Isn't it literally too late? They only have 18 months left to destroy the world, what possible good is impeachment at this point? Here they are about to plunge the world into utter chaos, unabated, unstoppable, out of their fucking minds, do you honestly think impeaching them will have any effect at all?

I think we should be thinking along other lines, impeachment is too much like obeying the law, bush and cheney DON'T OBEY THE LAW, why should we?

I say impeachment at this time, now that it's way too late, is a red herring. I know it's in the constitution, but what is that to bush and cheney? Nothing.

IMPEACHMENT'S TOO GOOD FOR EM'.

2. Honestly they could do it this afternoon
Bring it up and vote on it. They aren't going to convict in the Senate but Bush would forever officially be an impeached President.

Do it on a Friday afternoon. It would show that history will be recorded correctly and that the Dems can run a quick efficient ship.

6. Actually, it's not that simple.
First it has to go through the Judiciary committee, which may or may not refer it to the floor, or even take action on it. More to the point, even assuming it made it to the floor, if there are only 8 Dems who didn't feel it was appropriate, we'd lose the vote. And realistically, I think a lot more than that would object to summary impeachment without creating a public sentiment for it.

10. Imho, you're discounting the Republics who want distance from Junior
As for public sentiment, Junior is likely in the 20s right now.

17. But there aren't 17 Republicans willing to impeach.
They want to distance themselves, but they're still Republicans, which means they're basically the same as him. And the public may detest junior, but it would still take time to bring up the idea of impeachment and get people comfortable with it.

3. I agree impeachment's too good for them
And I'm against impeaching Bush when it clearly won't get him out of office.

I'm beginning to think it would be worthwhile to impeach Cheney, though. Most of the investigations don't involve him. Impeachment would shine a light on what he's been doing.

4. Unless we wanted to be accused of rushing to judgment, or pulling it for 'political' reasons, like
they did, you'd need to investigate, indict, then impeach...so, year and a half, anyway, if they worked hard at it and the GOP didn't throw up too many roadblocks.

I think they should continue to aggressively INVESTIGATE. Get all this nefarious shit on the record. For starters, anyway....then see where it goes.

All an impeachment would give us at this stage of the game is "Wraaah wraaaah wraah not executive branch wraaaah wraaah wraaah" Cheney in the driver's seat...and he'd probably pick Darth Vader as HIS VP....would we be better off in that instance?

5. If impeached, I want them to be convicted, but ...
if there's not enough time (as the Dems claim), then so be it. At least the trial will take place and the facts will be known. America - and the world - deserves that much.

7. No.
A vote on articles of impeachment doesn't take two years. One day.

14. Get the impeachment process started any way.
Do investigations, due diligence, etc.

Then expose all the dirty, stinkin' things they've done. Just in time for the 2008 elections.

How many Republicans do you suppose will be re-elected, much less voted in for the first time? People will be FED UP with the GOP at this point. Make ALL OF THEM pay for what they've done. Remember, our last Congress allowed a lot of sh!t to slip through when they shouldn't have. Let ALL OF THEM PAY FOR THEIR ACTIONS.

So what if there isn't enough time, the legal process can certainly extend past the term in office if the crimes are serious enough.

And does anyone really believe this bunch hasn't committed serious crimes?

18. Anybody who cares about the law, the truth, the Constitution, the future,
the moral high ground, some idea called - um - what is that? I think it was called - um - America? Not much, really. :sarcasm:

It just has to be done. DONE ANYWAY. If not, then we will all have signaled clearly to future generations and future power-abusers that all this shit the bushies pulled is okay and not that big a deal, really. And I could NOT disagree more. It IS a big deal.

"It'll take too long" has been a standard excuse here on DU, too, and has nearly run out the clock.
