ABC News: Did Romney's dog suffer on the car roof?
http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/Politics/Story?id=3329017&page=2

Dr. Russell Cumming, a professor of aerospace engineering at California Polytechnic State University:

"At that speed, assuming sea level conditions, the poor little dog would have about 10 pounds per square foot pressing against his head," said Cumming.

And in layman's terms?

"He would constantly feel a little less than 3 pounds pressing on his head for the entire trip," he added. "The windshield would help, but boy that would get tired."

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Douglas Osheroff of physics at Stanford University said the dog crate on top of the car would change the air flow around the vehicle.

"Beyond a certain velocity, the air flow becomes turbulent," said Osheroff. "The airflow isn't going to be laminar," which means it won't have a uniform distribution.

Cumming said that's bad news for Seamus.

"Chances are the windshield would only protect the front of the dog, but the air flowing around the windshield would buffet the side of the dog -- that would be tiring," said Cummings. "My wife's a vet, and she would be more worried by the dehydration of the dog's eyes under those conditions."

Has anybody figured out that he was probably SMUGGLING this dog into Canada?

Every international crossing i have seen has limits on the animals that can go back and forth. The Niagra crossing to Canada is no different.

Unless Romney had some pretty involved paperwork, (or he bribed a guard) the dog would have had to stay in 30 days of quarantine.

And even if he had the paperwork I find it HIGHLY unlikely that any border guard would have let them into Canada if the guard had seen how the dog was secured to the roof.

Once you add this up, (and there are records for these border crossings that go back a long way) the story sounds almost made up.

Either that or the Romney kid just outed his dad as a Smuggler. As i recall unauthorized animals is a felony in the US and Canada.

If that is so, then there will be a record of it at the Niagra border.
and there will be the signature of a guard who saw the dog strapped to the roof.

42. First, it depends on the age & training of the dog.
Believe it or not, my dog has made it from 7 o'clock at night to 12:00 the next afternoon, regularly. She's a great dog.

Second, she can last that long because she's relaxed and at home with the rest of us here. She knows when it gets urgent, a nudge and a reminder is all it takes to get her out in time, so she's calm. In other words, to put a dog through a strange environment, like riding on a car roof for 12 hours is incredible. When we drive down to Miami, 4 or 5 hours, we stop to give the dog a drink because she's usually stressed out a bit. We give her her own space on her bed.

Why didn't his wife drive the mutt down in a separate car?

On edit - I know Mrs. Romney has some sort of neuromuscular disease; may be she couldn't drive back then. On the other hand, I can't imagine her tolerating a 12 hour non-stop trip very well.

49. Usually that kind of incontinence indicates FEAR...
...keep in mind that the dog was NOT a human.
He was NOT thinking, "Oh, goody! Here I am, riding on the roof, going on vacation and enjoying the fresh air. YAAAY!"
The air pressure, the speed, the movement of the car, even with the windshield put the poor dog into a situation he could not make sense of and he was terrified.
Sooo...his bowels cut loose...and not just the usual doggie dump, but explosive diarrhea. Keep in mind also that MOST dogs, in a normal situation, don't simultaneously void their bladder and bowel; it's a two-step process. For them both to go at the same time and in such a manner indicates a seriously frightened animal.

The dog was NOT 'enjoying the fresh air'. He was fucking TERRIFIED.
And then he gets hosed off, and back on the road, traveling wet (can you say 'evaporative cooling'?), so now he's not only terrified, but he's getting chilled.
I wonder if the dog came down sick with something during or after the vacation.
Nah...fresh air is so good for you...:sarcasm:
