Don't miss Alexandra Pelosi's HBO special..."Friends of God"..Brilliant
I did not see anyone mention it yet. Oh, my goodness, what a film! She just lets them talk and talk, never interjects anything....and it starkly shows their real nature.

I always make clear I was raised Southern Baptist...but now I am out of there. It is different since it was hijacked, but a lot of the things send me back to my earlier years. Baptists for some reason have always thought they had a lock on Christianity.

This is an amazing film. You have to see the part where a preacher is teaching them that dinosaurs roamed the earth with men. They teach little children to sing songs about Behemoth from the bible being a dinosaur.

Pelosi asked one of the girls what she would say if Pelosi told her she did believe in evolution. The girl sort of stammered, but never even considered anyone else could be right. She said Pelosi got a bad education.

Of course the part with Ted Haggard is a classic...he talks about all the sex evangelicals have and how often and how their wives always have orgasms. And then where did you think all the babies came from? Touching in a way, since they have all shunned him since then.

Tom Shales wrote an interesting piece about it called Soldiers of the Cross.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/24/AR2007012402484.html

"Friends of God: A Road Trip With Alexandra Pelosi," a new HBO documentary about America's army of impassioned evangelicals, doesn't address the question "Why are we in Iraq?" -- but the film's parade of believers has a fervent certainty that echoes President Bush's unwavering belief in the war.

The ranks of the Bush administration include more born-again Christians "than any other administration" in American history, one of the evangelical leaders says, and Bush is heard enthusiastically addressing an antiabortion rally via telephone hookup.

Pelosi was out to define the movement through the words of the faithful -- words spoken from pulpits and blaring from billboards. But her film turned into another story more or less on its own. One of the many evangelicals Pelosi interviewed was the Rev. Ted Haggard, whose National Association of Evangelicals claims, or claimed, 30 million members. Haggard rails against gay marriage and, late in the hour, says that "if a pastor falls into corruption . . . it's heartbreaking."

Pelosi, daughter of Nancy Pelosi, the new speaker of the House, races from state to state, and much of what the evangelicals say has to do with loving thy neighbor and finding "eternal life." But there is also an unmistakable combative tone that grows more aggressive as Pelosi's travels continue.

And this paragraph is interesting.

At one point, a Christian rocker says that death is not to be feared, because "we've settled the issue of eternal life." But everywhere, beneath the widely smiling faces and facade of love in this film, there's a lurking hyper-nationalism that tries to link evangelicals with the U.S. flag and the Founding Fathers, and a seemingly paranoid hostility that maintains Christians are the most persecuted group in America.

It was disturbing to watch, though. My hubby was thinking that the power of these groups have been exaggerated. He was alarmed at the 35,000 a week-end who attend one of the megachurches, and so was I. It seemed like a complete social unit where they did not need the outside world.

1. Shales gets it...he says they just say they are right. God told them.
"Christians we see in this film are unyielding in the rightness of their ideas (i.e., evolution and abortion are wrong, "Jesus is the only way" and America is a Christian nation), and if someone challenges them, they simply say God has told them the truth."

They did it in the film over and over. I have a fear that these megachurch communities may be causing their outlook to be even more narrow. They have all kinds of services offered there, even more than a mega mall. They just consider themselves right and everyone else wrong....even the very little children.

Pelosi asked some very small children about evolution. They did not know what it was but they knew it was wrong.

2. Watched it a week or two ago...

... and the way Ms. Pelosi allows them an unfettered microphone proves that, "if you give them enough rope, they will hang themselves".

3. It's the first chance we've had to watch it.
Then I realized I had not seen anything mentioned. They just talk on and on...and they are so right about everything.

I remembered a girl who came into my 5th grade class after being totally home-schooled until then. She was sweet, but this movie reminded me of her. She antagonized everyone over everything. Being right and intolerant. One day she came back after school and asked me why no one liked her.

I told her it was not that they did not like her, but that she made them uncomfortable with telling them all what to believe. She said it was what she was asked to do by Jesus. I just left that alone.

5. Ah, indoctrination...

... one of my pet peeves! A great example of indoctrination can be seen in Human Nature <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0219822/> in the family supper table scene where the young boy is taught table manners. No wonder people "mature" into some type of psychosis.

6. She was an amazing girl. Very beautiful.
She used to come see me in later grades. I would see her with more friends, and she seemed happier. Her mother was one that other teachers would come back and talk to me....like ok, what's going on with that lady. Even when she was in middle school, I got a teacher coming to see me. Once they got the history they could deal with her better.

A very nice lady, but just had to be understood.

7. Ohhh, I missed it! Is it going to be on HBO again?
I have a bad habit of NOT checking to see what's on the movie channels unless someoneHEREon Du says something about it. I would guess, even if I had looked at the schedule, I wouldn't have recognized it as something I'd want to watch. Title sounds like a fundy movie.

12. I tend to agree. Picture of IgnIte t-shirts...What is Ignite?
The more militant parts of the movement....like the guys who were wearing black shirts saying Ignite. Ignite what?

The young people sounded warlike. And the jumping up and down is creepy. Church wasn't like that when I was growing up.

What was their group on My Space called? My Battle Plan, or something like that.

Here is the picture of the t-shirts with credit to the Washington Post.

The Battle Cry rally in San Francisco was one stop on documentary filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi's tour of evangelical America.

Even Rev. Al Mohler who grew up in a sensible Baptist household...good people..who is now head of the Southern Baptist Seminary says having sex without wanting children is insulting to God. He is also supporting the Quiverfull movement.

BattleCry 2007 Stadium Events

Join over 100,000 teens and adults who are gathering at these massive events to say enough is enough.

And here is The Crisis:

"A stealthy enemy has infiltrated our country and is preying upon the hearts and minds of 33 million American teens. Corporations, media conglomerates, and purveyors of popular culture have spent billions to seduce and enslave our youth. So far, the enemy is winning. But there is plenty we can do. We need to take action. We need to answer the Battle Cry."

17. MSNBC had an interview with Pelosi..
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16792629/site/newsweek/

This part caught my interest.

Q:Is it true that Falwell wasn’t aware who your mother was until after your interview with him?

A: That was great. I was sitting in his trailer, I had just done the whole interview with him, and when I turned the camera off, his son came up and told him. And he just said , “Your mother is very bright; she’s very smart, but very wrong.” And then I was kicked out of his trailer. That was actually the only time in a year and a half that my last name came into play.

19. Bill O'Really smears the film. Not surprising.
http://www.newshounds.us/2007/01/26/oreilly_attacks_alexandra_pelosi_documentary_friends_of_god.php

"Alexandra Pelosi's Documentary, Friends of God, premiered tonight on HBO and O'Reilly jumped at the opportunity to use the film to inflame his base with divisive rhetoric about Christian persecution and also smear Nancy Pelosi through her daughter. 1/25/07

O'Reilly was seething because Tom Shales and Alessandra Stanley wrote reviews of the film linking O'Reilly and Fox News to the Evangelical Christian movement, the subject of Pelosi's film.It seems Shales referred to BOR as " FOX's nut in residence". Bill reminded Shales, calling him " Tom Baby", that Cultural Warrior has been a best seller for 16 weeks adding with a quiet rage, " Read it, learn it, live it.!"

..."Missing the entire point of the film, which I saw tonight , O'Reilly claimed it was a battle between the "miltant left and militant christians". He erroneously stated that Pelosi followed people around for months and naturally found things that looked bad. " Anybody can do that. I can film S-Ps in an S&M bar. " He insisted that Pelosi only filmed people " on the fringe" Claiming he had nothing against Pelosi's film, he suggested that he didn't appreciate " militant christians" either.

....."Christine O'Donnell, didn't seem to know that Alexandra not Nancy had made the film. She immediately started attacking Nancy Pelosi for not following Christian principles. BOR jumped in to chastize her for " judging " Pelosi giving her a little lecture about how he doesn't do that on his show. It's doubtful that he didn't know what she had planned to say since the producers go over that thoroughly before the show. He had no trouble making the claim that the film was a "political ploy".

22. I just watched that last 20 minutes again when switching channels.
It was so intense. I watched that gay man, who was so nice and kind....just sit in their church and cry as Falwell stood in the pulpit preaching his hate. Pelosi asked him why he attended, he said it was so sad to see them think they were so very right and be so very wrong.

I missed those tears first time around.

They are a hate-filled bunch of so-called Christians. I will never go back into a church again...never.

25. The guy doing the "teaching" is Ken Ham...from Australia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Ham

"Ham was born in Queensland, Australia but moved to the United States of America in 1987. He has a bachelor's degree in applied science (with an emphasis on environmental biology) from the Queensland Institute of Technology and also holds a Diploma of Education from the University of Queensland. Jerry Falwell, a Baptist preacher and chancellor of the Baptist Liberty University, granted Ham an honorary doctorate of literature in 1993.

He is married to Marilyn ("Mally") whom he describes as a "very, very submissive, supportive wife" who has "always supported me five million percent." The couple have five children.<1> Two are married, and two live with them in Cincinnati. Ham has four grandchildren.

Between 1987 and 1993, Ham worked for the Institute for Creation Research (ICR), one of the oldest and most prominent American Creationist organizations. In 1994, he set up Answers in Genesis, a Christian ministry devoted to convincing people that Genesis, and the rest of the bible, should be taken as literally true, historically correct and scientifically accurate in every detail."

He even got coverage on PBS. Take a close look at his picture there. The way the beard looks and compare the pics in the video...ok, just kidding.
