5. Neither can I
and its painfully obvious that the Senators have been bought and paid for pushing this crap on an electorate that can see how damaging this will be to just about everyone but the cheep labor lobby. Disgusting!!!

4. Bad for the country and 'good' for corporate america.
We are in the closing days of what was formerly known as the US of A.

7. Hey, look at the details. This means the Dems won the fight. There will be
a limited number of amendmants offered by each side. They ended the "endless amendment filibuster" and now can offer and vote on amendments.

It remains to be seen what the legislation will be, after amendments.

3. Interesting...
Interesting how such a significant issue seems to be attracting little attention on DU right now.

With all the past amendments and the additional amendments they will now debate, I wonder how much support the final version of this Senate bill will have.

We definitely need comprehensive immigration reform, for the good of well-intentioned immigrants and American society though I worry that this version, even if it passes, won't be what we need.

6. They just showed Bush's statement. Watch for replays on C-SPAN.
I did not catch it all, but he made a huge mistake in logic, stating we need a temporary worker program to stop illegal border crossings. Stopping illegal hiring is what can stop illegal border crossing. A temporary worker program may well add millions of additional illegal immigrants who do not leave, by giving them a free pass across the border. Also, will temporary workers pushing down wages create higher demand for illegal workers who work for far less?

Did Bush discuss labor law enforcement in the least?

11. Your right!
"A temporary worker program may well add millions of additional illegal immigrants who do not leave, by giving them a free pass across the border." The worst of that program is that those who don't want to pursue citizenship get the visa without ANY of the penalties and fines being used to claim this is not an amnesty. What immigrant illegal or otherwise in their right mind wouldn't opt out of the citizenship provisions so as NOT to have to jump through ANY of the hoops and yet remain here working? The whole thing is a sham, Bu$h knows it and that smirk he had on his face while doing his presser after the vote pretty well say's it all.

8. If bush and dick are pushing this piece of crap legislation, you can bet
it is going to severely hurt the American middle class and help the "haves and have mores". What is the use of passing more convoluted legislation on immigration when we don't even enforce the current laws on the books?

What a total waste of time. It will be business as usual after this passes. Thank god, we have the democratic party to put the interest of the American middle class ahead of immigrants and corporations...Oh wait....

15. There is a need for more debate outside the Senate. This is good to see.
Even if some of what he says is patently wrong.

Border security is a myth. Illegal employers is the reality.

17. Unfortunately, it's probably the best we can hope for.
I see the bill as far too punitive to the immigrants, and far too generous to the corporations. But, given the xenophobia and racism exhibited and promoted against them, at least it gives them a way to stay here if they choose to, without having to live in fear of "La Migra".
