I did not care at all for her husband's politics, but when I saw her at the casket at Reagan's funeral, I could not help but shed a tear.

7. Me too. But...
But I thought the overall grimness of the service was out of place for a man who died in his mid-90s and led a great life.

I thought it was just petty not to have Clinton speak. She thought he defamed the presidency.

I didn't even sign on to DU, just spent it with the family, watching the funeral.

The Reagan kids gave beautiful eulogies.

knew her personally and did not care one bit for her.

31. Don't feel funny...I cried like a baby at Ronnie's funeral coverage

Not just seeing Nancy at the coffin, but those darned cowboy boots of his, turned backwards, in the stirrups on the saddle of the black horse. That still chokes me up.

it made me think about my Nana after my Granpa died, they were married for something like 55 years and when he died it really hit her hard, i was distraught to be honest and i had a really hard time letting go.

29. It's just a shame that they were married on the same day that Shrub was born!
I'm sure they're aware of that by now. Hope they don't think about that too much on their wedding anniversaries which is pretty significant when you think they've been married as long as this bum's been living!

over Saint Ronnie's funeral?

It was the June before the '04 elections, after all.

I still remember that he insisted on walking into Three Mile Island to demonstrate to the nation that the crisis had been handled. That took a pair! :toast: Chimpy would have been on AF One headed for Nebraska and points beyond.

I hope that the whole lot of living prezzes and widows show up at their funerals. It's just the proper thing to do.

My heart really did go out to her when RR died. I kept hoping the cameras would let her be, actually.

20. Also see: RW hypocrite" comments on Paul Wellstone's funeral. Here's a link
(admittedly gossipy) on cheney's behavior.

http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0423,mondo5,54258,6.html

Basically, Cheney made it a rah-rah Republican affair--and Nancy, who has always been big on decorum, like her or not, was clearly not happy about it. She was clearly very upset and would have preferred a subdued ceremony, IMHO.

25. Jimmy Carter has always been a lovely man
He's old now and what I remember of him was his tenderness, kindness, honesty. Then I look at Nancy Reagan. She's old now, and all I remember of hers was her pettiness, cruelty, meanness, a certain brutality, and shallowness.

Also, you can't count on the Washington Press corps to be fair to First Ladies. Even when the President is beloved, the First Lady can be trashed over nothing at all.

but in her later years after my mother died I got to be very close with her and she even said she had made many mistakes earlier in life and regretted much of her behavior. I was genuinely grief stricken when she died a few months ago, people can change.

About 2 years ago. We spoke for maybe 30 seconds. He wanted to know about the pin I was wearing for a local politcal race. That twinkle in his eye made me feel like I was the only person in the room.
