1. The questioner was disrespectful
and apparently has no manners. I don't like McCain, but acting like a brat doesn't help your cause.

2. While I am no McCain fan, I have to admit that made me laugh...
the questioner asked a pertinent question in a tacky way and got what he deserved.

9. I thought it was hysterical, myself. And you can be sure I am no McCain fan
but I have to say that was the most authentic I've seen him since that sweaty Bush Bear Hug.

I got a real kick out of it!

"One of my kids said pretty soon I'll be hiding my own Easter eggs". That's the McCain I remember from about seven years ago.

6. I thought the kid was just being honest
When you consider that Ronald Reagan was showing signs of Alzheimer's during his terms in office, you must also consider that there are many types of health problems that could affect a president's judgement and/or ability to govern. Not everyone is as fortunate as Jimmy Carter, who is still sharp as a tack and in relatively good health. The vast majority of people, as they age, do start to have health problems which can interfere with their everyday lives.

If anything, it was McCain who displayed brattiness by being so snotty with his answer. If he were truly older and wiser, he would have been mature enough to answer the question and get on with it.

15. honest or just rude?
"you're so old; aren't you afraid of getting Alzheimer's and dying while in office?"--that's just rude. The kid, who obviously doesn't like McCain and would never vote for him, was just being a jerk. Respect for one's elders seems to have fallen away among many of our youth. Nobody says you have to like McCain, but that isn't some warrant to act like an idiot. If you want to make a point, make a point. It doesn't have to be made in an insulting manner.

20. Honest and rude are not mutually-exclusive.
Edited on Wed Sep-05-07 01:51 PM by lumberjack_jeff
I'm sure he was being honest in expressing his concerns that an old-timer like McCain might "die in office or get, like, alzheimers n'stuff"

It is still rude.

14. McCain's response followed the Alzheimer/death question
not before. Your logic is off. The kid shouldn't respect McCain because his disrespectful question was treated with a sarcastic answer?

26. Lighten up...
He may be a panderererererer.....

But that was clearly a joke of a period on an answer to a question that probably should/could not have been asked. The kid had a right to ask it, and McCain answered it with grace - punctuated by a little humor.

And BTW... I think the question was only slightly disrespectful.

McCain is a jerk but not in this instance.

3. The video helped
I had an image of McCain's completely losing it. His coda to his answer to the kid might have included a nasty barb, but his overall response wasn't nearly as nasty as I thought it would be.

12. Haven't watched it yet, but a first impression is to ask if the kid was
with his parents - would McCain have said what he did if the parents were right beside him? If not, it was disrespectful. There is an age factor here and the fact that his parents would have been seen as being voters. Having another story about him also causes him to lose face.

I'll be watching now and like the others might not think it was so bad, but aspects of it are without watching.

He's demented...

He's totally PTSD'd out...

It was a very valid question and should also be asked by the M$M...

Oh, and that prick mccain sure showed a lot of class and sensitivity with that "jerk" remark.

I'm afraid that my neighbors here in Arizona will vote that wackjob piece of shit back into the Senate again though -- republicans are sure fucking stupid...

Wait a second...then what the fuck am I still doing here??

Sorry I couldn't resist.

Yea sadly even here in "liberal" Tucson the whackjob parade is in full force and of course the only counter balance to these yahoos are the non-natives that live here mostly from the midwest and NYC (My REAL home) Sure lots of people from Cali out here too but I still have yet to see too many beyond the Orange County silver spoon types. No offense just calling it like I see it.

good humor.

I am a college English teacher. I can't tell you how much less fun the classroom has become since we can no longer banter playfully with our students for fear someone will take offense at an inoffensive comment obviously meant jokingly. I am not talking about patently offensive comments, either. I don't find McCain's comment offensive at all, but it is obvious that some humorless people would, so I would never say something like that. But even the mildest humor offends someone, and so it becomes harder and harder to lighten the tone of a classroom by being playful and energetic when teaching.

For example, I am profoundly hearing-impaired. I wear hearing aids, but they don't provide the sort of wonderful correction that most people get with glasses. In order to help my students understand the limitations on my hearing, even with hearing aids, I tell them that my hearing aids help me hear about as well as their great-grandmother's walker helps her jog.

Believe it or not, one student a few semesters ago actually complained that I was mocking the handicapped, and that she didn't appreciate my joking at the expense of people who use walkers.

BTW, I use a cane and park in handicapped spots myself, so along with the deafness, I think that I am actually part of the demographic that she was leaping to protect from old meanies like me.

On my I'm Listening as Hard as I Can! website (http://www.deafnotdumb.homestead.com/index.html), where I post mostly humorous articles about coping with deafness in a society where deaf people are treated as nuisances--and as idiots--I have an article entitled "Deaf People Are So Annoying!" (http://www.deafnotdumb.homestead.com/deafannoy.html). It is about the attitudes that most "hearies" have towards those of us who don't have normal hearing. One teenager left this furious comment in the guest book of that article:
YOU MIGHT THINK DEAF PEOPLE ARE ANNOYING BUT I HAVE A DEAF BROTHER AND I HAVE LIVED WITH HIM ALL MY LIFE I AM 14 AND NOT ONCE I HAVE FOUND HES ANNOYING SO GO MAKE FUN OF OTHER PEOPLE OR AT LEAST GROW UP AND FIND SUMTHIN BETTER TO DO THAT PICK ON PEOPLE SO FUCK U
Obviously she didn't read past the title, since my first paragraph explains that I am deaf, and that two of my sisters are deaf, and our mother and grandmother--and most of Grandma's sisters plus one of her brothers--were also deaf. But quite apart from the issue of "Is our children learning? (She obviously was no reader!) it seems evident that she came in with a chip on her shoulder, ready, nay eager, to be offended on behalf of her deaf brother.

Similarly, I think anyone who finds McCain's obviously humorus, good-natured comment insulting and offensive is a humorless stick.

And I can't stand McCain.

Unreal.

College students, in general, are not very bright anymore.

23. Ah, a glimmer of how McCain used to be...
There was nothing offensive about this. It was a humorous response to a snotty question, and if you were offended by this...well...get over yourself. I doubt the person who asked the question was offended...in fact, McCain kept his cool really well.
He used to be one of the good republicans. I felt bad for him when Bush and Rove thoroughly screwed him in 2000. Then he sold his soul for something...opportunity? I don't know. He became one of the most sickening toadies, as low as Lieberman.
It was nice to see a bit of levity out of him.

28. Exactly.
Sure, it reveals some truth about the man. And I'd rather see that than somebody like Romney who doesn't have a genuine cell in his body. I'd like to see more of these unscripted human interactions.

I've always likes and empathized with McCain. I believe he is genuine. I don't agree with his positions very often, but I respect him more than anybody else on the GOP stage other than Ron Paul.

I used to respect him a bit until he sold his soul for some reason to the bush administration, and became a "loyal bushie", but that exchange was just plain funny. Both the question (which was maybe a little bit rude), and the response. I can take a joke, some people apparently can't.

Where some other 'sites' will unleash venom and abject derision without heed for context, it's nice to see a 'fair and balanced' commentary from what the RW noise machine considers 'the far left'.

No, McCain was just being a guy. I might have put it differently, but I sure would have 'put it'. :)
