Republican Senator Tom Coburn told town hall attendees in Tulsa Oklahoma that Medicare is unconstitutional and a "family responsibility". The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

2. As I have said 50 times on DU....Tom Coburn is an asshole.
 Why Dylan RatAgain keeps refering to him as a reasonable republican just doesn't make sense to me...

3. Families do take care of their parents and grandparents but they
cannot take care of them AND afford the cost of medical care (medications, supplies often including diapers, needed surgeries, doctors visits, etc.) at the same time. If grandma has Alzheimer's or a child like my daughter is severely disabled one member of the family is needed in the home to provide care. That takes the income of one of the breadwinners away from the family. That in itself is an economic hardship. Most families need two breadwinners in the home to survive today. Then add the medical care on top of that and no way can they pay for those costs.

He is crazy or senile - the old days of homemakers in the home all day caring for the family are long gone due to rising prices. And medical costs have skyrocketed at the same time. In staying home to care for my daughter (as a divorced mother getting only $20.00 a month child support) I sacrificed my own future. He is so out of touch that it isn't even funny. Isn't he a doctor? I pity his patients and their families.

For those interested back when I got my divorce $20.00 a month was about what you could expect to get for child support. In my case the judge knew about my disabled daughter and he wanted to be absolutely sure that I could get welfare to help her. He even said as much in the hearing. I assume he was not a rethug.

4. Cenk was furious
and yet was much more composed than I was when he read those quotes. Coburn is a klansman in a suit and tie.

6. Need to shift finances to cover costs
When the company I worked for switched from a non-contributory retirement plan to a 401K we said you need to give us a floating pension, too. The company said, "We can't do that or we'd loose too many people." Well tough shit! -Something's got to give.

If the Repubs want to do away with Medicare then let them go in and fix the costs associated with health care and have the corporations pay higher salaries to help cover the future costs that will be incurred by these families! Somethings got to give.

Alternatively - The Congress needs volunteer to have their benefits cut so that they can feel the pain of the policy changes they make.

Why do we pay them so much money AND give them great health care AND give them a great pension? they have no idea of the plight of the common person!

Why do we pay them so much money when they are helping the rich and not the common people?

Why do we pay them at all when they are totally focused on blocking any progress in order to make the president look bad?

Their mission statement should be: "We are here to to make the lives of all Americans better with every decision we make."

What are we paying these people for? - NOTHING (until the next election when they get voted out of office!)
