CURRENT TV Countdown w/ KEITH OLBERMANN - 31 Oct. 2011: Keith discusses the latest smear attempts toward Occupy Wall Street demonstrations from Fox News w/ former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer. Spitzer gives his ideas on where the movement can go next.

He says the crackdown on OWS "shouldn't be happening in New York," and that Gov. Cuomo should be called "Governor 1%."

SPITZER: "This is almost exclusively a peaceful, well-thought-out protest by people who care: that's why the public is with them."

OLBERMANN: "And you have written now, many people had made points similar to this, but I think you made it more strongly than others and I want to know why in particular, that they have, that there is already a victory to declare..."

SPITZER: "Oh, absolutely."

OLBERMANN: "...changing the dialogue. How do you sustain that when temperatures are not sustainable. It's a symbol that makes it sustainable, but the symbol involves people staying there."

SPITZER: "Well, well, look, first of all, the frustration at these so-called pundits, and thoughtful people, on major editorial pages saying all they're doing is showing up. Wait a minute, they, being the Occupy Wall Street folks, have done more to change what we're talking about, then all the politicians in Washington who pretend to be progressives or liberal - all of them put together, maybe except Elizabeth Warren.

They've done nothing that comes close to what this group of students and thoughtful young kids has done. So, that's why my hat goes off to them.

Now, what next? It is hard. It's going to be cold. So here are a couple of simple things. One: Every college kid in America goes home over Thanksgiving. Announce the day before Thanksgiving, when kids are getting home, huge rallies. Show the support on college campuses, which, from my sort-of experiential information, is huge. Get big-name musicians. Think back to the '60s, hate to say, you and I can do that, Pete Seeger, get Bruce out there. Get them to say in every spot the day before Thanksgiving, huge rallies to make our, sort of, opening statement as we go into the next chapter.

The other thing I would do, you know what, maybe we are going to take two weeks off, but during that time, get the Robert Reiches, the Joe Stieglitzes, the Paul Krugman, the really thoughtful, smart folks, come up with a couple of ideas.

Now, here is what I think is the clincher. Come January, every governor, every mayor, gives a State of the State, State of the City - leverage off them. The entire media is at every state capitol, at every city hall. Have a rally with 10,000 folks. Go to Albany, where we have a governor, hate to say it, in New York, who is opposing the billionaire's tax. Say 'Gov. 1 %, we're showing up and we're going to steal your story. You can be inside the chamber giving a typical speech, we're going to be there talking about real people. Have a 100,000 people in Washington the day of the State of the Union. Make those markers when we supposedly define the agenda. Mass huge numbers with musicians, with smart people...

And let me just add, they don't need advice from me. They have done an amazing job."

OLBERMANN: "You will recall, perhaps, the name Henry Ruth, who was one of the assistant prosecutors when they eliminated the special prosecutor during Watergate, and the recollections of the night that they fired Archibald Cox, was of his office being flooded by telegrams most of which said 'Stay in your office!' And it didn't mean he could do anything staying in his office, but the presence, the symbol, can't be overrated here, can it?"

SPITZER: "That's right, absolutely not. And you NEED a symbol like that. That's why Zucotti Park, Liberty Park, has become so powerful, especially - I mean, let's face it - what the NYPD and others are doing, we need to dig deeper and find out what's going on, certainly, hate to say it, has helped Occupy Wall Street. It has made every person say 'Hey, wait a minute, these are basically good individuals who are peaceful, who are doing what they think is important for our country, and we agree with them. Why are they being arrested?'

OLBERMANN: "Right, and having been governor, you would know, what governor would ever allow rubber bullets to be used on unarmed protesters."

SPITZER: "Or the governor of New York trying to kick them out of state parks. Just shouldn't be happening in New York."

OLBERMAN: "Not good PR."

SPITZER: "No."

4. (possibly) there is your man... inspiring,on the iside track... but no.....ummmm
Electable to the current presidency......... NO! (unfortunate because the hooker scandal)(but wasn't a it right wing uber-corporatist and media hit squad 101 from the start...obviously). Look this man may not be a saint; but NO-ONE that are the TPB are. So skip the phony Christian (especially Taliban-Christian shit) and elect a 'Wonk'.... albeit a (BAD ASS WONK!). Want shit done...? This man has the Resume. I know (to his detraction) Spitzer oozes ego: but at least he's sincere and eagle eyed in a legal sense . Its was great that he wanted to go after banking crooks, and hopefully through others his legacy will continue. But beyond that he has spoken for American principles(Not t.v. gossip principles). I'm not saying that Spitzer is some kind of 'liberal' (honestly who knows??), BUT HE IS A SHARK and judicially progressive. Maybe what the Dem's need. Someone in his circle should talk to him seriously.

This is a war. Armour up. If all goes well, THIS AIN'T GONNA END LIKE YESTERDAY'S GENTEEL! among growing voices, this new 'Spartacus' voice can win. Fight at ALL COST but... WIN WITHOUT COMPROMISING OUR VALUES - Any compromised victory is a defeat and a disgrace. That should be the law.

run for office. The guy was great ( I am from NY) till they took him out. In fact, his slogan should be "I might have gotten laid, but I didn't fuck you over." I would vote for him in a NY minute over Cuomo.

34. Lots of presidents did that. Probably more did than didn't.
Things are changing fast, and what people remember him for is that he was going after those who brought down this economy when they stopped him.

Priorities are different now. His personal life did not collapse this economy but it was used against him, and us, to protect the criminals who eventually destroyed the world's economies. Meantime, had he been protecting Wall St. no one would said a word about his personal life.

... how many of them can say they DON'T have a hooker (or drug, or gambling, or ... or ...) problem? They all keep it hush-hush wink, nudge. But Spitzer was a threat to the Ol Boys Club, so they 'outed' him. Fuckers.

23. OWS is making a difference, banks backing off, politicians getting scared
Other banks were more than ready to follow Bank of America's lead. Now Bank of America has backed off. Good. Occupy Wall Street has given a voice to angry & frustrated voters. Accepting the status quo has gone out the window. While I doubt any of us will be lucky enough to get interest free loans like Banks do in Bailouts, it might be a good time to remind them...it's our money in our savings accounts, that banks use, and we ought to be getting a lot more than a stinking 1% on that. Use to be about 15% in the 1980's.

Some politicians are getting on the bandwagon saying they support OWS. Whether or not they are sincere, we shall soon see. Talk is cheap. I'd love to see them scrap that god awful "credit card reform" law & start over using Bernie Sanders model, and kiss usury goodbye. And really go after banks with some prosecutions instead of "deals".

NY lost a lot when we lost Spitzer. I know our New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, is trying to follow in Spitzer's footsteps & go after these predatory banks. I only wish the Obama administration would support him.

I miss Spitzer & Weiner. I only wish we would have handled their "sex scandals" the way Republicans do.

Sptizer's resignation. He had made apoint of being against prostitution, and he had been the state of New York's Attorney General before he went on to being the governor of the state of New York.

George W's government used Department of Homeland Security to trace the way that money flowed into and out of Spitzer's bank accounts via wire transfers. Without DHS, I doubt he'd have been found out for visiting call girls (Or having them visit him.)

Yep, anothr reason why DHS doesn't make me feel safe at all. Whenever it is convenient for the Powers that Be, it will be used to affect the poitical status and stature of someone who is an enemy - not of America - but of her One Percent, Ripoff Artists at the Top.

33. Nov . 5 "Move your money day" ... but it's CREDIT CARDS STRIKE they'd fear !!!
What would even ONE MONTH of our not using credit cards do to the banks?

That's the kind of STRIKE we should be pulling -- !!!

We go out every day with our credit cards and make money for the banks!!

They do nothing but sit back and wait for the money to roll in!!

And all of the costs associated with the cards keep being rolled over into

the costs of consumer products!

LET'S HAVE A 30 DAY STRIKE ON USING CREDIT CARDS ... AND SEE IF THE RATES

BEGIN TO COME DOWN!!??????????????????????

LESS than 1% on savings accounts/ CD -- but 26% and more on monthly balances

for credit cards ???????????????????????????

Thanks, Congress!!!

This couldn't have been done without the Congress being paid off!!

To bring Spitzer on down.

What an insight into it all that he offers.

And it is sad that this typeof insight is a rare commodity among our elected officials.

I love this section of the interchange between Olbermann and Spitzer -

Spitzer: "Now, here is what I think is the clincher.

I guess that includes Kucinich as well? :sarcasm:

I think what is happening now is a truly great thing and is really shaking things up all the way around!!! I say, let's not compare/divide but infiltrate from both the outside (Occupy) AND the inside (current progressives) i.e. Maxine Waters, Donna Edwards, Dennis Kucinich etc. in order to bring about progressive change in this country however it eventually shakes out to be ~
