New:
Oval Rug with presidential seal (donated, made with 25% recycled wool)
Desk Chair
Sofas and lamps and wallpaper and coffee table (made in the USA)
Reupholstered chairs (in leather) in front of fireplace

President Obama selected the following five historical quotes for the rug border:
“The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fear Itself” – President Franklin D. Roosevelt
“The Arc of the Moral Universe is Long, But it Bends Towards Justice” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Government of the People, By the People, For the People” – President Abraham Lincoln
“No Problem of Human Destiny is Beyond Human Beings” – President John F. Kennedy
“The Welfare of Each of Us is Dependent Fundamentally Upon the Welfare of All of Us” – President Theodore Roosevelt

p.s. Taxpayer money was NOT used.
Money that Obama gave to the White House Historical Foundation left over from his 2008 campaign was used for the remodel.

3. I hope it's nice and soft
so that when he falls off the couch after drinking too much Jack Daniel's and choking on a pretzel, he won't get rug burns.

7. He's finally getting rid of Dubya's rug, eh? Good on him.
And I approve of all the quotes. Those are great men he's sitting in the shadow of.

9. Could you make this any more boring?
Okay, maybe it is just me, but does the oval office look like one would look "before" a make over? Just about everything looks mediocre at best. Shouldn't the POTUS have an amazing office? I guess that the word that comes to mind is extremely underwhelming.

11. RUG Border Quote CONTROVERSY
Edited on Sat Sep-04-10 07:44 PM by Tx4obama
Read about the quote controversy here:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/09/04/oval-office-rug-wrongly-attributes-quote-to-mlk/#more-120670

-------------------
THEODORE PARKER (1850s): "I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends towards justice."

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR: “The Arc of the Moral Universe is Long, But it Bends Towards Justice”

Dr. King paraphrased the quote and made it more modern and succinct.

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with attributing the shorter quote to MLK.

12. Uh oh perhaps TWO controversies in the makin'
Apparently there's gonna be some controversy over the LINCOLN quote too.
-----

Excerpt below from the end of Washington Post article:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/03/AR2010090305100.html

The familiar quote from Lincoln woven into Obama's rug is "government of the people, by the people and for the people," the well-known utterance from the close of his Gettysburg Address in 1863.

Funny that in 1850, Parker wrote, "A democracy -- that is a government of all the people, by all the people, for all the people."
