"In the counsels of Government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the Military Industrial Complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together."
- President Eisenhower - January 1961

1. Now THAT was a Republican worth his salt
Do you know what'd you'd call a Republican like him nowadays, though?

5. Same goes for Goldwater...
I watched "Mr Conservative: Goldwater on Goldwater" a few weeks ago. I'd forgotten how progressive (pro-choice, pro gay rights) Barry Goldwater could be, especially in his later years.

Goldwater and JFK were planning to have a series of debates in the run-up to the '64 election - they were going to travel on the same plane, land, debate and then take off again to another city. Can you imagine that happening today?

He also was a very talented photographer:

Today's Republican party would never run a dumb-ass like Ike.

"A government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity."

The video stops at 14:17, does it work after that for you?

6. accesibble from Public library
thank you. I just sampled it, this was a first time for me to see and listen to a video. I'll shift to a different computer at the senior center to finish listening. He was a breathing spell for me at the time, but I've since read of his many mis-steps.
