Chief suspends two KC officers

The action comes after national publicity about the incident fuels an angry public response.
By CHRISTINE VENDEL
The Kansas City Star

Kansas City Police Chief Jim Corwin on Thursday suspended two officers who ignored a pregnant and bleeding woman’s pleas for medical help during an arrest last year.

He called the officers’ behavior “inconsistent with the values and policies of this department and inconsistent with the training they received in the police academy.”

The Feb. 5, 2006, traffic stop became national news this week after The Kansas City Star obtained and released Tuesday a patrol-car video of the event.

Sofia Salva, who was nearly four months pregnant, spent 10 hours in police custody after the traffic stop. After her release, she delivered a premature baby at a hospital.

1. Suspended does not mean fired.
Are they going to be fired? Or is this just a temporary slap on the wrist?

2. I would think they have due process
My SIL works for the KCPD. She said there was a national uproar over this. But the chief has been out of town and just got back yesterday. He immediately suspended these two cops.

Let's see what happens. This dept has been known to fire cops before.

4. I believe that is fairly routine in cases like this
I am at least glad they are not on the streets.

5. well...
I'm not cheering his action. This happened almost a year ago and he only suspended the officers after the woman filed a lawsuit and local media filed to get the video. Who knows how many other citizens these two vile cops have victimized in a year? Why wasn't there an internal affairs investigation of this months and months ago?

6. Excellent point
and a question I hope someone in the national media (that I hope will still be following the case to conclusion) asks him just that.
