"This is one of the most terrible things politicians (Republican Right Wing) have ever done and are still doing. Republican Senator Mitch McConnell along with Michelle Malkin and others including Fox Phony News are behind this." October 10 - Countdown w/ KEITH OLBERMANN

Rachel: "Just when you think you've found the person they can't possibly slime - I don't know, say, a 12-year-old kid just out of a coma, turns out, yeah, The bar does actually go that low. It's just astonishing."

10. DEATH THREATS AGAINST SICK KIDS????
I mean where does this end??? How sick are these fuckers?

And WHY aren't they called to task.

We criticize some lying sack of shit general in a relatively mild mannered way and the Republican MINORITY throws us down and twists our wrists until we scream uncle and condemn anything negative said about Betrayus.

But a radio talk show host with millions of listeners reveals the address of a very sick kid, and urges his listeners on to harrass him, to the point where this 12 year old sick boy is receiving death threats...

And a Republican Senator's office is caught releasing the same information -- name, address, etc.

And we DO NOTHING? The Repukes get away with this? What have we become? Where in the hell is our leaders' spines? Where is the outrage?

I'm so outraged right now that I'm afraid I am going to blow a gasket.

Slime mutherF*ckers. Scum of the earth. You deserve quadruple what happened to this boy, and I hope you end up in the gutter trying to pay your way out of the medical expenses.

I'll tell you exactly why they are doing this -- to shut up anyone else who has the courage to speak against the Fascist Pigs running this show.

18. The Free Republic is the realm of truth???
A lot of people here agree that most politicians are scum, and many of us are severely disappointed at the performance of many Democrats over the last year.

But we don't believe we are the sole holders of the truth. And unlike FP, people are pretty free to disagree with each other here, as long as they follow basic guidelines. One of course, is that we cannot actively work against a Democratic nominee, although you will certainly see a lot of debate against candidates before they become the official nominees.

24. Unfortunately, you didn't set anything straight, did you?
What you're saying is that their home is worth more than when they bought it. SO WHAT? Should they sell their home in order to pay medical bills? Or how about they go to one of those great gouging subprime lenders who are raping people? The kids were in a terrible car accident. Their family would have been decimated, financially, if it were not for CHIPS. Is that okay with you?

And, by the way, I am SICK of you dirty ass Republican SICKOS painting everyone with the same brush. When you fuck up and get caught, all you can say is, "But EVERYONE does it!" Guess what? NO, not EVERYONE does it. REPUBLICANS do it. Republicans fuck little boys and Republicans hide in the closet while putting the moves on people in public restrooms, Republicans lie us into an illegal war, Republicans SPY on their own people, Republicans torture, and REPUBLICANS stoop so low that they publish this boy's family's address on the internet. What pieces of shit! And when you're called on it, that's your only recourse, to say "everyone does it," like an eight year old caught on the playground punching their classmate bloody.

Guess what? We've had ENOUGH of it! We SEE what you are. Now get the FUCK out of here.

28. Ohhhhhh! The DREADED CLENIS again!
Pay very close attention: CLINTON IS NOT PRESIDENT ANYMORE. He has not been president for almost SEVEN years, got it? And, no matter how much the Republicans hunted him down, spending MILLIONS of taxpayers' dollars, they could only find "evidence" of a BLOW JOB. On the other hand, YOUR hero, Bushie boy, lied us into an illegal war and has put this country on the edge of obliteration, financially, constitutionally, and militarily. We are in DEEP debt, our dollar is not worth shit anymore, our military is decimated, and our constitutional freedoms are all but GONE. YOU DID THAT. YOUR hero did that. You OWN it.

Go back to your little dark hole. You remember that place, don't you? The place where they torture those who happen to be of non-Christian faith; where they hunt down sick little boys and their families, and screw the rest of them.

84. I know I should
Just let you keep going on with your FReeper madness - but how can you, no matter who you are, condone treating anyone the way this 12 year old has been treated?

I know several people who send their children to private schools and they do so on a tight budget. They make the choice to not go on vacations or upgrade their carpet and they borrow to do it. One couple shares a car and the husband takes a train to work. These parents cut corners everywhere so their children can go to a better school. So the Frost's home value increased after purchase. That is normal in todays housing market - Our home has doubled in value since we purchased it in '99 - but we are far from wealthy.

Your attempt to discredit the Democratic party by using Bill Clinton is a old song we have all heard. What ever Clinton did, pales in comparison to what the hooligans and thugs are doing to our country right now. The POTUS has called the Constitution "...just a goddamned piece of paper."

That pretty much sums up the way the Republican party has treated the Constitution since Ronald Reagan took office.

83. Let me set YOU STRAIGHT!
Fact I had insurance in 1991 when my son became ill (Dermatoymyositis) I owned a home and worked paid taxes since I was 15). My son spent ten years in and out of children's hospital, two years in a wheel chair and four years of physical therapy (needed more but insurance wouldn't cover). My husbands earnings put us just above the line for any government assistances. Fact- I lost my home, my job and my husband(not His child)and in debt big time because of medical cost over 2 million. Fact- I was left to start over at 45 with a very sick child. Is that what you would wish on your fellow TAXPAYING Americans? So your TRUTH is if we are unfortunate to have a catastrophic illness hit, we should be sent straight to the streets by selling our homes, cars and any thing else that enables us to work and pay those taxes. I do not wish what happened to me and my children on anyone else, so I get it and you do not. Universal Health Care is needed and with out that, than at the very least SCHIP.
btw my middle son was in the marine corp and what you spout does not have corp values.
My apologies to DU'ers for the length of this post, but this is an issue that really hits home for me, through the years of my son's illness I met many lower to middle income families who have gone through the same thing and this is just wrong. I would also like to let you all know that this is not DU member lame's story but mine, his wife Patty sorry I hijacked his account but couldn't let this one pass.

87. Sorry, sport, but I believe the fact was that there is a home in their
neighborhood worth nearly a half a million. Not necessarily theirs. (As an aside, I wonder what that mysterious home is worth today?)

While your heros go fact check and try to destroy some more lives, maybe they should look at some specifics instead of generalizations and innuendo.

Whatever their home is worth, I suppose it's a crime to not refinance and take out equity. Maybe that's their retirement nest egg. Who knows?

Anyway, supporting personal attacks on an injured 12 year old is pretty much what I would expect from the right. Don't you find it curious that anyone who espouses a view counter to the current regime is unpatriotic, crazy, undeserving, or didn't serve honorably? What are the odds of that?

Guess I SHOULD be buying lottery tickets.

Sheesh!

46. I don't think you "get" the purpose of extending the program
The really "pore" kids are already eligible for Medicaid. It's the children inbetween, the children of parents who aren't offered health care by their employers and who can't afford a $1200 a month premium. What are we as a nation to do with the 9 million children caught in this trap? Are we to just let them die because they're parents don't make enough money? I really look forward to your answer. I think.

48. Intelligent question finally
The current program covers family's making $80K a year. More than enough for great coverage. add a tax credit based on % of annual income so poor kids are covered and families that can afford it pay their fair share.

49. Another Idea
Limit liabilities in health care so the cost comes down. Everyone claims that Europe and Canada have better care. Why. LIMITED LIABILITIES. The further you can take lawyers out of the equation the lower the cost. But you can't have it both ways.

52. You are truly confused about health care issues
If I may suggest you research the facts first before you debate the issues any further.

The only ones who have the advantage of limited liabilities are the health insurance companies. They also have the power of negotiation in lowering costs...something uninsured people don't have. Lawyers have nothing to do with the cost of health care....greed has everything to do with it. If you're referring to the myth that lawsuits are the cause of higher healthcare costs, well, again, you're just repeating a lie. The number of lawsuits filed & settled in the past several years in no way matches the sharp rise in costs.

Well you are partly correct. Insurance companies get most of the credit.
But Lawyers having nothing to do with health care costs?
How about 260 Billion in 2005. Pocket Change?

89. LOL...well that's interesting and all...I'll go with the Govt's own statistics
The facts: Malpractice costs are .62 percent of the nations health care expenditures. According to the Department of Health and Human Services actuaries most recent report on
growth in health care expenditures, in 2002 health care expenditures rose 9.3 percent to $1.553 trillion. Expenditures on malpractice premiums reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners that year were $9.6 billion, making malpractice costs about .62 percent of national health care expenditures. Malpractice costs rated only an eleven-word mention in the actuaries 13-page report.

after you have an Xray that finds an obvious tumor, only to have the tech fail to include it on the written report, even though he/she circled it, and drew an arrow to it.

BTW, it was cancer, and their incompetence enabled that cancer to grow and spread for another nine months.

In your world of limited liabilities, what price tag would you assign to that one?

50. Uh, no, your $80K figure is very misleading
A lot goes into determining whether a child is eligible for Medicaid or SChip. A family with 2 children earning $80K are in no way eligible for SChip however a family with 17 children and earning $80K most likely are. I find it interesting that in your posts throughout this thread, you rightfully claim that politicians lie to us, yet you repeat their propaganda in other remarks. It's very misleading of them to claim a family earning $80K is eligible for this program. What they fail to include is, you'd have to be a very large family first. That's part of how they determine eligibility...the cost of living per child.

Of course each state has a different scale, depending on the cost of living in that state. Obviously, a state like Alabama or MS will have a much lowerended scale because the cost of living isn't as high as it is in say NY or MD (where the Frost family lives.) Earning $45K in MD is not a lot of money, hence the children's eligibility for the program. Also, they didn't have to pay for their children's expensive tuition...they were accepted to the school on scholarship so that cuts out the argument that they're rich enough to afford private school. Obviously, they're not.

In Krugman's editorial today, he ended it by saying "only a truly vicious political movement would respond by punishing their injured children." You might want to ponder that quote before you continue defending the rightwing slime machine.

55. Case in Point
Granted that the system takes into account family size, geographic location and income an equation determining eligibility. What the system fails to account for is assets. Theoretically a family of 6 with an annual (show-able) income of $40K would qualify even if they had assets of 20 million as long as the assets were not liquid. Not saying this is even close to the situation here but is this plausible.

Also where is the cut off point? $80K OK but $81K does not qualify?

To date I've not heard of one Case of a kid dieing because health care was refused.

Last time I checked it was illegal to turn away critical care patients.

Most of the time doctors bend over back wards to save kids.

The point I trying to make was they could have chosen a better case study. One that was bullet proof. Instead they chose a family living in an expensive home, owning their own business, and making descent money.

there are pre-existing conditions and they have been turned down for health care by 3 companies.

they (the parents) are trying to do the right thing, he has a small business which has an asset, they are buying a home. this is the middle class dream.

and just because of one horrible accident they should sell their only assets to pay outrageous medical bills? Bills that are non existent in every other industrialized nation in the world?

I'll thank you for your service to your country, but know that I did everything I could to stop you and your comrades from having to go over to that hell hole that is Iraq. We had no business being there and still don't. Not a single hijacker or dollar came from Iraq in the attack of 9/11. because it is the lower and middle class who keeps this country afloat. what do you not get about that? and why do you want them to join the swelling ranks of the homeless poor? Instead you should be working on lifting the poor up to at least lower middle class instead of adding more to the streets.

I may be repeating what someone said earlier. So you want Halsey Frost to sell his home and business to pay for the family's health care?

If that money runs out... what should they do next?

I know plenty of middle class people who became bankrupt due to not having health insurance. Before all their health problems, they earned a decent living.

It's time for some sort of universal health care program in the United States.

Agreed. Sometimes a descent living don't cut it. How do you fix a system which cost keep going up mostly due to increased insurance costs on doctors and hospitals. How do you keep the best doctors and nurses? Socialize medicine drives them away. They have to be paid well to stay. Canada's system? Waiting 6 months for an MRI or Europe average 3 months wait to see an MD.

59. I live in the UK
And the waiting times are not that long on the NHS (what I've experienced so far). If it's not immediate (like an annual check up) it might be a long wait time (a month or so, as I went in for a mapping of my Cochlear Implant). If you want to seek advice, get a prescription, blood test or anything minor like that from a GP the appointment can take a couple of days to a week (not 3 months lol). If it's an emergency, then it's an emergency.

The seemingly fast times in the US (when I used to live there) are due to private health care. We do have private health care here in the UK and if you've got the money to pay for it, then go ahead.

1) You need to keep the medical malpractice suits down, which is why insurance for doctors and hospitals are SO high. I'm not trying to fault the doctor or the patient but the malpractice suits I've seen are ridiculous. In the UK, if a doctor accidentally removes the wrong kidney (due to miscommunication), you're entitled to thousands of pounds not MILLIONS of pounds.

It may seem that certain doctors get paid really well in some parts of the US, it's because they need the money for their insurance.

2) Universal Health Care relieves businesses of that burden of trying to give their employees health insurance. UHC is so pro-business, I'm baffled as to why you don't want it.

I'm in my twenties and only once I got a kooky doctor was when I was in Northern Ireland and came down with some sort of bug. I was 15 and he said I must be pregnant and thought my own mom was my grandma and my sister was my mom. I had a generally bad view of the NHS because of that incident and when I moved here my experiences have been so much more positive.

When I went in to get my CI mapped and get some parts replaced. My doctor gave me some parts for my CIs and I said, "I don't want too many parts because they're so expensive."

"You can have as many because they're free for you."

"What? How does that work?" (I never really realised this extent of NHS before then)

"You're covered under NHS and they pay for these parts."

Bless the US, there's some great things about it and I got some pretty good care out of them but getting things that I really need like batteries and spare parts for my CI, free, is really good. I wish that was the same in the US. I still pay for my medicine here but NHS pays for MOST of it and I pay like 3 pounds for my prescription. I don't get billed for appointments with my GP or my cochlear implant Doctor and I used to get billed in the States for the exact same thing. They may not seem to get paid as much as peers do in the US but they don't have to worry too much about their own insurance. For really good doctors, money isn't what drives them to work, it's caring for people.

67. Yep!
I feel that people think that doctors have some sort of "free time" during the day that they have to get an appointment RIGHT AWAY! The one thing I haven't done yet in the UK under the NHS (I much prefer the US) is a blood test. I did get a BT once in the UK and that was when I went to Oxford University for 3 months and needed it to check my sodium and calcium levels (Everything was A-OK). I waited a week to get the BT done and another week for the results. Probably because I wasn't covered under NHS then, so I've no idea how long the wait is here for BT results under the NHS.

In the US, I got my BT the same day I asked for one. And due to one of my parents being a doctor, I could get my BT results back that day as well.

I remember the day I got uninsured even though I was still living at home with my parents and preparing to go to the UK (I had 4 months to go). It was in February 2006 and they decided I was too old to be under my parent's family insurance so they stopped it. Insurance companies are so fickle.

I know that I got certain care that I would never have received here in the UK. Got certain education rights that I would have never received in the UK in the mid-to-late eighties. The UK has made great strides since then and I really do wish the US had something similar to NHS. I'm looking for a job here (work part-time at a pub) and I wouldn't have survived if I didn't have the NHS. The only thing that really ate into my income were my driving lessons, and boy were they expensive!! (44.50 per two hour sessions, a lesson is an hour!) It would cost me 230 for 10 lessons (which is roughly $470) plus 45 for the driving test. I passed my test after six tries... OUCH on my wallet. It was just far too expensive for me and I'm really glad I passed when I did. They were talking of increasing the fees by then.

and been told there are none available. None at all. They only schedule 2 months in advance and there simply were none. My mother called hers for a physical at 60 years of age and was given one an entire year in the future. I personally don't go to mine at all unless I need a prescription. The few times I have gone in for treatment, I wished I hadn't.

88. Ugh
I am sorry for you. My aunt has some sort of growth on her jaw (not cancerous) that she kept putting it off and then she finally went to the GP and it turned out that no one in Northern Ireland was specialised for her case. Same for the UK, so she visited my family in the US and they have a friend who specialises in what my aunt had and gave her treatment for free because of all the trouble she'd gone through (years of trouble!).

I have two CIs and I had another surgery before my first CI. The first surgery would be meaningless to others but it really helped me... insurance covered it. As soon as I was prepped for surgery, my doctor came in and said, "Bastards, they said they won't cover your CI!" and vowed to do it for free because he was so angry at the insurance company. The doctors who found out about my case literally bent them over and made them cover my CI. Getting a CI without health insurance can cost up to 10,000 bucks. I really needed it, as my last hearing aid was failing me and they wouldn't cover it because they didn't think it would "improve" my life! UGH!

So there's good and bad in the US health system... I don't know WHY there's no universal health care.

75. That is the truth. It is hard to get to see a doctor here even with good
insurance. There is no walk-in service where I get healthcare, so when I was deathly ill with bronchitis which I think was actually pertussis -- I was unable to see my doctor for days. To get an appointment for an annual physical takes about 6 months.

And the care is terrible, and this is with a top tier hospital and health care plan. My son died in that hospital because of neglect, but he was disabled and there was no way to sue because he wasn't considered to be worth anything.

78. You must be lucky in your experience of getting healthcare in the U.S.
Edited on Fri Oct-12-07 06:09 AM by Cookie wookie
There is no such thing as getting quick medical access for anything other than absolutely, totally obviously irrefutably life-treatening medical problems in my experience, which is with top tier hospitals and top tier health insurance. It takes a minimum of 6 months to get an appointment for a physical. When I broke my hand, it took a week to get an appointment and in the end, nothing was done, no referral to a specialist, who said it was too long since the injury so there was no point in doing anything.

I have a nightmare experience from hell emergency room saga with an elderly family memeber that I will never forget. Top hospital, aunt had staph from hlp surgery.

We waited 11 hours in the emergency room, with her on a gurney in a hall with a drafty doorway. People were packed in but there weren't enough doctors. They were flooding in with some kind of horrible stomach flu or food poisoning and were projectile vomiting all around us. One man was in terrible abdominal pain, sitting in a chair moaning for literally hours on end. Occasionally he would fall out of the chair onto the floor from the pain then get back up and sit. sometimes people would just leave without care. In the end, at 3 a.m. when my family memeber was finally seen, the condition was misdiagnosed, allowed to progress another week after the visit, which resulted in another hospital stay and more surgery which in itself was traumatic physically.

It was like Dante's inferno, and this is considered one of the top hospitals in the state.

I had a friend who was on a feeding tube which fell out in the hospital and the nurse just picked it off the floor and stuck it back in without cleaning it.

I could go on an on. Anyone who supports the system of healthcare we have in the U.S. either hasn't had any real need to use it or has been extremely fortunate or lucky -- so far.

I just had to reply to the nonsense spouted earlier in this thread. $45K in Maryland to raise a family is jack squat. It is an ok wage for a single person- but with the expenses of kids it is very little. I don't know if it is b/c Faux News and Rush are appealing to 70+ folks who already have paid off their homes, live off SS, and have no idea what $45K really is these days (sure in the 60s that was a decent wage) or b/c they appeal to people who live in extreme rural areas that are inexpensive, that this kind of a wage in Maryland can be passed off as "doing well".

Sometimes a descent living don't cut it.

A "descent living" is exactly what families like the Frosts would be facing if not for S-CHIP: a "descent" into poverty and bankruptcy, propelled into free fall by the repukes and corporate-owned DINOs who just made it more difficult for individuals (but not corps, natch) to declare bankruptcy in the first place! (Astronomical health care bills are the No. 1 reason for personal bankruptcies.)

They won't be able to declare bankruptcy any longer. They will simply lose all they have and then get medical care when they really are poor. See, we do have universal medical care in the US. It just requires that you live in poverty to get access to it. And if it takes you long enough to get impoverished that your medical condition has worsened it is your own damn fault.

I have a friend who was given a staph infection when he had heart surgery. The doctors neglected it and it got so bad his health is totally destroyed except somehow he's still alive. He couldn't work and couldn't get medicaid benefits even though his family is totally poor -- has no assets. Not sure how that works, but he couldn't get care. Nor could he sue for negligence that caused the condition because of the healthcare laws that the Repubs instituted under sieg heil Bush.

66. I Am Beginning To Think That Maybe We Need
a government sponsored plan to get them some (of whatever kind they require) just so they will leave the rest of us the hell alone and quit trying to make us all as miserable as they are.

69. government plan
You mean a government plan to allow Republicans to have shit house sex in airports?

I'm sure Dubya would find an argument in favor of that being "fiscally responsible."

68. We are missing something here
I can't place it, but it must be here somewhere.

This entire situation with the Frost family is being fueled by something that has been eluding me from the beginning. I am no closer to finding it now than I was when this story broke.

None of the information that the right has offered up accounts for their reaction. And I can't see the underlying motive.

I suspect that the unspoken motive is so obvious to the likes of Malkin and Limbaugh that they feel no need to speak it. But it would be informative if they would speak it.

The SCHIP program in and of itself doesn't seem to be at the heart of this. The right has been critical of programs like SCHIP for clearly stated and understood reasons. But it isn't federal funding of abortion. The SCHIP program just doesn't seem inherently controversial enough. People who use the SCHIP program aren't met by a phalanx of angry anti-SCHIP protesters.

It isn't the Frost family themselves, either. Its not like they make a living selling stem cells on eBay.

I don't find the argument that they are attacking this child because he is 'fair game' terribly convincing from the right. Based on the standards the right is imposing on themselves, the political landscape is a target rich environment. Okay. I buy that they are bastard coated bastards with a bastard filling. And I buy that they do consider this family to be 'fair game'. But why don't they go after more targets like they are gunning for this family? There is a lot of 'fair game' out there that the right isn't hunting with much gusto at all.

Take for example the seven active duty soldiers who wrote that op-ed piece in the NYT. I recall that the Limbaughs and Malkins had something nasty to say about those soldiers and the op-ed, but I don't recall it getting to this level of toxicity. (And clearly, the right is willing to attack the wounded and the dead.)

Way back when the right was going ape shit over the Terri Schiavo story, I could at least comprehend what the right was all bunged up about. I thought they were as wrong as they could be, but at least I knew why they were doing the wrongest thing humanly possible.

But this?

The speech that the kid delivered seemed like a mild speech to me. There were no passive-aggressive puns about treason. The kid didn't accuse the President of war crimes. He read a speech making a simple argument designed to persuade the President to reverse his position on vetoing a bill. The tone of the speech seemed down right respectful. (I will admit that I haven't translated the speech from English to Bat-shit Crazy Esperanto.)

The only reason I even know about this kid's speech is due to the severe reaction that these right-wingers had to it. I am skeptical that the MSM would have given any attention to this kids speech at all if some right-wingers hadn't gone into a berserker rage about it.

It is one thing to see someone shoot themselves in the foot. It is another thing entirely to see someone take careful aim at their own foot and shoot every toe off. Then reload and shoot off the toes of their other foot. When someone is doing something so clearly against their own interest and so clearly counter-productive for no visible reason, I tend to wonder why.

Can anyone see the bedrock reason for the right-wing getting medieval on the Frosts? Try as I might, I can't even find a bad reason.

I'm stumped, folks.

71. Not Just This Instance That Stumps Me
The only thing I can come up with is that they think that invalidating others validates themselves.

72. me too
My feeling is it is one of three possiblities. Either these right wingers are blowhard bullies trying to pick on an easy target (why don't you pick on someone your own size? Or age? Or, in the case of Rush Limbaugh, someone with the same waist size --- whaddya think: the Caucasian, elitist version of Fat Albert?) or they are so completely out of touch with their "silver-spooned, country club-belongin', Bible-thumpin', Mom and apple pie-lovin', Reagan-worshippin', gay-hatin', traditional family value-preachin'" GOP ideology that they can discern the forest from the trees anymore.

The last possibility is that they truly are heartless, evil bastards that don't give a fuck about anyone who isn't a part of their sterile, affluent, Christian, establishment demographic and refuses to buy into their fucking bullshit rhetoric.

The more the war has dragged on, the more I am convinced it is the last possibility I mentioned.

74. one more thing
The most ironic thing about hard core right wingers is that while they love to preach the gospel of "America is a Christian nation" and that "God prefers America," they're at the head of line to condemn gays and women who have had abortions to hell, the need to keep the rich richer and the poor poorer, and promoting bigotry and prejudice at every opportunity.

Yes, how ironic --- "Thou shall not judge, lest ye be judged," "It is easier for a rich man to go through the eye of a needle than to enter the kingdom of heaven," and "Whatsoever ye do unto the least of my brethren, that ye do unto me."

Of course, maybe these advanced concepts are hard for those who read the Bible literally, and still believe that Noah was over 500 years old when he built the ark.

105. Just a guess, but they're still trying to pretend that health insurance is affordable
unlike the potential menace of an expensive "socialized" national health plan and that the real problem is people who are unwilling to "take ownership" and "have personal responsibility" for their own medical bills.
