Who are the Izzy Stones of today?
I just picked up Al Gore's latest book and read the index first. I noticed that he quotes I.F. Stone's book In A Time of Torment. I retrieved that book from my shelf and started thinking about how great Stone was as a journalist: tenacious, uncompromising, witty, smart, capable of digging up gems that are hiding in plain sight.

Who's doing similar work today?

I can't think of anybody but if they're out there I'd love to know who they are.

3. I think of Thomas and Stone as very different
They're both great journalists but they had different methods. Thomas works for a large employer and is most famous for her press conference questions.

Stone worked for himself and was famous for avoiding press conferences, preferring to get his scoops by digging through documents.

4. We are, actually
Just as I. F. Stone had to publish his own weekly to get his ideas out there in those kneejerk anticommunist time, so we have to turn to the web to share our research and run ideas past each other.

5. The problem is that "we" aren't as smart and articulate as Stone
I love ability of the Net to share information but I don't have time to read every progressive post that might pop up in a given day. The beauty of Stone is that he could cut to the chase and provide a reader with valuable information in a short period of time.

That's why I was asking for recommendations of people who were doing similar work today.
