The holders of the Nobel peace prizes are guaranteed to make headline news but over the years the recipients have become the center of media attentions for all the wrong reasons.

There are still those who are wondering why Barak Obama won the award when he was holding the office only for 11 days as the US president.

This edition of The Agenda asks: has the Nobel peace prize become politicized and devalued?

1. Henry. Kissinger. This question is about 40 years too late.
It's a useful prize when it singles out small orgs or unknown leaders of good causes, because they can use the publicity. It's a joke when the jury instead tries to play realpolitik on the grand stage and turn themselves into tools, like with Obama (as just the latest of many examples).

Quick, how many people, without looking, can describe correctly the body that awards the annual Nobel Peace Prize?

4. I can describe it
But i'm Norwegian.

I think the background and history of the Nobel peace prize needs to be taken into account. The reason its handed out in Norway in the first place and not Sweden, is because when Alfred Nobel lived Norway was under Sweden. We did not have our own foreign policy, and hence we could be considered neutral.

The nobel peace prize is often used as a tool to add pressure for change and peace. And in this case, it was to put pressure on Obama to do what he said he would do about nuclear weapons. It is not the fault of the Nobel Comitee that the workings of the US government are so institutionalized that no matter who's in charge, the empire just keeps expanding. In fact, it has nothing to do with this what so ever. The prize was given for the vision of a nuclear weapon free world by a newly elected president.

I still don't agree with the award, but i think people have lost the plot completely as to WHY it was awarded to him.

5. On the other hand
giving out the Nobel Peace Prize to the man who industrialized the practice of suicide bombing can't be excused in any way

2. All the Nobel Prizes have a political aspect to them because they require a vote.
The Peace Prize it by far the most political.
