It's pretty clear to a lot of us that raising the retirement age is a serious proposal that will be offered by President Obama's 18 member deficit commission. Already Steny Hoyer and John Boehner have said they would support raising the retirement age. Time to fight back!

1. certainly you do not think the upper earners should pay more . . . do you?
I also think that proposal is coming . . . and will be supported by both congress and the administration.

4. Are you suggesting raising the cap on contributions for FICA? Great idea!
However, any type of means testing will severely undermine the program.

6. I sure hope so! Any changes to improve the solvency of Social Security
I believe, must minimize harm and not cut the very modest benefits it already provides. The thing that worries me is that very few representatives in Congress, with the exception of very progressive members, have supported raising the cap on taxable income for SS. We'll see what happens...

8. they know where their next contribution comes from
cannot agree with raising the age however - think that would be a mistake - but I think the commission will do it anyway

10. no it won't. That will be political suicide for anyone supporting it.
What they should do is REMOVE the income caps and make the elites pay the same 11% of their income that everyone else has to.

11. I agree 100% with you re the caps. . . however, I think an age change is coming
that is clearly why the proposed solutions are coming after the midterms.

Yes - the cap should clearly be lifted.

IN THIS CASE.... PROMISE THEM FOR 50 YEARS THAT THEY WILL GET RETIREMENT AT A CERTAIN PACE AND RATE.....

AND THEN BREAK THE PROMISE BY EITHER HOLDING BACK COST-OF-LIVING MONEY.... OR CAUSE RUNAWAY INFLATION.... OR CHANGING THE AGE TO 70.....

Edited on Tue Oct-12-10 12:36 PM by rocktivity
Eliminate it altogether, and EVERYONE can pay a lower rate.

7. Good idea! Unemployment isn't high enough!
Let's raise the SS eligibility age and keep everyone in the labor pool for a few more years.

This will work especially well for heavy labor jobs like construction, mining, etc. I know I'll feel better knowing that those 65 year-old roustabouts in the oil fields don't get to slack off quite so soon.

9. More people vying for jobs means
higher unemployment and lower pay as employers have a larger pool to select labor at the lowest price.
Wall Street must be salivating.
