1. Mike is great but...
Mike is 100% on about the teachings of Jesus and the distortions of those teachings (another great perspective on this is Mark Twains essay "The War Prayer"), but you can't celebrate the teachings and ignore what he said about himself: that he was the son of God. It doesn't diminish what he was trying to do at all, because he did come here in the flesh.

My wife and I have had to search long and hard to find a church that didn't teach that Christianity=the republican party and the pastor has recently hammered the republicans in a big way. The church has bought a building that used to be a small hospital to provide transitional housing for the poor.

One thing that has frustrated me is that most churches will run a Memorial Day service.
Why is this frustrating?
1. They will say those in the military died to "give us freedom" yet this denies what it states in the Declaration of Independence that these are God given freedoms.
2. They say exactly NOTHING on Labor Day about the people that died to gain our God given freedoms in the workplace.

There are two books I would suggest for Mike or others, the first is "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell, who tried to disprove Christianity. The next is "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis, because if Christianity is true, then of course evil will try to distort it by joining in to change the message. Thus we get megachurches where those who can't afford to pay their utilities give money in a 7 million dollar building to a pastor who lives in a 3 million dollar home.

2. Christ and Conscience are synonymous…
Who ever authored the story of Christ new something good existed within the human psyche… Of course, the science of psychology did not exist, and there were no words to describe the altruistic compassion and caring that most people were, and are, capable of experiencing. Psychologist call this word Conscience…

Thanks to institutionalized religion, I am not religious, but I guess I could be considered agnostic. Decades ago I read the bible many times and studied the message of Christ intensely. Having radically different interpretations than do the wolves who run their for profit scams called churches, I know it’s not important whether you believe the caricature “Jesus” existed or not. I also know churches take advantage of people who suffer from what I like to call the “Santa Clause Syndrome”, because believing what right wingers believe requires the same mental processes to believe in Santa Clause. Most people grow up and develop some form of critical thinking skills, unfortunately Right Wing extremist are a little slow in this area which makes them highly delusional and somewhat psychotic conservatives. (I’m sorry if this offends you Santa Clause but some things just have to be said…)

What is important within the story of Christ is the consistent message of conscience, it is written as if someone is trying to explain to people that conscience exist by telling the story about a man named Jesus. And Jesus said things that conscience tells those who have one all the time, such as, treat others the way you would want to be treated, being your brother’s keeper, be the Good Samaritan, helping the poor and sick, not being greedy, not going to war etc… These are the things that that inner voice called conscience tells liberals and progressives all the time, and they don’t have to be religious to feel, know, and do the right thing.

Moreover, when we see church leaders and politicians doing and saying things that are obviously anti conscience, if not outright evil, we could say from a religious perspective, these people are “Anti Christ” because they are, in fact, “Anti Conscience”. And when people of conscience take the world back from the Anti Conscience Psychopaths, (aka wolves in sheep's clothing) that are wreaking so much hell in the world with their dominant influence over governments, we will call that “the return of Conscience to government”, or if your religious and prefer the ancient term for conscience go ahead and say “the return of Christ”, but the truth is the rule of Conscience is who and what we are waiting for.

3. But...
That only leaves us with a naturalistic creation. The latest hypothesis in theorectical physics sound too much like the Bible. I am more convinced than ever. Most of this is from articles in Discover magazine, but many are saying time appears to be an artificial construct, the universe seems "designed" to support life, observations affect outcomes, etc.
Currently I've been taking anatomy and physiology in preparation for a career change (I was an environmental regulatory professional, so you can guess how that was going). It is amazing the level of precision and detail the simplest reactions take. The criticism that I enjoyed (although the author's conclusions have been hotly debated) was in "Darwin's Black Box" where he discusses how many biochemical systems have "irreducible complexity" in other words, one missing piece causes the chain of reactions to fail.

I think the biggest problem Christianity has is that "Christians" have tried to tie it to the Republican party. Completely wrong. I have challenged pastors to go through the issues in the republican platform and we'll see what the bible says about them. I'll even do it with the abortion issue. The republicans fail on every issue based on biblical principles.

As soon as I'm free to start a post, I'm going to clean up and post my rant on abortion as a guide to debating with the right wingers. I think the first thing that liberals and progressives should do is take away the "pro-life" label. They are not. OK, preview...

They only want to make abortion illegal. That won't work any better than making alcohol or drugs illegal. Any program or policy that actually reduces the demand for abortion, the republicans stand against. Plus an Iraqi or Afghani baby blown up in it's mothers womb is just a dead as an aborted baby, but the church still cheerleads for the wars. I'll get the full rant on here before the election...

4. If there were a God, I would have to say that, he/she/it whatever God is, created evolution.
In addition, I believe objective is how the Universe sees itself, and once you consider the processes of our senses gathering information, the filters of our biological brain etc…, and the forming of a picture (within the orb of thought) which we call reality; at best we see things subjectively…

Whatever the truth may be, I learned long ago to not torture myself with infinite possibilities of what might be or might not be. I am a man and my driven task is to learn the ways and deprivations of mans psyche not Gods. Although, because of certain experiences, I can’t dismiss certain beliefs, maybe I don’t want to subconsciously and therefore I can’t…

One thing for certain is that there is a battle here on earth, and it’s between those who have a conscience and those who don’t. It’s a physical problem that exist whether God does or doesn’t. Intelligent design or not, it doesn’t matter in grand scheme of things, I am here in a world to which I perceive as reality, and that’s where my purpose lay. The more important illusions the world has to deal with comes from psychopaths, not gods…
