"The Reason Why Everyone Wants Al Gore To Run" (From Randi's Show)
Edited on Tue Jul-10-07 12:25 AM by orleans
"the reason why everyone wants al gore to run (and here's my analogy to the republicans who are listening) he's like fred thompson but with brains. and a heart. and an amazing love for this planet and this country that i have never seen before in my life--and i have met the 42nd president of the united states many times...but i have to tell you: that man, this man and his wife...they have a love for this country that i haven't seen in a very, very long time. He is a wonderful brainiac, an amazing human being who loves this country."

14. I thought I noticed that when he spoke at the concert in NY
I hate our obsession with weight and it made me mad that I noticed (because I don't think it makes one bit of difference) but I immediately got all excited that it's another hint to his candidacy.

My heart needs Al to be president. I need to believe again. I know he's just a human and he's not perfect but Al in the White House would be a healing balm for the heartache of the past 7 years. I don't care if that's not logical. As a nation we've certainly done a lot of other things based on our hearts and gut reactions, I think we're long overdue in having that turn out to be a good thing.

And I haven't forgiven Gore for picking Lieberman and especially not fighting to have the votes counted in 2000. Bring in some new blood already.

5. watch Fahrenheit 9/11 again. watch the scene with the black caucus
watch as al gore had to preside over his own demise, asking if any of the congress members had gotten a senator to sign off on their motion to contest the vote in florida. and maxine waters saying she didn't care that she didn't have a senator's signature (because the need was so great/because the black caucus was right in contesting the vote count) and al gore having to say "well, the rules care" (or something to that effect)

it's fucking heartbreaking.

he was the vice president

he needed the signature of just one senator

i tear up every time i see that scene (which i never knew happened until fahrenheit)

12. You have to understand Gore's position
After the 2000 election, Gore fought to get all the votes counted in Florida, but he had to stay within the limits of the State and Federal law. So it meant requesting recounts in selected counties - not State-wide.

Gore fought for 35 days, exploring all the options that were available to him under the law.

The mainstream media was full of voices calling for "closure". They were not focusing on the fraud!

Many people figured that the election was a "tie" and it was the Republicans "turn" to have the Whitehouse.

GOP staffers and their buddies were using physical intimidation and threats of violence to shut-down the recounts.

Most of our elected Democrats in the House and Senate were not willing to stand up and be counted.

On December 12th, when the Supreme Court voted 5-4 to shut-down the recounts in Florida, it was clear to Al Gore that there were no other options available to him under the law that would have a chance of changing the outcome.

He decided that it would be in the best interests of the country for him to accept the Supreme Court's ruling - even though he strongly disagreed with it.

As the GOP had a majority in both houses of Congress, there was no possibility that Congress would change the outcome. Not even if there had been a debate on January 6th, 2001.

Al Gore took the view that, after 35 days of uncertainty following the election, it would not be in the country's interest to re-open that issue just 2 weeks before inauguration day. It would look like the Democrats were divided over his decision to accept the Supreme Court's ruling, which would also have serious constitutional implications.

Basically there was nothing to be gained by opening up what was still at that time a fresh and deep wound.

I know it is difficult to watch that footage. I'm sure Al Gore cannot stand to watch it. Me neither.

24. If he had gotten the signature of one senator and the FLA votes had been dismissed -
because they were not "regular" the case would've been kicked up to SCOTUS -- the same damn court that had just ruled against him in allowing the votes to be counted.

As Al has said (paraphrasing) -- there is no intermediate step between a decisive SCOTUS ruling and violent revolution.

It is heartbreaking -- but it wasn't Al's fault.

6. boohoo
I'm not a big fan of Tipper's either but people (almost all men) need to get over their fear of her trying to take away their toys. Relax boys, corporate America will never let anyone (especially a woman) take away the porn, video games or violent TV and movies.

Save your hate for someone with some actual power. Even if she were 1st lady, she wouldn't have the power to do that.

8. Um, lyrics. PMRC
Edited on Tue Jul-10-07 02:42 AM by Hissyspit
Free speech. You didn't mention lyrics.

Even Al said some stupid things during those Senate hearings. My main point is that the music hearings were not Al's finest hour, and it was mainly Tipper's cause, and it was embarrassing. A long time ago, of course.

MORE:

The PMRC claimed that popular music, especially rock music, was partially responsible for the contemporary increase in rape, teenage pregnancy, and teen suicide. The group's mission was "to educate and inform parents" about "the growing trend in music towards lyrics that are sexually explicit, excessively violent, or glorify the use of drugs and alcohol," and to seek the censorship and rating of music.

Background and formation
In October 1984, the National Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) sent a letter to the 30 record labels and to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), proposing the music industry label records that contained "explicit lyrics or content", in order to "take the element of surprise out of buying an album". However, initially none of the record companies agreed to the PTA's proposal. A response letter from RIAA President Stanley Gortikov stated that: "There are wide variations, company to company, within our industry in respect to artists, contractual relationships, marketing considerations and product services."

The formation of the PMRC began in 1984 after Tipper Gore, along with her daughter Karenna, heard Prince's song "Darling Nikki." This track, which appears on the soundtrack to the film Purple Rain, contains references to sex and masturbation:

I knew a girl named Nikki
I guess you could say she was a sex fiend
I met her in a hotel lobby
Masturbating with a magazine

Gore watched other rock music videos and concluded: "The images frightened my children, they frightened me! The graphic sex and the violence were too much for us to handle." Susan Baker became alarmed after hearing her seven-year-old daughter singing along with Madonna songs that Baker considered "suggestive." Gore and Baker, along with Howar and Nevius, formed the PMRC in May 1985.

The PMRC claimed that the change in rock music was attributable to the decay of the nuclear family in America. Gore asserted that families are "haven(s) of moral stability" which protect children from outside influence, and without the family structure rock music was "infecting the youth of the world with messages they cannot handle."

Actions
As a method of combating this alleged problem, the PMRC suggested a voluntary move by the RIAA and the music industry to develop "guidelines and/or a rating system" similar to the MPAA film rating system. Additional suggestions from the PMRC that appeared in an article in the Washington Post included: printing warnings and lyrics on album covers, forcing record stores to put albums with explicit covers under the counters, pressuring television stations not to broadcast explicit songs or videos, "reassess" the contracts of musicians who performed violently or sexually in concert, and creating a panel to set industry standards. This article led to the removal of rock music and magazines from American stores including Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney, Sears, and Fred Meyer.

The PMRC also released the "Filthy Fifteen", a list of the fifteen songs they found most objectionable:

# Artist Song title Lyrical content
1 Prince "Darling Nikki" Sex/Masturbation
2 Sheena Easton "Sugar Walls" Sex
3 Judas Priest "Eat Me Alive" Sex
4 Vanity "Strap on Robbie Baby" Sex
5 Mötley Crüe "Bastard" Violence
6 AC/DC "Let Me Put My Love into You" Sex
7 Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It" Violence
8 Madonna "Dress You Up" Sex
9 W.A.S.P. "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)" Sex/Language
10 Def Leppard "High 'n' Dry (Saturday Night)" Drug and Alcohol Use
11 Mercyful Fate "Into the Coven" Occult
12 Black Sabbath "Trashed" Drug and Alcohol Use
13 Mary Jane Girls "In My House" Sex
14 Venom "Possessed" Occult
15 Cyndi Lauper "She Bop" Sex/Masturbation

The PMRC also advocated against supposed subliminal backmasking in records, and accused bands including Led Zeppelin, Rush, Pink Floyd and Queen of backmasking to promote Satanism and drug use.

Senate hearing
Transcript
In August 1985, 19 record companies agreed to put "Parental Guidance: Explicit Lyrics" labels on albums to warn of explicit lyrical content. However, before the labels could be put into place, the Senate agreed to hold a hearing on so-called "porn rock". This began on 19 September 1985, when representatives from the PMRC, three musicians, and Senators Paula Hawkins and Al Gore testified before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on "the subject of the content of certain sound recordings and suggestions that recording packages be labeled to provide a warning to prospective purchasers of sexually explicit or other potentially offensive content."

- snip -

Opposing witnesses
During his statement, musician and producer Frank Zappa asserted that "the PMRC proposal is an ill-conceived piece of nonsense which fails to deliver any real benefits to children, infringes the civil liberties of people who are not children, and promises to keep the courts busy for years dealing with the interpretational and enforcemental problems inherent in the proposal's design." He went on to state his suspicion that the hearings were a front for H.R. 2911, a proposed blank tape tax: "The major record labels need to have H.R. 2911 whiz through a few committees before anybody smells a rat. One of them is chaired by Senator Thurmond. Is it a coincidence that Mrs. Thurmond is affiliated with the PMRC?" Zappa had earlier stated about the Senate's agreement to hold a hearing on the matter that "A couple of blowjobs here and there and Bingo! — you get a hearing."<1>

Folk rock musician John Denver stated he was "strongly opposed to censorship of any kind in our society or anywhere else in the world", and that in his experience censors often misinterpret music, as was the case with his song "Rocky Mountain High". In addition, Denver expressed his belief that censorship is counterproductive: "That which is denied becomes that which is most desired, and that which is hidden becomes that which is most interesting. Consequently, a great deal of time and energy is spent trying to get at what is being kept from you."

Dee Snider, frontman and lead singer of heavy metal band Twisted Sister, testified that he " not support <...> Mr. Gortikov's unnecessary and unfortunate decision to agree to a so-called generic label on some selected records".<2> Like John Denver, Snider felt that his music had been misinterpreted. He defended the Twisted Sister songs "Under the Blade", which had been interpreted as referring to sadomasochism, bondage, and rape, and "We're Not Gonna Take It", which had been accused of promoting violence. Snider said about "Under the Blade", a song Snider claimed was written about an impending surgery, that "the only sadomasochism, bondage, and rape in this song is in the mind of Ms. Gore." Snider concluded that "The full responsibility for defending children falls on the shoulders of my wife and I, because there is no one else capable of making these judgments for us."

- snip -

It is uncertain whether the Tipper sticker is effective in preventing children from being exposed to explicit content.<8> Some suggest that the sticker actually increases record sales. Philip Bailey stated that "For the most part might even sell more records in some areas - all you've got to do is tell somebody this is a no-no and then that's what they want to go see."<8> Ice-T's "Freedom of Speech" states that "Hey PMRC, you stupid fuckin' assholes/The sticker on the record is what makes 'em sell gold./Can't you see, you alcoholic idiots/The more you try to suppress us, the larger we get." And the Furnaceface song "We Love You, Tipper Gore", from 1991's album Just Buy It, suggests that the label "only whets my appetite ... only makes us want to hear it that much more".

27. I can't prove it,
but I believe that Lieberman was forced on Al Gore by the BIG MONEY Powerbrokers of the backroom Democratic Party to protect their Corporate/AIPAC interests.
Thats the only scenario that makes sense to me.

As for fighting for Election 2000, he DID go all the way to the Supreme Court. The only step beyond that is torches and pitchforks in the streets....which may have been a good idea.
If Al Gore, or John Kerry 2004, had called the faithful to the streets, and pledged to stand with us on the Capitol Steps (a la Ukraine) until the illegal elections were overthrown, I would have stood with either of them.

The MAIN reason I support Gore for 2008 is that he is from OUTSIDE the corrupt Democratic Party Machine. He doesn't "OWE" anybody anything, and I'm pretty sure he is NOT a favorite of BIG CORPO. Hillary/Obama has them sewed up.

For the first time in a long time, we have a REAL chance for a President of the People.

Gore picked Lieberman because he wanted a conservative running mate to counterbalance his liberalism. How can he be a president of the people if you think at the same time he's easily coerced by corporate/AIPAC interests?

43. No, it was because he was distancing himself from Clinton
He, or probably more accurately, his advisers, felt that Joe, being Clinton's most outspoken critic, would shield Gore from the Clinton scandals. The fact that he was a huge DLC backer probably factored in as well.

The only way to know is to ask Al Gore, and I will if I ever meet him.

You do realize that there is much more that goes on at the nominating convention than the floor vote?
There is coalition building. Promises are made in exchange for support. A free and clear choice of VP almost NEVER happens.

13. To me - he is my President already since 2001
Unless you believe that GWB was the rightful winner of the 2000 election.

As for the future, I think that Gore is keeping his options open.

If you ask me - I think GORE-OBAMA would be the strongest ticket in 2008.

The best thing we can do right now is sign the Live Earth pledge at www.liveearthpledge.org

Then convince your friends, neighbors, family and co-workers to sign it also!

By getting behind Al's current work, we can make it more likely that he might run.

And even if he doesn't run - we can help him shape the debate leading up to 2008.

Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore! :patriot:

Sign the Live Earth Pledge: www.liveearthpledge.org

Then ask all your friends and family to sign it too! :-)

Visit Al's site www.algore.com and read his blog http://blog.algore.com

Sign the petitions at www.algore.org and www.draftgore.com

16. Okay...so what's ADMIRABLE about Fred Thompson?
Thompson looks like my uncle on my mother's side...if you shaved all his hair off, fed him lard for six months, beat him with a two-by-four and rolled him down a hill in a sealed barrel full of nails. If Randi Rhodes thinks Thompson looks good, or has some admirable characteristics at all, she either needs new glasses or she's one of those mutant retard hillbilly characters from The Hills Have Eyes.

For God's sake, what does she think is GOOD about Thompson?

The right is going on and on about how Thompson is the Reagan Incarnate. There's a huge grass-roots groundswell of support for him, much like there is on the left for Al Gore. No one knows why he is so beloved... but he is. This cartoon pretty much sums it up:

31. If it were up to me....
I think Al should choose either Edwards or Richardson... and more and more I'm leaning toward Richardson because:

1) (like with Edwards) it won't take a current Senator out of the Senate, but will add another Dem vote as a tie breaker.

2) Richardson has done just about everything from Ambassador to Governor.

3) Latino votes by the truckload.

4) Swings New Mexico to the Democrats favor.

but that's just me... If he runs, he can choose who he wants.

25. How can he not run? My god, can he not see that even if Hill or Barrack win....
congress and the supremes are going to roll their asses six ways from September. A woman or a (young) black man? You think that bunch of troglodytes aren't going to try to bulldoze them?

Al Gore has a duty to step up. He's the only one that can handle all the terrible crises that are coming. We are not looking at business as usual during this next term.

26. Al is the man

I still am cool on Tipper for her PMRC shenanigans, but a Gore candidacy is exactly what I am waiting for.

33. Tipper was a feminist

She wouldn't even let her daughter Karenna watch Mighty Mouse because it always featured the guy mouse saving the girl mouse and not the other way around. I loved the music I listened to in the 80's as a kid and disliked Tipper at the time for her campaign to get music labeled. However, looking back at it now at the age of 31 I understand where she is coming from. I have two little girls now and a lot of that music I listened to degraded women. I didn't realize it as a 13 year old girl. I still like rock music and I'm not into censorship at all but that is not what she was trying to do. She just wanted parents to realize what they were letting their kids listen to. There are a lot of clueless parents out there. They let their kids listen and watch anything at really young ages. Its getting worse and worse and the kids are so young now and emulating all the wrong people (Britney, Paris, Lindsay). At least I was a teenager when I listened to that stuff! I worked with troubled kids at a group home 5 years ago and their parents let them listen to really bad hip hop stuff at 7 years old. There is something not right about kids that age singing "the thong song" if you know what I mean.

45. Thank you. Labelling is not censorship. A lot of former 13 years have never made the distinction. nt

49. Precisely. Thanks Jennicut - I believe that parents do need to listen to
more of what their kids are hearing, but parents are in battle with industries that spend billions to force themselves into kids' lives via TV and movies and peer pressure.

Parents need some help battling corporations - by reducing the amount of advertising their kids are exposed to, by demanding honesty in advertising, and in providing labeling for content of movies, TV, and music. No censorship - just reduce corporate power so parents can make good choices for their kids.

I don't understand why liberals don't see that this is a corporate power issue - not a free-speech issue.
