Kookie ROBERTS and Sam DONALDSON were out-drooling each other to welcome the coming of THOMPSON as the New RAYGUN, who will (this is THEM talking) inject celebrity and persona into the campaign.

Unaccountably, it was Debates-book-THIEF Will who deflated him, saying that by the time RAYGUN had (been nominated?) he had already crisscrossed the country (twice? or for two years?) "communicating beliefs. Can you name ONE THING Thompson believes?"

Sam came up with "THE FLAG."

Yass, our national elections are decided upon what camera-trained personalities "believe" about such things as THE FLAG.

at the end of a c-spin forum with a number reporters/newsies on stage, bemoaning the sagging and general malaise of the profession and the disenchantment of the reading public, there was a question from one of the audience.

The questioner strongly implied that the problem comes from there being no real journalists and far too many overpaid shills for corporate interests who had no interest in reporting on the corruption and incompetence and were selling the policies of professional politicians. The question had to do with the fact that it was the lack of credibility that was driving away audience and that, with the focus only on sensationalism, it was their own lack of merit were at the heart of the problem.

Donaldson, refusing to look at such things and hinting that it was really the fault of the internet and free news, launched into a passionate defense and claimed the "reporters" were doing a good job and everything was cool; the audience was a victim of the overwhelming sharp divisions within the country and would only go where their own points of view were reinforced.

At that point he became a non-entity.

Years ago he had Sen. That said, Thompson’s base of support is perhaps the quintessential cult of personality. Consider this gem from Rep. Zack Wamp (R-Tenn.), one of Thompson’s boosters on the Hill.

If there’s a more inane basis for supporting a presidential candidate, I can’t think of it.

Thompson is tall, therefore he can “rise above” partisanship? He has a deep voice, so we’ll “feel” secure? Please. I might expect such talk from a 12-year-old with a crush on a movie star, but Wamp is a member of Congress. Show a little pride, man.

Let me ask you a hypothetical question. What do you think America would do if Canadian soldiers were firing dozens of missiles every day into Buffalo, N.Y.? What do you think our response would be if Mexican troops for two years had launched daily rocket attacks on San Diego -- and bragged about it?

I can tell you, our response would look nothing like Israel's restrained and pinpoint reactions to daily missile attacks from Gaza. We would use whatever means necessary to win the war. There would likely be numerous casualties on our enemy's side, but we would rightfully hold those who attacked us responsible.

He caused the slide into the recession with his tax cuts and sneaky bills. He did not cause the Berlin Wall to be torn down as most say. It was half down when he made his speech in front of it. He played that act well. Look at the Iran-Contra Affair with all the exchange of guns and ammo. That's another thing the press always shies away from. I was alive and well in the 80's and I sat thru gas lines for up to an hour at a time. So don't tell me reagan was the next thing to a saint. Wonder what he would have done if a Russian president had moved nuclear missiles within a few hundred miles of our country and was ready to set them off. Thank God we had a president like JFK, but you never hear anything of what JFK did for this country only the half ass actor reagan.
