In January, MainStreet.com named Grand Rapids, Michigan, 10th on its list of America's "dying cities." It's possible nobody would have ever learned about this dubious distinction, but Newsweek picked up the story on its website, giving folks living in the Midwestern city -- and nearby Detroit and Flint -- something to be bummed about in addition to massive unemployment and home foreclosures. .

To prove they're still thriving and have the same taste in classic rock as Madonna, 5,000 residents of Grand Rapids turned to the power of music and motivated to break the world record for largest lip dub on May 22nd, lip synching to Don McLean's sombre "American Pie." .

It really is very cool to see a city come together and do something to show that the rumors of their demise are premature. For $40,000 (donated by sponsors), they were able to come up with a great display of their city and the people, and suddenly I have an urge to go check it out for myself.

1. Those "sponsors" is probably Amway.
I don't go to Grand Rapids unless one of
my cousins gets married, or someone dies.

That part of the state has been on the take
since I can remember.

2. Yeah, it still had the DeVos name plastered on the credits
Sorry, but when you live in a place dominated by the Dutch Mafia, it gets a little tiresome. The building I work in is named after DeVos and there are 5 buildings within a block of here named after DeVos or VanAndel. :puke:

I just wish they didn't feel the need to see their names EVERYWHERE. There are a couple other families just as generous who go out of their way to either be anonymous or don't want something named after them.

One other thing I noticed--it looks like we have about 3 African Americans in Grand Rapids and even less Hispanics. Sigh. :)
