 the way the article states.
