LSU professor who blames Mr.Rogers for the nation's ills also dislikes people who oppose Wal-Mart
LSU business and finance professor Don Chance recently was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article as saying that the late Fred Rogers, in his role as TV's "Mister Rogers", was responsible for today's kids behaving like entitled brats: (as excerpted by the Pittsburgh Gazette)

"We can blame Mister Rogers ... he's representative of a culture of excessive doting."

http://www.wpxi.com/news/13635478/detail.html

After reading that, I checked out the good professor's faculty page at LSU. Dr.Chance includes a "Dislikes" page, where, I discovered, he dislikes people who advocate against Mall-Wart:

(he dislikes...) http://www.bus.lsu.edu/academics/finance/faculty/dchance/Personal/Dislikes.htm

"People who complain about Wal-Mart, especially those who try to prevent it from moving into their area. These people are typically those who don't need the jobs themselves and can afford to shop elsewhere. How dare them impose their notion of how things ought to be on those who need the jobs and the money they'd save shopping there. Frankly, my only complaint about Wal-Mart is that its success brings the curse that it's so crowded, I don't want to shop there. Like Yogi Berra allegedly said about a particular restaurant, "It's so crowded, nobody goes there."

If Professor Dipstick appreciates Wal-Mart so much, then why doesn't he just quit his faculty position and work at Wal-Mart full-time? He can then stick it to all those allegedly rich, well-off folk who are all opposed to Wal-Mart on the grounds they, uh, can "afford to shop elsewhere".

1. Let me guess: his funding comes from Walmart.
Where-all does his grant money come from? Hmmm.

2. Correct Dr. Chance, how dare people actually decide to preserve their local
businesses. And yes, opponents of sprawl mart don't need low wage, no health benefit jobs.

4. Big Business - the worst thing that's ever happened to America
Almost everywhere you go in America, it's the same - McDonalds, Walmart, Home Depot, Red Lobster, Blockbuster, etc. Giant corporations are absolutely ruining this country, driving small businesses into extinction. They hire workers for the lowest wages possible, while the corporate fatcats and shareholders reap the rewards. Health care, benefits - forget about it! Hell, they should just shut up and be glad they still have jobs. :sarcasm:

7. About Fred Rodgers;

As if MSM and a culture of "have it now" consumption haven't help shape the lives of our children. I love how these conservatives like to blame a boogie-man for each thing that is wrong in our society. I know of few people that Fred Rodgers hasn't touched their lives in a positive manner.

I suspect the bennies are better at the liberal cesspool known as LSU.

9. Hey, he's a Rocker...Here's his Guitar page
Edited on Fri Jul-06-07 08:41 PM by blitzen
I don't know the guy, although he is technically a "colleague" of mine since I work at the same institution. But perusing his webpages, I get the impression that he's a decent, although ideologically-challenged, kind of guy.

http://www.bus.lsu.edu/academics/finance/faculty/dchance/Personal/GuitarHomePage.htm

From his page--a call to boycott sheet music:

"I am using this forum to voice my objection and to encourage others to avoid buying sheet music wherever possible. I realize there may be some sheet music you have to buy. Just remember when you do, you are helping this industry stomp out freedom of expression on the part of the thousands of amateur guitarists out there. You are helping these 800-pound lawyers, I mean gorillas, to stop every teenager who identifies the first four notes of "Stairway to Heaven" and wants to share it with the rest the world, who already knows how to play the entire song. Just think of how many copies of StH sheet music isn't sold because that kid shared his interpretation. How many? None, zero, zilch, nada."

10. I thought Mr. Rogers taught kids to be kind and considerate of others
that's hardly the MO of entitled brats.

I think it's more likely that kids who were raised by Reagan loving wingnuts are the ones who are apt to be entitled brats.
