The I Word in the Boston Globe
Submitted by davidswanson on Sun, 2007-06-24 02:10. Impeachment

Here's an article in Sunday's Boston Globe about impeachment, followed by a letter submitted to the Globe's editor.

The 'I' word
Why a growing grassroots movement on the left wants to impeach the president -- and why Democrats in Washington don't even want to talk about it.
By Drake Bennett | June 24, 2007

FOR ELIZABETH HOLTZMAN it was the discovery, in late 2005, that the Bush administration had been monitoring Americans' phone and email conversations without warrants that convinced her that the President shouldn't be allowed to serve out the remainder of his term.

As a young congresswoman from New York, Holtzman, who now practices law in New York City, had served on the House Judiciary Committee that in 1974 adopted articles of impeachment against President Nixon. Among the charges, she points out, was that Nixon had overseen an illegal electronic surveillance program.

"Having participated in that," she says, "you don't forget it."

Today Holtzman is one of the leading voices in a small but energetic movement seeking to impeach not only President Bush but his vice president, Dick Cheney. In March, the Massachusetts Democratic Party joined 13 others, in states like California, Nevada, and New Hampshire, in passing a resolution in support of impeachment. The legislatures of nearly 80 towns and cities (most in Massachusetts, Vermont, and California) have passed similar resolutions, and state legislators in 11 states have introduced impeachment bills.

1. If there is evidence that they broke the law, and even a C average....
first year law student could probably find at least three instances, then make the repugs publicly defend the criminals. I for one would like to see them being forced to publicly defend the administration. I say call their bluff.
This is about the constitution, what we as a people are all about, and who controls this nation. No small matter.
Frankly I am not optimistic. After watching Sicko I am convinced that this nation suffers from some deep undiagnosed psychosis.

2. So, they are afraid that holding this admistration to the rule of law would,...
,...make it a political martyr? IOW, it's all about political fear?

Have these Democrats considered the consequences of FAILING to hold this administration to the rule of law? Aren't those consequences far more serious both in the long and short term?

I just get disgusted when I read crap like that.

3. So don't impeach but also don't expect me to cheer
Edited on Sun Jun-24-07 09:30 AM by Solly Mack
while people make speeches denouncing the criminality of Bush and Cheney.

Pointing to Bush and Cheney, talking about how criminal and corrupt they are, how they have harmed America...expecting me to cheer you and embrace you...to vote for you because you make speeches against Bush and Cheney. Expecting me to believe you're for better government. For transparent government. For getting rid of corruption in government.

I'll not be manipulated, thank you very much.

I'll not be worked into a 2 minute frenzy by some politician hoping to gain my vote by listing the crimes of Bush and Cheney...crimes they are getting away with even as the speeches are made.

If you're going to jockey for my vote by telling me how harmful Bush and Cheney have been for the country... how criminal their actions have been - then you better come armed with more than just words.
