I'm sure glad these veterans are respectful of freedom of speech. What gentlemen! What heroes!

Patriotism quickly turns belligerent

I participated on Saturday in a march for peace in Casper. I did this because I am concerned about the increasing trend of violence that has invaded our country since the beginning of the war in Iraq. I have lived in the times of several wars -- World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and now the war in Iraq.
I lived through rationing, blackouts and the loss of friends and family in these wars. I understand the need, as a last resort, for war. I do not believe we, the United States of America, considered all of our options to prevent war before we invaded Iraq. I hope for peace, both for the United States and the peoples throughout the rest of the world.
The violence and anger targeted at me on Saturday were alarming.
Being spit at by angry, volatile men is not something I seek. I believe these veterans think they are showing respect for the troops who are currently serving our country. The image they presented to me, a fellow citizen, makes me wonder at their ability to respect anyone who does not share their view. They claim to be standing up for the "rights of Americans" by shouting, bullying and threatening other Americans who are expressing those same rights.
