Portugal legalises abortion
From yesterday a "law legalising abortion up to the 10th week of pregnancy has come into force in Portugal, putting it on a par with most European countries that allow the practice."

It will be free of charge and it will help (I hope) women to make a free choice without depending on the "vultures" that - with more or less professionality, but surely well-paid practises - operate in 23000 clandestine abortion cases every year.

"The mostly Roman Catholic country also grants doctors the right to refuse to carry out abortions on moral grounds, with some estimates suggesting up to 80 per cent will object", reports Al Jazeera.

"Local media reported that at least nine regional hospitals in Portugal will not carry out abortions because doctors there object to them", which means a good start in a tradional country.

This is good news from Europe: making decisions free and not letting any religious statement define the way one must live his own life - that helps democracy grow.

Ciao!

1. Good news!
Here's an article from the 'Guardian' about the run-up to this.

2. Good news, indeed...
"Parliament voted overwhelmingly to legalise abortion after the referendum, in February." (The Guardian)

Not many news like this in recent times. It's good for Portuguese women and democracy in a strongly Roman Catholic Country.
It's very sad how often I have to use "Roman Catholic" in opposition to progressive and democracy...

Thank you for the article!

:hi:
