Report: Gonzales Knew of FBI Violations

By LAURIE KELLMAN
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats raised new questions Tuesday about whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales knew about FBI abuses of civil liberties when he told a Senate committee that no such problems occurred.

Lying to Congress is a crime, but it wasn't clear if Gonzales knew about the violations when he made his statements to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

On April 27, 2005, while seeking renewal of the broad powers granted law enforcement under the USA Patriot Act, Gonzales told the Senate Intelligence Committee, "There has not been one verified case of civil liberties abuse" from the law enacted after the 9/11 terror attacks.

Six days earlier, the FBI had sent Gonzales a copy of a report that said its agents had obtained personal information to which they were not entitled.

2. Even if he is convicted he has the bu$h get out of jail free card in his pocket
I fear that nothing will stop these monsters. They are like the beast that was allowed to grow to the point it became too large to manage and control.
Now we have the mega powerful regime to deal with who have proclaimed themselves above all laws.

17. Jonathan Turley was on KO last night
Seemed frustrated that Gonzo has not been impeached.

Cited the fact that the Justice Department has been overhauled to the point of dewstruction. Apparently Turley thinks that the imepachment of Gonzo would be a slam dunk.

8. nope-he is never leaving as long as Bush is in the WH
He's breaking the law, hiding all of the ways that their breaking the law. He wouldn't leave because it would risk himself, and they wouldn't fire him because the next person maybe wouldn't go along with their schemes (like Ashcroft) or maybe uncover more that no one knows about. It's symbiotic, they're running out the clock betting that Congress doesn't have what it takes to stop them. Unfortunately, it seems like they are right.

15. it's so incredible that gonzales is still there
Conservatives hate his guts, so do liberals. I use www.freerepublic.com as sort of a gauge of the common opinion of the conservative base, and they want his friggin head on a plate (for totally different reasons than us - something having to do with the immigration fiasco and him being part of the dreaded LA RAZA). So how is he still there? I think at this point Bush just makes it up as he goes, I doubt he is advisable any more
