Coeur d'Alene parents look to restrict access to certain books

Annie Bishop

COEUR D'ALENE -- Checking out a copy of "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou may require more than a library card in the Coeur d'Alene School District if some parents have their way.

Some parents say the book, along with five others, should require parental permission for students to read them. On Monday night the school board is taking a closer look at the books in question and its policies in checking out certain books.

It's policy for the school board to take a closer look at books parents have serious complaints against.

The books in question include "Fallen Angels", "The Chocolate War", "Snow Falling on Cedars", "Beloved", "Dancing at the Rascal Fair" and "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

1. Why because:
Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 09:48 PM by Vincardog

One of the books, "Dancing at the Rascal Fair" came under fire a year ago after one student and several parents said sexual descriptions in the book were not appropriate.

One parent also wants the district to require classroom guests and speakers to submit audio and video recordings of their presentations before they arrive.

They can't have their larvae exposed to unapproved ideas can they?

4. OK, a handful of Talibangelists v. The ALA. Wonder who always wins?
These poor Talibangelists have no idea of the wrath that will befall them by we librarians. We shall descend, armed with our 17 rescue cats each, all trained to attack upon command. We shall be wearing our special combat Birkenstocks and bulletproof sweaters.

It will be a vicious fight, once the 2nd Tennessee Greater Nashville Academic Brigade gets north and west, linking up with the Queens County Public Batallion. I understand they are coming with knitting needles.

When we take prisoners, we force them to learn to use the OCLC World Cat and then process Interlibrary Loan. And if they make a mistake and send out one to a library not in the consortium, then their stay gets extended and they are forced to read War and Peace over and over and over. And if they are still intransient, its time for the hardcore special interrogation techniques: Marcel Proust in French.

5. Maya Angelou is probably a subversive element in their minds

We had a heck of a time getting a MLK holiday here. The Mormons in the legislature said the Mormon pioneers should have a legal day to honor them before MLK got honored.

It's tough being a democrat in Idaho.

12. Yeah, real subversive.
Being black and all.

There is a small number of real nutcases in that area of ID and they make life miserable for the good folks up there.

6. Wow, I do not live in the same world as these people

....I had my kids read "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" during one of their summer breaks. I bought it for them to read on vacation.

These types of parents scare me, are they afraid their kid might learn something?

8. Just one reason why I'm against Mitt Romney
They believe in total thought control of a child. Throw in the north Idaho rednecks and you get Idaho.
