If the plan for the Keystone XL pipeline to bring bring tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas is carried out, environmental disaster will ensue.

Tar sands mining has already devastated large parts of Alberta. The pipeline route crosses the Ogllala Aquifer, one of the world's largest aquifers, the source of 30% of the groundwater used for irrigation in the United States. Worse, tar sands represent a fossil fuel, a new source of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, contributing to the planet's steady warming: Burning all the tar sands in the world would add about 200 parts per million of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. (Until about 200 years ago, carbon dioxide made up only about 275 parts per million of the atmosphere; it is now dangerously high at 388 parts per million.)

President Obama is deciding whether to grant a certificate of ‘national interest’ that would enable the Keystone XL pipeline. Tarsandsaction.org is a group of people putting their bodies on the line -- through civil disobedience and arrest -- to help him decide that the answer is No. Tarsandsaction.org is holding daily direct action at the White House from now through September 3.
