2. Lesson: If you live in an earthquake prone area, pay close attention to your pet's
behavior! I was visiting a friend's farm in Ohio when an earthquake hit in the 80's. All of the barnyard animals became very agitated and noisy minutes before the ground shook.

I mean, I'd do the same thing if I had enough hands, but damn, that shaking went on for a LONG time - just unbelievable.

Poor cat, just crying and crying.

19. As embarrassed as I am to admit this
Saving the TV is my 'plan A'... and I still have one of those big-ass, heavy CRT sets. I have neighbors downstairs I have to think of after all.

7. When I asked my mom if she heard about the quake, she asked me "Don't they have animals in Japan?"
When they go crazy take it as a sign. Remind myself to do that after Katrina happened. The only animals they found dead were the ones that were left behind or couldn't get out of captivity sadly.

13. Wrong.
They hear sound frequencies we can't, and they can feel pressure changes we tend to ignore. My can't doesn't like storms. He feels them coming and gets clingy. When he uses claws to stay on my lap, I check the weather report.

17. I can feel storms, too
it's called arthritis, and I'm eat up with it. I can usually feel one the day before it arrives, at least.

Storms aren't earthquakes. There's no scientific evidence of animals' being earthquake detectors. To get anecdotal about this, none of our animals has ever reacted to any of the multiple earthquakes we've had over the last few years. They freak out in the middle of the quake, though.

25. Animals can detect them....
They just can't express it a way we can understand sometimes. Calm horses get skittish, chickens cluck a lot and then get silent. During the quake and tsunami that hit Thailand, the elephants were seen going to higher ground (none were killed) well before the waves hit. Animals hear at frequencies that we cannot (elephants call to each other over great distances in low frequencies and dolphins and bats use sonar to triangulate prey). Birds are sensitive to changes in the magnetic field (their homing device). Some dogs can sense seizures in humans and are used as warning devices. Just because you can't sense it or understand an animal's behavior doesn't mean they are not indicators.

Literature is full of documented animal behavior and earthquakes going as far back as ancient China (crickets suddenly went silent just prior). Just like you can feel the atmospheric pressure change in your bones, they can feel other changes. I grew up in tornado country and I can smell a tornado before it is even in the sky (just ask hubby).

We may not know the particulars but it is a gift that can be used for survival, if we use it.

20. Not true. Animals can hear things we cannot hear. It was the animals
in Indonesia who probably saved the lives of some of the local people. Many of them were agitate and began running to high ground way before the Tsunami hit, and local people who knew that they were acting strangely, decided to follow them. Those people were safe when the Tsunami came.

Many, many people reported how differently the animals were acting before it came. Its not a mystery, they are far closer to nature still than we are and their have the ability to hear things we cannot hear. Sort of like putting your ear on the RR track to see if a train is coming.

15. We can learn a lot from animals
I think those people should have gotten out of the house, though, instead of holding on to the TV. Poor kitty was crying the whole time. :(

Earthquakes are so terrifying....

24. Republican Budget Cuts for Tsunami Warning Centers
__________
GOP Budget Cuts Would Lead to Furloughs at Tsunami Warning Centers, Undermining Their "Ability to React"
by: Kevin Donohoe
Saturday 12 March 2011

Congressional Republicans' 2011 budget would slash funding for government agencies directly responsible for issuing tsunami warnings and severely reduce the government’s capacity to track and respond to these disasters, the president of the union that represents employees of the National Weather Service told ThinkProgress today in the wake of the tragic tsunami in the Pacific. The House Republican budget, which was rejected by the Senate this week, would have cut funding to NOAA - the agency directly responsible for tsunami monitoring and warning - restricting the government’s ability to respond.

Dan Sobien, the president of National Weather Service Employees Organization, said in a statement to ThinkProgress that while his agency, a subsidiary of NOAA, has made contingency plans, the GOP cuts would "put considerable stress" on the country’s tsunami monitoring and response systems:

NOAA has put together part of a contingency plan to handle such a massive cut and while it spares tsunami buoys, all other coastal buoys are non funded and there will be furloughs at both Tsunami Warning Centers (TWC). These furloughs will take away the TWC’s ability to upgrade tsunami models and will put considerable stress on watchstanders ability to react. This plan unfortunately only account for about half the cuts that need to be made, about 60 of the 126 million that needs to be cut. While today's disaster is of particular concern to everyone, we are just now entering tornado season and soon will be hurricane season and our organization firmly believes any effort to defund and dismantle our nations early warning system for all disasters is very unwise.

27. It was okay, as far as the video shows. It's making the
"I'm, frightened/lonely/looking for kittens or mother cat" call from start to finish. No pain noises. The cat would know to run hide somewhere safe.
