1. NEW WAR ??? What is she ...Bushes sister? OMG I am not voting for her!
It's obvious that she plans to continue the illegal Iraq war. Well she voted for the war so I guess it makes sense that she thinks she could do a better job of mass murder. Maybe she can get her daughter to enlist and go help kill a few babies and mothers along with all our other baby killers.

3. I'd like to know what she meant by "new war."
I wish the clip continued for a moment longer. It certainly sounds bad.

5. she's referring to the idea that the "war" against transnational
terrorism is not going to be fought the same way a conventional war would be.

Even if you accept the idea that Iraq was a player in international terrorism (an absurdity), going in and toppling a government, then occupying a country is not the way to go about fighting terrorism. That, IMO, is what she's saying - that any "war" against terrorism will be fought differently, using different tools - more of a law enforcement action than a military one.

This idea has been expressed by other Democrats - Kerry used it in the last election.

6. If that's it, then this isn't particularly problematic.
In general, soundbites are unhelpful to political discourse. But "zingers" are always popular.

8. I agree with you. I generally post things without comment...
and I think this video, as presented, deserves thought before conclusions are made.

4. Umm ...
Out of context videos aren't very helpful.

My vote is rather important to me.
A small, couple second long video clip with beginning and end missing is not good.

I shudder to think of what I may sound like with my words taken out of context.

This is Democratic Underground -- let's not give the other side ammo for free.

On the topic...
It seems logical that adding more troops would have an impact. On a purely numbers basis, there are some bright spots -- which this administration has touted as bright regions. But, those small successes are clearly overshadowed by a lot of disaster. Hillary is simply taking some wind out of their sails here, and making this topic her own.

As for the "new war" ...
Again, I don't particularly like that this clip ends there. I'd like to see it all before making any comments about that. Let's be realistic -- no politician in their right mind would talk about getting into a new war. This war is incredibly unpopular. If I had to guess, I would imagine she was talking about the struggles we face in getting out of Iraq; which are great. If you think of a group of people, surrounded by people with guns, you have to be very careful about how you get them out of the enclosed space. I know everyone wants to say "just leave" -- but our troops can't just all start flying away at once. There's necessary strategy required; a strategy this administration refuses to even plan.

Thanks!

13. Hillary is a hawk and this only confirms it
She has supported Bush in the Iraq War all the way and what will haunt her is clips of her advocating the war

16. It blows my mind that there are Dems who support her.
Edited on Tue Aug-21-07 06:42 PM by D23MIURG23
I'm sure that will offend some people, but for reason's sake, what exactly is she talking about?! New war? Surge is working? Is she saying we have to get it right next time when we invade Iran? Or is it just that war is now peace, and we have always been (and will always be) at war with terror? I know there are a lot of people who would like us to have our first woman president, but do you really want her to be a jingoistic DINO who regurgitates republican talking points on command?

Screw electability (if that is even the right word). I'm voting for Kucinich.

18. Maybe they did make military progress with the surge
Its possible. Carl Levin just said they did and I know he doesn't lie to support the Bushies. Maybe Hillary is saying it because its true.

19. Yes, true in a limited and disingenuous sense.
To loosely paraphrase Bill Maher, reducing violence through the same sense mechanism having an officer on the front porch stops Daddy from hitting Mommy. However it does nothing about any of the underlying problems, and falls well short of what would actually be needed to pacify the country. Personally I'm not really impressed with that sort of "Millitary Progress" and I wish the Dems wouldn't lend it credibility.

20. I agree with you about the cop on the porch
Here's more about what Hillary said.

AP) New military tactics in Iraq are working but the best way to honor U.S. soldiers is "by beginning to bring them home," Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton told war veterans Monday.

Clinton, seeking the Democratic nomination for president, praised the work that soldiers have done in Iraq but described the government there as "on vacation," leaving American troops in the middle of a sectarian war.
