October 24th, 2007

Woman waves blood-colored hands at Secretary Rice, 4 others arrested

5 CODEPINK members arrested this morning at the House Foreign Relations Committee Hearing with Secretary Condoleezza Rice.

Those arrested, Desiree Fairooz of Arlington, TX, Liz Hourican of Phoeniz, AZ, Lori Purdue of Indianapolis, IN, Medea Benjamin of San Francisco, CA and Zool Zulkowitz of Washington, D.C.

Desiree Fairooz of Texas approached Secretary Rice with red paint on her hands to deliver the message that the Bush Administration had the blood of the Iraqis and American military on their hands. Chair Lantos ordered her out. Ms. Fairooz was escorted out by security guards yelling "war criminal." The Capitol Police then viciously yanked Liz Hourican of Arizona and Lori Purdue of Indiana from their seats, pulling Liz by her arms, legs, feet as she screamed in pain, "you are hurting me! What are you doing?" over and over. They were both dragged into the hall and promptly arrested. Medea Benjamin remained in the hearing room and was asked to leave after flashing a peace sign with her fingers. She collected her belongings, left and was walking down the hall when 2 Capitol Police approached her and cuffed her. Zool Zulkowitz was with arrested with Ms. Benjamin.

The Deputy Chief of Staff of the House Foreign Relations Committee contacted the Capitol Police later in the day to again relay that their is a policy of that committee to not arrest Citizen protesters but to instead escort them out of the room. The Deputy asked for the CODEPINK members to be released promptly from custody.

Is holding up a Peace Sign illegal in the United States of America?

. .

THIS IS WHO SHOULD BE ARRESTED!!!

7. Police are abusing them (code pink) now. They have their pictures up
at the police stations. Each time they arrest them the police behave more and more brutally.

I'm telling you they are injuring them each time they arrest them now. And that they are trying to intimidate and silence those code pink people and war dissenters.

The fact that Pelosi and Reid are not impeaching is really frightening. Each day that goes by, we lose more and more. Why don't the 'masses' care?

Actually, she had to go to the hospital. :(

and the charges were dropped due to the "aggressiveness" of the 'cops'!

10. I am at the Code Pink house
Lori Perdue was released tonight. She is shaken up--she was the second person pulled out of her chair and arrested. Liz, who was the first woman yanked, was injured (head and ankle) and was taken to the hospital, treated and released to jail. Medea is also in jail.

Desiree will be charged with assault on a federal officer. This is a serious charge, people.

But she did it because we have to speak up, or all is lost.

If you care about this country, if you are worried about the war, global warming, the economy, or democracy leaving town, you MUST call Congress. I cannot even begin to LIST the crimes we have witnessed or become aware of in the past three months.

I will try to write more in the next few days, but it is overwhelming us. We need your help.

Lori was the second one pulled out of her seat - and she was arrested protesting the funding and is on probation for a year. She has been VERY careful not to do anything to be arrested for, yet she was dragged out of her seat and arrested today. Now she faces a year in jail. PLEASE call your congressman - Lori does not deserve this!!!

the congressional switchboard got me a "Hi Lets talk!" line twice!
try this one
1-800-862-5530, or 1-877-851-6437

Second.....neither one of my congressmen's aides had heard of Medea Benjamin! Tom Allen's was aware of Code Pink. Michaud's was not. At least both of them are co-signed onto H res 333! But it's as if these people inhabit a different universe in DC!
My God she's been on my radar since Oct 26 2002. And all my fellow Dems up here in rural Maine!
I think we need to cut the Democrats a break. I KNOW my Congressmen. Maine is a small state in population ( if not in miles) When you can have breakfast with one of them or march in a parade, and there are only 8-10 people, it gives you an opportunity to really communicate. Michaud's aide was working on the clean water act today. I think that article on this board was right, ( How do the Republicans Do it?)the Repugs throw out so much confusion, paper work, obfuscation, over every little issue while sneaking in the important stuff over night, keeping the Dems running to catch up! Even while they are the majority party now.
I did glean from Leahy's aide the other day, that he is almost finished with the contempt of congress work, that he flew down from VT during recess to announce. SOme on this board were very critical making snide remarks about his age etc. But he has kept his word and worked on it diligently. Just because he didn't come out and make daily progress reports to the public ( which would have been counterproductive and created a lot of repug time wasting flak) doesn't mean he forgot or dropped it!
Help them out, keep them informed, memorize their numbers, call often. I called and bitched yuesterday because I resceived my full color 117 page glossy Medicare booklet for 2008. It weighed one pound! I wouldn't mind if they also paid my few Dr's bills BUT THEY DON'T! Poor rural postal carrier, she has a bad back and she had to unpack repack and deliver about 600 pounds of paper from Medicare!

This is where our paranoia has led us. The police are ready to jump on 50 yr old women to prevent them from making any move or gesture to demonstrate solidarity or opposition to the goons.

This is deplorable. I understand Code Pink wanted to make a statement, but this lady certainly was within her rights.

At least she didn't get tazed.

51. Agree with you --- Congressional Police should be retrained --
and look more like the Democratic Party is back in control of things --

This is at least the second instance -- there was a gentleman a few weeks ago who was arrested for no reason -- and when he questioned his removal from the line -- he was arrested and ended up with a broken ankle!!!

This is still the BUSHED Congressional Police and Democrats should take this in hand ---
It also reminds me of the harassment of Rep. Cynthia McKinney not so long ago.
This is all intentional and Democrats should see that these tactics are changed.

In a democracy, I think we should be able to handle a few women in the audience, saying nothing, and holding up their hands in a peace symbol.

I did call Reid, Pelosi and Hoyer's offices ---

Pelosi's office kind of immediately brushed me off to the message line ---
Reid was a wait for a live person who listened -- no comment.
Hoyer's office provided a more spontaneous response from someone there --

In each office, I certainly left the ending message that we need IMPEACHMENT as a total response to what is happening in America.

26. 24% .. and yes I am prayin for ALL Code Pink PATRIOTS!
Here's the reality folks. It does not matter that she was arrested along with some other Code Pink ladies. ONLY 24% support the selected queenie SELECTED prez bush. Yeah, sure the DC police acted FASCIST. But really folks, we have A LOT to be thankful to CODE PINK (and why I'm at it, MOVEON.ORG too!) These groups do a lot more than we do, God bless our good intentions. We type and type, send letters, emails and even call our DC reps. But these women have ACTIONS and are leading the way to getting our Democracy and government back. We could learn a lot from them, God bless them.

Again, think about it. What you see in the video may seem like FASCIST type tactics to "scare" Code Pink and us, but it won't work. The US government who have stole elections are in the MINORITY even despite the fact that we have ROLLOVER Dems like Reid and that SKANK pelosi acting like republicons. They have ONLY 24% support! It's not like the 1st war like Afghanistan or the 2nd like Iraq. NOW the majority of Americans are with us.

And what they did to this lady who was exercising her 1st amendment right is VERY simple:

they only helped the 24% supporting bush become EVEN smaller!

Living it and loving it!

GOD BLESS YOU CODE PINK!
I'm lighting an incense in your honor!
I SEE IT IS MORE SERIOUS ... but we are behind you. Less than 24% support bush, the MAJORITY of Amerians are with you!

28. You'll never be allowed into Canada now, Medea,
you dangerous terrorist person you. Fancy making a peace sing with your fingers in public and in the halls of Congress, no less! Thank goodness the cops were there to stop it before it got too far. Let her get away with making a peace sign with her fingers and next she'll be making a much larger and more visible peace sign on cardboard and holding it in the air to broadcast her subversive, pro-terrorist, anti-American message far and wide.

Fortunately for us Canucks, our PM Stephen Harper's, border protection agents goons are ever vigilant to prevent this subversion from creeping across the border and stabbing us in the back while we are standing guard for the "true north strong and free."

Medea Benjamin and Lt. Col Ann Rice (Ret.) denied entry to Canada because their names were in an FBI criminal database:

43. We Need to be Honest
I saw the video and I was immediately outraged. I imagined this poor slight woman sitting in the audience flashing nothing but a peace sign and getting arrested for it. This is not the case. I do not know the laws and regulations of behavior in this setting but you can clearly see her standing, shouting and holding a sign. The video was purposefully misleading. When we do this we fan the flame of our own hypocrisy. Not good.

Is Rice a murderous sociopath? Definitely!

47. Wrong!! Medea was sitting in the gallery!! - Not holding any sign!!
I saw the whole incident on TV and the cops went into the gallery and grabbed those women and dragged them out for sitting there!

They weren't doing anything!! The one with the red hands was the one that approached Condi, not the others.

Besides, the Capital Police had already been told NOT to arrest ANY protesters!!

Since when is it against the law for a citizen to not be able to go to a hearing and protest it?

IT ISN'T!!!!

Edited on Thu Oct-25-07 05:04 PM by FreedomUnderground
Okay, that clip proves even less than the picture I posted. I saw that at the beginning of all of this. It does not show her being assaulted for "flashing a peace sign".

As I said, I do not know what behavior is legally tolerated in this venue but you CAN NOT prove that she did not behave in a way that goes against that rule (be it as it may) PERIOD

Just please remember this; if we get a Democrat elected as President you MUST tolerate and defend the same behavior from those dissenters as our own or you are a hypocrite pure and simple.

She and the others were sitting there!!

The only one who wasn't sitting was the one with red hands!!

It's not THEIR HOUSE...IT's THE PEOPLE's HOUSE!!

There have been protests and dissent going on there since forever!!

I support protesting ALL asshat warmongers!!

81. I Hope You'll See...
This exchange has been between you and me and I have tried to be reasonable. You have launched in to some kind of prejudicial mode and abandoned reality. For the few that have been following- this is precisely how to energize the opposition. Everything Breeeze54 has done in this exchange, including the headline of the original post has been a prime example of what you would get from a freeper when challenged. If you can step outside of this and see it clearly you will help yourself become a much more effective advocate for your principals.

You have learned nothing about what I believe on the issue of free speech and dissent but rather have attacked me for daring to question your assertions. I have produced a Liberal radio show, as well as television campaign ads for democratic candidates and managed and edited liberal websites. I am no freeper in disguise. My point in this thread was to make others aware that this kind of choir preaching doesn't cut it in the real world. Dissent and free speech are core principals in a healthy Democracy and of prime importance and it is because of this that I try to get my facts straight.

Incidentally, those that say that "Free Speech Zones" are unique to the Bush regime are also wrong. Bill and Hillary also use and have used "Free Speech Zones" although, like all things fascist, Bush Jr. has greatly expanded their use (as he has with signing statements).

America is going to become a totalitarian state.

Probably more Fascist than Religious, but it will have elements of both.

Certainly the press, the courts, and seemingly the congress, have already accepted the concept of Führerprinzip

On the whole, I preferred Democracy. However most will be happy under the New Order.

48. I Hope You Can See...
how much like a ditto head you sound. All I'm trying to say is that when we apply the same "do no wrong" logic to our actions as the right we hurt our cause.

I can see that I am a minority among my own party but I would rather be a minority with principal than the opposite. To do the right thing may cost us in small battles but the rewards would be much greater in the long run. I hold the unAmerican attitude that cheaters never win... even when they "win".

If the Democratic party undertook the same practices as the Republican to secure its victories they would not truly be victories and would fall in the light of truth. As will this Republican administration. The bullshit has to stop.

41. Home of the brave ...
... but no longer the home of the free.

This is just the beginning. Actually I'm surprised anyone that even looks like they're a decenter is allowed anywhere near government hearings and such. After all since bush has been in office we've had "free speech zones" (which are blatantly illegal) for protesters and no one can even get past the screening process of any event our imperial leader attends.

Since the 60's and 70's the Police State has perfected crowd control weapons. There are 800 so-called "detention camps" sitting empty that Halliburton has built across this country. When - not "if" - we attack Iran all Hell will break loose and make what the Police State is doing now look mild.

Currently there are an estimated 84,000+ on the "terrorist watch list" and growing. This is the same tactic the Nazi's used after the "false flag" Reichstag Fire attack. Their list grew to included intellectuals, known and suspected decenters, homosexuals, Gypsies and just about anyone else that didn't "go along" with the state. We're much closer to being there then ever before.

52. home of the brave indeed
Can you support the detention camp claim? Is there a way to get hold of the watch list? It should be public under the freedom of information act. I suspect its labeled TOP TIPPITY TOP Secret though. There is one thing that stands out very loudly to me. Police officers (like all representatives) take a vow to uphold the constitution and the laws. Perhaps we should be writing them also and sending them copies of statutes. There needs to be greater awareness given to these "protectors". Something is happening from the top down and its trickling into their minds and "duty". Is there a law that punishes those who deny another from lawful life? Are the arrestors suspended, slapped on the wrist at all?

There are currently going to be peace marches everywhere this weekend. I dare say it is a true test. If they go down in violence, all might be ending and eroding as we know it. A word of the wise: have your passport ready. Don't look back if need be. Although that sounds reactionary, I had met a survivor of the Holocaust in my youth. She told me her story. She survived because she was fearless and did not look back, her family also know saw the signs. None of them said it might get better, its an honor to ware an arm band, etc. Personally I'd rather stay and opt for a reawakening.

We must dig our trenches of sound mind, body, and soul; fill our heart with love and stand together to redevelop our nation. Power to the pink! Power to the people.

58. Here's some -
Here's two stories but if you search there's many more articles on these camps.

http://www.gnn.tv/headlines/7254/Homeland_Security_To_Build_Detention_Camps_In_The_United_States

http://sploid.com/news/2006/02/halliburton_bui.php

As for the terrorist list there was a woman from the GAO on C-SPAN Washington Journal this morning that has all the info. I'm sure you can see a repeat or go to C-SPAN site to get what you need to know.

As far as having your passport ready, indeed I've been giving serious thought to leaving. I really don't see things getting better before they get much worse and I've been throwing bricks at authorities since the sixties and I'm easy to eliminate. But most likely I'll stay and keep ranting and when they come to get me, hell, I'm an old-fart now and would rather die fighting them than fighting cancer.

Regarding peace marches - often the trouble, if any, starts when the police show up.

Police officers (like all representatives) take a vow to uphold the constitution and the laws. Perhaps we should be writing them also and sending them copies of statutes. There needs to be greater awareness given to these "protectors".

I certainly agree with you there. Police don't have an easy job, and I appreciate what they do to keep communities safe on a day-to-day basis. Their attitudes and heavy handed actions toward protesters usually leave a lot to be desired, though.

53. Agree -- and Congressional Police need to be retrained for democracy ---
and look more like the Democratic Party is back in control of things --

61. Just confirms how wrong Namoi Wolf and all of us extremist

... not quite right in the head tin-hats are about what is happening to Amerika.

"The adults are back in charge"

Which is why instead of juvenile actions like blow-jobs in the White House, we now are being treated to unremitting war, tyranny, and the abolition of human rights.

Sig Heil

Oh, and God Bless America: 'cause we remember Romans 13:1-2 “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.”

Besides, these lib-rals were not even in a Free Speech Zone! They were in a US congressional hearing for Christ’s sake: Certainly not the place to seek or speak truth.

"Throw away the key" Says I, for this, by God, is the United States, and we FEAR.

We FEAR GOD - as, according to His revealed word, that is the beginning of wisdom. We FEAR liquids on airplanes, we FEAR non-European-descent-citizens, we FEAR TERROR, we fear thought, education, equality, opportunity: We FEAR everything!

But we especially FEAR being hated for our freedom.

And, by God, we have decided to do something about it!
