| 1. Just another case for regulation |
|
I am 100% opposed to porn, but it seems that this Dan Gainor is going to extremes. For the case of argument lets say that he is correct that this is obscene, the answer is regulation. Why is the right so opposed to regulating the business world, while having no problem regulating private citizens? I know their arguments that it should be left to a voluntary basic for businesses, but that just doesn't work. As a Christian and a former conservative let me say that if volunteerism would work, there never would have been a need for the Ten Commandments.

It keeps perverts off the streets. It is 100% up to the individual to watch/participate if wanted and 100% up to the individual to tune out if not wanted.
There is no need for the 10 commandments. Most of them are rules that people in most societies follow anyway to remain free. But ones like 'keep the sabbath' and 'no idols' are designed to keep the masses subordinate to some ruling religious class.

| 3. Amusing Ourselves to Death |
|
Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions". In 1984, Huxley added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we hate will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us.

| 4. The overclass had a debate about whose methods were preferable, and Orwell won. |
|
The slime who rule us are firm in their determination to seize our goods, our homes, and our money, and to subject us to whatever painful existences they may devise for us. All pleasure will be reserved for the privileged.
