And One More Time, For Those Who Refuse To Learn From History !!!
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 11:22 PM by WillyT
One year after the publication of his book The Imperial Presidency, Arthur Schlesinger wrote the following for a column in Harpers:

We hear a great deal today about the presumably grim consequences of the impeachment of the President—an endless public trial, a people divided, a government paralyzed, a nation disgraced before the world. But suppose the House of Representatives should decide not to impeach Mr. Nixon. That would have its consequences, too—consequences that deserve at least as careful an examination.

For the refusal to impeach would be a decision as momentous as impeachment itself. It would and could be interpreted only as meaning that Congress does not think Mr. Nixon has done anything to warrant impeachment. It would alter the historic relationship of Presidential power to the constitutional system of accountability for the use of that power. The message our generation would send to posterity would be that Mr. Nixon, whatever his other disasters, had conceived and established a new conception of Presidential accountability, and that his successors, so long as they take care to avoid the crudities of a Watergate burglary, can expect to inherit Mr. Nixon’s conception of inherent Presidential authority and to wield the unshared power with which he will have endowed the Presidency. Failure to impeach would be a vindication of a revolutionary theory of Presidential accountability.

Please... tell me how ya refute THAT???

4. I agree, but look at the mess we have now
People like Cheney didn't learn the lesson. In fact one of his life's goals is to get back the power that Nixon lost--the imperial presidency that they thought was his right. I guess criminal minds don't learn lessons, whatever you do.

5. People Like Cheney Will NEVER Learn That Lesson...
And DO NOT CARE about the moral of that lesson.

Please... do NOT believe for a second that the last few years were about valid disagreements.

6. The only thing Republicans learned from Nixon was to hide their crimes better.

Impeachement won't purge or even slightly diminish the GOP traitors' power in our government or country. Impeachment won't give us health care, provide us with fairer courts. With impeachment, the corporate powers will still demand tort reform will bringing lawsuits against every citizen they can. Impeachment might make people think that America isn't a joke. Thank God Bush reminds us that it is.

7. Perhaps one of the most appalling things is how much you can swap Bush for Nixon and
Iraq for Vietnam in the writings and comments from the early 70s. Have we learned nothing at all?????!?!?!?!

10. How about a mass mailing of this clip to Congress (both parties)
and MSM? This kind of thing would give them the friggin soundbites they seem to need to relay any semblance of truth to the public.

Iran/Contra criminals by Bush Senior they would reform and come back and play nice?

Did anyone not see trouble on the horizon when Bush held his meeting with his "new" cabinent and staff (in December of 2000) and told all of us how he and his "new" administration were going to bring back "honor and integrity" to the White House? "NEW", Good God, Miss Molly! We were in for trouble, Dubya pulled everyone up out of the basement of Kennebunkport, dusted them off and "presto", his "new" cabinent, courtesy of "41". "They're back" was real, not a movie anymore, Poltergeist, the movie, had nothing on our "new" national nightmare.

We only have one choice dear citizens, stand up and run the Bush Family Evil Empire and all their cronies (going back 50 years and then some) out of DC and into prison for treason or shut up and be silenced, soon.

The country our founders envisioned is in peril. It has been for a very long time, but this time we are in now, it is the end game.

Just IMHO.
