Rep. Jerrold Nadler: Bush's Warrantless Wiretapping "Worse Than Watergate"
Submitted by JonathanSchwarz on Thu, 2007-06-07 15:55. Congress

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, Chairmen of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, is holding a series of hearings, starting today, on the Bush administration's NSA wiretapping program, habeas corpus, renditions, etc. He said a lot of encouraging things in a new interview with Josh Marshall—for instance, that the warrentless wiretapping is a "criminal conspiracy" that is "worse than Watergate."

MARSHALL: Is there one issue that really hasn't gotten a lot of press attention that should, that you're going to be looking at?

NADLER: I think the one issue that hasn't gotten enough attention is the overwhelming obviousness of the fact that this entire warrantless wiretapping is illegal and the President and Attorney General are engaged in a criminal conspiracy. I mean, to me this is worse than Watergate. I don't understand why -- yes, it got in the press a little...yes, this is illegal, no it's not, because we have this power. Well, the Supreme Court says you don't have that power. There is no shadow of a claim at this point. And it's incredible.

MARSHALL: And this is even separate from, I mean James Comey, comes in and says, you've got to bring it back, you're saying even at that level it's still illegal, even what he approved?

NADLER: Yes, that's right. Clearly.

MARSHALL: Thank you very much for your time.

2. Can I ask a question about these hearings?
Why don't I see staff (lawyers) asking any questions, as with Iran-Contra and Whitewater?

Did they change the rules? Am I missing it?

20. Partly it's ego. Take Spike Lee for example. Great director, so-so actor.
So why does a brilliant director like Spike Lee keep casting a mediocre actor like Spike Lee in pivotal roles in all his movies? Certainly he could find someone more talented to play the parts. Ah, but, it helps in ID-branding his work product. Just like calling his films "a Spike Lee joint" instead of "a Spike Lee movie," it's a smart marketing move--it draws attention and therefor raises consumer awareness of the product.

A congressperson is not just a public servant. He's also a product who has to be resold to the public every two years (or six). If you're out busting a corrupt administration and protecting the Constitution from Big Government abuse--and you've got some cool sound bites from C-SPAN showing you nailing the bad guys (Pat Leahy and Bobby Scott are great examples of how to do this)--well, then partly you're representing the people's interest and partly you're moving product off the shelves in time for next November.

I say, without a trace of irony in my voice, this is part of what makes America great.

Seems to me if the Prez and AG have broken the LAW, it's the DUTY of Congress to IMPEACH. Just a thought.

18. Nor is Nadler a signatory to Kucinich's articles to impeach Cheney...
and he has yet to come up with articles of his own against Bushie and Gonzales.

Talk's cheap, Jerry. How about using your pen once in a while?

22. The cops know who robbed that store last week. Why bother with all that DA & grand jury nonsense?
It's a process. When it comes to the law, you have to follow the process. Remember how bad the Republicans looked in their rush to impeach and try against Clinton? And they had a whole year's worth of calendar more than the Democrats (plus a hell of a lot less respect for the rule of law).

19. The way to save the DOJ at this point is for the USA's to rat out Cheney, gonzo and *.
Its time. Subpoena's are good. But if the DOJ is to be saved they have to start rating them out big time.

28. It's Better For America Not To Unveil the Criminality of the Bush Administration
So sayeth the Bush Administration.

So sayeth our duly elected representatives in Congress.

So sayeth the not-so-liberal media.

Piss on them all. Representative democracy and freedom of the press have been mocked and castrated. Our voices have been muted.

USA...RIP.
