John Edwards Spends a Long Hot Day In Houston
posted by Hal at 10:25 PM

~ excerpt ~

Edwards came in, dressed in slacks and a blue long sleeved shirt with the cuffs rolled up. Now I’ve seen Barack Obama speak, and he speaks with authority. John Edwards speaks with feeling and animation. He truly is the people’s candidate. He is like us.

He began right off with remarks on the hate-filled personal attacks of Ann Coulter, and Elizabeth’s blindsiding her on Hardball. Simply stated, these attacks have got to stop if we are to engage in dialogue at a time that we specifically need to have it.

On issues Edwards was all over the map. Universal Health Care, Stopping the war in Iraq, Torturing prisoners, Guantanamo, having a Supreme Court whose justices reflect the values of a majority of Americans. Dick Cheney and the secretive imperial Vice Presidency. To all of that, John Edwards just had three words: Constitution, Article Two. Yep it’s all there for Cheney to read.

37 million Americans living in poverty. Having to choose between paying the heating bill and feeding your family. John Edwards spoke of his 2004 “Two Americas” theme. It’s still there and the split is getting wider. He spoke of his “One America” Plan unveiled just last week. His plan to reduce rising debt among the poor and middle class.

Guess what he left out? Fear mongering. Any given Republican candidate will talk about how afraid we need to be and how the only party that can protect us is the self-same party that got us into this horrible bloody mess.

What else? Immigration. That red herring that is on the breakfast, lunch and dinner menu of every Republican in and out of office. Illegal immigrants didn’t run jets into the twin towers, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania. All those guys had visas.

Really, if it weren’t for fear mongering and illegal immigrants, Republicans would have nothing to talk about, nothing to say but “Oops . . . sorry.”

It was over too soon but he had lots of signing to do. Don got Edwards to sign a campaign sign that some lucky devil will get to bid for at the next Fort Bend Democrats fundraiser, I am sure.

Then we all went across the street and ate some barbecue.

And all is well in the world.

John Edwards AND barbecue.

15. That or Gore/Feingold (which is my image of executive perfection)
Though getting Edwards back into political office (which is sorely needed) and keeping Feingold as a valuable force in the Senate in some ways makes Gore/Edwards practically sound a lot better.

5. I think that Edwards is the candidate who will rise to the top, if
Senator Clinton's campaign falters. I wonder about her staying power at this point. She seems unstoppable, but if she should go down, I think that Edwards is the one who will come out on top...

The more people see that Edwards is the candidate for everyone, and how he wants to give the Power back to the People, the stronger his campaign will become.

I keep checking the schedule - I will be there at the next North Carolina event!

40. I read DU in '03-'04 and IIRC, disability issues was your problem with JRE 95% of the time
Edited on Sat Jun-30-07 09:41 AM by 1932
which I thought odd because no other candidate had a record of recovering MILLIONS of dollars for disabled people, and preventing disabilities (like the little girl who had her insides sucked out of her thanks to a defective pool filter valve that had killed or maimed lots of other kids before her, and stopped killing and maiming kids after Edwards's case, or all the kids who suffered brain damage because nurses were too afraid to counter doctor's actions before Edwards's cases, but could after the cases because the state had to pass a law protecting them from being fired if they told doctors they made a mistake).

And I think it's odd that you now don't like him because of this issue because, more than any other candidate, regardless of how he voted on the IWR, if he's elected, it looks like we're out of Iraq (do you have that confidence if anyone else besides Kucinish is elected)?

21. They are very good posts, and non-fiction, as well.
The first thread started w/Dr. King's 'Beyond Vietnam' speech, wherein he spoke about "a true revolution of values". It went on to cover John Edward's "realizing the dream" and his "true revolution of values".

The second thread was an excerpt from Hardball; John Edwards, the true gentleman that he is, defended Senators Clinton & Obama against Coulter's vile attacks.

If you read these threads (& also the links below), you might appreciate why I so strongly support John Edwards for president... and you might understand that the only thing that would prevent me from voting for him is my death.

26. The "warmonger", aka the decider, aka the commander guy, is not up for re-election.
Remember him? The one who pulled out the inspectors? The one who ordered the invasion of Iraq based on lies? The one who is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors? The one who should be impeached & put on trial for war crimes? No, I wouldn't vote for the warmonger if he were eligible to run again. Not for president, not for dogcatcher, not for a MLB team's waterboy.

I will, however, vote for John Edwards, who will provide this country with Moral Leadership as president... a president who will bring forth Transformational Change For America And The World.

27. I believe it's called being in denial
when you can't accept the FACT that johnnyboy co-sponored and voted for the bill that led this country into the genocide of the Iraqi people.

Then only "changed his mind" when the POLLS showed that most Americans were against the war AND because he decided to try for another run for the presidency.

Please tell me exactly what the center he opened (after he decide to run again) has done for poverty. Oh and how does working for a hedge firm teach someone about being poor?

He had plenty of time to do something in that areana when he was the senator for the state I lived in. But he did NOTHING.

Oops. He did do something:

The field of credible Democrats running for President was significantly narrowed today when two rumored candidates insulted every employed woman, every woman in business, and every woman who has been a victim of violence in this country. In casting their votes to promote Judge D. Brooks Smith to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, only one step below the Supreme Court, rumored candidates Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., and Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., disregarded the extensive evidence of unethical behavior and discriminatory conduct that caused the Washington Post, New York Times and Los Angeles Times to oppose Smith's confirmation.

- snip -

Another Presidential wanna-be, Sen. Edwards, hid out in his office across the hall from the hearing, and didn't even have the courage to cast his "Yes" vote in public.

http://www.now.org/press/05-02/05-23.html

Now, how's that for being moral?

No, Pastiche, I am not in denial; John Edwards is not a perfect human being, and I don't agree w/every word he has ever uttered. I do not "adore" him; you must have me confused w/someone else. I support him and intend to vote for him because he best represents what is important to me, especially in regard to poverty. UPDATE: Fragile X, Edwards, and Special Interests
by chuckles1
Mon Mar 26, 2007 at 06:28:39 AM PDT

Greetings friends.
Some time ago, I went searching for the early Senate record of John Edwards. My reason was simple, I wanted to find out what this man, who was elected to the Senate in 1998, stood for. Here in North Carolina, we have recently been treated to Senators that, when elected, fail to do the people's work because they know they have 6 years to make up for screwing the good folks of North Carolina. Even among Democrats, often the first couple years are spent making up favors to special interests. Don't believe me? Go check out the bills SPONSORED by your local Senators in their first couple years.

So, I did that. I wanted to see, who was it that John Edwards considered his "special interest". I'll admit that I, in particular, was shocked by what I found.

(snip)

    S.1131
Title: A bill to promote research into, and the development of an ultimate cure for, the disease known as Fragile X.
Sponsor: Sen Edwards, John (introduced 5/26/1999)

    (snip)

S.975 : A bill to amend chapter 30 of title 39, United States Code, to provide for a uniform notification system under which individuals may elect not to receive mailings relating to skill contests or sweepstakes, and for other purposes.

S.1018 : A bill to provide for the appointment of additional Federal district judges in the State of North Carolina, and for other purposes.

S.1131 : A bill to promote research into, and the development of an ultimate cure for, the disease known as Fragile X.

S.1424 : A bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide the same tax treatment for special pay as for combat pay.

S.1610 : A bill to authorize additional emergency disaster relief for victims of Hurricane Dennis and Hurricane Floyd.

S.1850 : A bill to amend section 222 of the Communications Act of 1934 to modify the requirements relating to the use and disclosure of customer proprietary network information, and for other purposes.

S.2064 : A bill to amend the Missing Children's Assistance Act, to expand the purpose of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to cover individuals who are at least 18 but have not yet attained the age of 22.

S.2065 : A bill to authorize the Attorney General to provide grants for organizations to find missing adults.

S.2100 : A bill to provide for fire sprinkler systems in public and private college and university housing and dormitories, including fraternity and sorority housing and dormitories.

S.3180 : A bill to provide for the disclosure of the collection of information through computer software, and for other purposes.

S.3221 : A bill to provide grants to law enforcement agencies that ensure that law enforcement officers employed by such agencies are afforded due process when involved in a case that may lead to dismissal, demotion, suspension, or tranfer.

S.3228 : A bill to promote the development of affordable, quality rental housing in rural areas for low-income households.

Take a look at those bills. Affordable housing, hurricane relief, Fragile X, "special pay" tax relief for soldiers, heck even junk mail protection, and spyware protection. All of them are aimed at helping people. There are other bills he Sponsored, you can go see them, most are import tariff exemptions for our FORMER textile mills, the ones that are now gone to foreign countries. Again, all his bills are aimed at helping people like us, workers, citizens, voters. They aren't aimed ONLY at the business community, they ARE handouts to his special interest group - people.

Caring about people. It isn't new, it isn't something he is doing for his Presidential race, it is something he has always done, even when the heat WASN'T on him. I like that.

UNC-Chapel Hill creates Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity;
names former Sen. John Edwards as director

CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is launching a Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity that will be led by former U.S. Senator and vice presidential candidate John Edwards.

The Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity will be a nonpartisan initiative, bringing together UNC-Chapel Hill faculty and other national public policy experts to examine innovative and practical ideas for moving more Americans out of poverty and into the middle class. The center will have an advisory committee of senior faculty representing multiple disciplines across campus. In addition to leading the center, Edwards also will serve as a guest lecturer on campus.

"John Edwards is a distinguished Carolina alumnus, and we are delighted that he will return to campus to bring together today’s best minds to focus on issues that affect us all," Chancellor James Moeser said.

Edwards spent six years in the U.S. Senate. In that time, he championed policy initiatives such as raising the minimum wage, expanding the earned income tax credit, creating matching savings accounts for low-income families, and providing incentives for teachers to teach in low-income schools. Edwards also focused on poverty during last year’s presidential campaign.

"The time I spent at Chapel Hill gave me many of the tools I have used all my life to help those who are struggling, and I am so proud that I will be able to continue this work and also give something back to UNC-Chapel Hill," Edwards said. "As director of the center, I will work to explore creative approaches to the difficulties that families in poverty face every day."

37. Did I miss it?
What has he done for the poor?

As the late, great Molly Ivins often said, Watch What They Do, Not What They Say.

P.S. I presented facts:

1) He co-sponsored the IWR

2) He voted for the IWR

3) He wasn't against the war until the polls said he should be

4) He was a coward regarding his vote for the anti-disabled, misogynic judge

There is much more, but that is all I've stated on this thread.

38. Pastiche, don't you ever get tired of your repetitive bashing of Edwards on thread after thread?
We've heard it all before, and, frankly, it's boring.

If you're not tired of bashing Edwards, you really should do it on the 'other' site; I'm sure that they would appreciate it much more 'over there'. You might also consider contacting Coulter; she'd love to hear from you.

39. Stating facts does not equal bashing
Because of his past actions, I do not trust him.

Lookit, if he had actually done something positive for the poor while he was in the senate, that would be one thing. But he did not.

Btw, what's up w/you and coulter?

42. Edwards will be the elected candidate
I'm black and living in this country, the way some people feel about the female gender and race, I don't think this country is ready to except either. Remember Geraldine Farror(excuse my spelling) and the way they treated her? Don't get me wrong, I like Hillary and Obamma but my pick would be Edwards because he would be the most likely candidate to shut down the rethugs and any of their running candidates.

44. Sapphire, next positive Edwards OP let's have a pool how long before certain bashers show up...
You can set your watch by their appearances, and in so many cases you can predict the exact same language they will repeat to anyone who will read them --no matter what the subject your post on Edwards might address.

I want in early on your next Edwards post --I predict either one of them will show up by the 10th post.

Keep up the good work Sapphire --Edwards really is the candidate most likely to do the most for the people if elected President.

46. Regarding that certain group, they missed a few of my threads.
I invited at least one of them to look here to find them, but that particular poster didn't want to.

Yes, they keep posting the same thing... over and over and over... ad infinitum. One of them, at least has a sense of humor. The rest are just boring. Interesting how they typically comment that 'stating the facts is not bashing', but they are very careful about the 'facts' that they provide... and can't seem to accept other positive facts that don't quite fit in their pit bullish realm of thought. One might wonder about their cherry-picking of facts, and also their inability to live in the present, as well as look to a better future for our country and our world... a future that will be better for 'the least of these my brethren'... those who need us so desperately.

Have you read this outstanding response in another thread?

It really should be an OP, don't you think?

45. Thanks, Sapphire. The only thing I disagree with...
Elizabeth "blindsided" AC? That word has connotations of unfairness. Nothing EE did was unfair.

With politeness, earnestness, and finesse, she did give Ann an opportunity to pledge to behave better, but instead Ann took enough rope to hang herself with.
