4. Roberts obviously believes buying elections is part of democracy.
Pretty soon he will rule that directly bribing voters is a perfectly legal expression of a corporate person's free speech rights.

5. The Supreme Court is at the root of all evil in the US.
If not for them, we would NOT have had W as a president. If not for them, we wouldn't have had mystery money flowing into RepubliCON coffers and gotten all these RepubliCON state governors and legislatures. If not for them, Wall Street and Corporate fat cats would NOT be controlling what remains of our democracy.

The Supreme Court, an unelected black robed junta, is responsible for all the problems in America.

Nothing will change until the Supreme Court changes. They are blight on our democracy.

6. The Founding Fathers blundered when they made the appointments for life.
They had far to much faith in those who would be appointed to be loyal Americans who were determined to protect the Constitution and not influenced by politics. Men of honor. The Republicans that dominate the court are ideologues who don't give a damn about the average citizen.

7. Apparently in the days of our founding
it was rare for a person to be so downright evil as these present day "conservative" justices.

8. Also, they put too much faith in us.
They assumed that if Americans evidenced the "justices" destroying our Democracy, we would, at least, impeach them. We few have the will to do this. The majority are too busy with Casey Anthony, Lady Gaga, Weiners wiener..., until the majority break their shackles, we are screwed.

Thank Cenk.

17. Ironically, the Constitution does not say they get appointments for life.
You know who decided that the Constitution meant Justices get appointments for life? The Supreme Court decided that.

10. the supremes
So true, Cenk. Ever since we (as a nation, including Mr. Gore and the rest of the Dems) sat back and accepted Bush vs Gore, I had the sinking feeling that things could only get worse. At the time, there were rumors that the Repugs anticipated that things might shake out the other way in the voting and were all set to fight down and dirty to the bitter end, rather than give in as the Democrats did.

11. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of this law either...
...as it increases costs on the taxpayer to match what businesses provide. Suppose McCain had to be provided taxpayer dollars to match Obama's fundraising.

I am a proponent of no private financing at all. I'd rather there was a pool of taxpayer political funds that are split among candidates. That way campaign outcomes wouldn't be based upon how much money a candidate has, rather based on issues (theoretically).

12. It saves money

Corporations don't donate money out of the goodness of their hearts. They want a return. Guess who pays for that.

Returns of 100:1 are not unheard of. A corporation can donate $1 million to a candidate and get a $100 million tax break. Guess who pays for that.

Public financing or matching funds SAVE billions of dollars in the long run.

23. I agree that public financing would save money...
...but I think that matching would be an issue. Whether the Republican or the Democrat raises more money, in either case it is us taxpayers that are left to fill in the gap for the opposite party. Would you have been in favor of us paying to bridge the gap between McCain and Obama in the 2008 election?

Personally, I don't think that elections should be based on whomever can raise the most money anyway. I'd much rather both candidates have the same resources, but I don't think that the quantity of those resources should be determined by how much corporate interests deserve to give.
