4. I don't agree with this guy's implied definition of liberal.
He seems to have bought into the stereotype that liberalism has to do with one's view of spending national wealth. In his view, liberals are the people who see an alleged excess of "stuff" and want to spread it around. That is exactly how liberalism has been defined by our political opponents for the last thirty years. Tax and spend.

I have a broader view of liberalism, which seeks to expand things like civil liberties, tolerance, equality under the law; and tends to favor the interests of regular people over the interests of those who are already powerful. Certainly, liberalism can use national wealth to achieve its goals, just as conservatives have done (and as the current administration has clearly shown). But liberalism is not defined by spending any more than conservatism is.

The reason why the word "progressive" is so popular these days is because the word "liberalism" has been so demonized that it cannot be safely used by those who are liberal.
