AP) Green Bay, Wis. The granddaughter of state Sen. Dave Hansen was killed Friday after Hansen said he accidentally drove over her in his car.

The accident happened at Hansen's home in Green Bay at about 8:40 a.m.

Hansen said in the statement issued by his legislative office in Madison that he was leaving to attend a meeting when his granddaughter ran out of the house and got behind his car. Hansen said neither he nor his wife knew the girl had run outside.

The girl, Elliana Zaidel, was to have turned 2 on Wednesday.

Hansen said he is in deep shock and attending to the needs of his family.

25. All of the time!
They will wander, explore, run off, be called away by imaginary friends, climb in to holes and disappear, chase balls out in to the street and lastly but not leastly...run out into the yard or driveway to say goodbye to grandparents.
My heart is with the family.

13. So Sorry Ellie, Baby Girl

Hansen and his wife have baby-sat the girl for about a year while her parents worked. The toddler was sitting on a sofa when her grandmother left the room to get a blanket so the two could snuggle after the senator left for his meeting, Wadd said.

The girl then ran outside.

"It happened that fast," Wadd said. "I think Ellie wanted to be with grandpa. She just loved him."

 I'm very certain your grandpa felt the same way about you.

Condolences to the family.

15. How terribly sad
This has always been a fear for me. We've been very very careful about the location of our daughter whenever we back out of the driveway. She's old enough now and understands the danger so she's careful as well. But I can't even imagine how nightmarish it would be to realize you'd done that. :(

Poor little girl :( And poor grandpa and the rest of her family. :(

16. Heartbreaking. And it happens more than people realize.
I backed over my dog many years ago and almost killed him...now I ALWAYS look behind and under the car before I back out of the garage or driveway. I can't even imagine how awful it would be to kill a child that way.
