47. I don't watch Fox so had no idea -- and no one at DU ever commented on it, either . . .
at least that I've seen.

And, we do have Fox viewers here who watch mainly to stay informed of the

nonsense they pull!

till they get a repub retard back in power.
Nothing more than a teabagger, hate Obama, racist channel .
It's too bad, with all those viewers a positive message could really change
the the way people could unite, but alas, we have the great division , very sad.

Fox isn't there to be happy. They're there to keep right wingers pissed off and constantly remind them who their enemy is. Right wing movements work best when you can keep people angry and give them and enemy to rally against.

Fox will never put out a positive message because if they did they'd lose their audience. If they wanted a positive message they'd be watching some other channel, but they don't, so they watch Fox.

53. Schultz was then trying to please both the left and the right on his radio show....
Edited on Tue Apr-20-10 01:05 PM by LaPera
But Schultz gained more popularity from the left, for even offering the left any kind of a desperately needed national radio voice....The change at first was moderately to the left and then faster & faster, until as now Ed is a full-blown, no apology true compassionate passionate progressive and Schultz has a large loyal progressive audience, (on both radio & TV).

If anything before Ed's evolution Ed did seem to leaned to the right, but Ed the saw clearly the obvious imbalance, the outright lies, the hate, and the greed of the republicans, and the republicans favor of corporations over the workers, that's when he really started to change, first gradually, then whoa, passionately a progressive/liberal to where he's is today....FIERY!

I love Ed today and I NEVER miss his MSNBC TV show each day (I recorded it - DVR)

One thing I must say in protection of ED is that even in the beginning at his most moderate and right leaning, five or more years ago....Ed was always a strong supporter of Unions! Unions the only united voice for workers.

8. This kind of information needs to be force-fed the tea baggers and conservatives
Edited on Tue Apr-20-10 01:24 AM by gtar100
who swallow the horse shit from Fox and the many Christian broadcasting networks. Strap them into a chair and make them listen to progressive radio stations for at least one week and their wall of stupidity will probably develop a few holes. If they stay away from Fox and Christian broadcasting long enough, they just may develop some sanity again. They are like junkies and Fox is their fix. They need to go cold-turkey; they need to be fed the voices that use critical thinking and thought-provoking arguments that examine the information not for political advantage but for understanding and finding workable solutions.

THERE IS A FALSE EQUIVALENCE BEING TOUTED BY THE CONSERVATIVES THAT THE LEFT IS THE SAME AS THE RIGHT. OPPOSITE BUT EQUAL.

BULLSHIT.

The Left and Right are really bad labels for the reality of this situation. There is the small, narrow mind of the conservative and there is the open mind of the liberal that is willing to look at facts and evidence, and acknowledge truth even in the limited cases where conservatism is correct. They think it's about winning, we think it's about finding the best solutions. These are not opposites. The conservatism they espouse is a small subset of a much larger information field. But they can't see it because their minds are small, they're views are limited. They are driven by ego and fear towards a belief they are right. They do not have a respect for the truth, for facts that can and often do contradict their beliefs.

The diversity of humanity and life in general confuses them because it challenges their customs and traditions to which they cling for security. With the floodgates of information opened by the Internet, I guess it's no wonder they've gone off the deep end. They look and act like a bunch of fools and they're too insulated to realize it because they are feeding off of each other in a closed loop. They only see contradiction when they look at us; they don't see the bigger picture that we can see around them and us. They are a small, very small, segment in a vast world of multiplicity that none of us could claim to have a complete grasp of. But opposites we are not.

27. While I strongly disagree with tea baggers and conservatives,
the notion of force-feeding them progressive material troubles me deeply. First off, it sounds much too close to indoctrination, possibly even brainwashing. I can't subscribe to that, no matter how wrong-headed I believe these people to be. Second, it wouldn't work. You mention this in your paragraph concerning the "Left" and "Right"...the mind has to be at least a little bit open in order to accept the message. These people have demonstrated closed-mindedness time and again. Finally, I suspect that many if not most of them simply lack the intelligence to understand. I don't want to sell them short or paint with too broad a brush, but the overall picture they present is one of severely challenged intellects. Sadly, in this country we seem to have a constitutional right to be stupid.

86. Don't even need to force feed them "progressive media".
Just give them a TV full of international broadcasters. A non stop diet of BBC World, CBC, DW, France 24, and heck yes even Aljazeera English and CCTV 9.

Then they will get to see how the rest of the world views America and they can hang their head in shame. At least we are going in the right direction now (somewhat) ...

59. It seems to me...
that the RE imposing the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE would definitely let us know where "news" ended and opinion started. That is one of the main goals of this doctrine. It was mandated by the FCC near the beginning of broadcast journalism. It was mandated for this reason; so that Americans would know when they were hearing facts and when they were hearing opinion(propaganda). WE OWN THE AIRWAVES. Another great part of this mandate is that commentators with an opinion (all of them on fox) must give FREE air-time (public service) to people with differing points of view. It only makes sense. The FAIRNESS DOCTRINE served us well until ronnie reagan decided that "the free market should determine the content of news programs." Now, the Florida Supreme Court has decided that "news" programs do not have to truthful!! David Swanson replied to me that the Fairness Doctrine, in his opinion, would not be helpful. He said it "was a step in the right direction." If something is "a step in the right direction", how can it not be "helpful?"
To me this is just like RE regulating banksters. They were regulated after they destroyed our economy with THE GREAT DEPRESSION. After ronny reagan decided that a free market place was what America needed, the regulations kept getting less and less...until there was no regulation on this "casino-capitalism." So, the wealth got redistributed to the already wealthy and the middle class was destroyed. Now when we want to RE regulate the banksters, so the middle class stands a chance, the fox led teahadists go crazier. We are just trying to restore what protections we already had.... redistribute the wealth? SOCIALISM...The wealth was already redistributed upwards... we're just trying to get back to where we were before there was no middles class. The teahadists led by the millionaire repubs are INSANELY GREEDY....we should be considered "conservatives" ...we are trying to return our economy and media to the way it used to be...when it halfassed worked.

82. I think we need an Ownership Doctrine as much as a News/Opinion Doctrine
No more than 30% of a region's media can be owned by one person- that should be re-imposed. The ONLY time there should be more than 30% ownership is when there's only 2 stations. We're seeing less than positive aspects of ownership. Why so many right-wing stations? It's not exactly a money-making format. Those stations are propped up by special interest groups and pro-greed corporate sponsors to flood the airwaves with crap.

Also, there should be a deliniation between news organizations, bloggers, and opinion/propaganda media. In other words, only news agencies should be allowed to have valid press credentials. That means FOX would not get press passes to important events- which would force them back into the News world and out of the propaganda business.

.....sit and watch fox news in their scivies in their living room all day long. I mean ONLY FOX!!! They both graduated from college in the early 70's, stunning they were both hippies but can't stand Obama...What happened to LOVE and PEACE???

Oh...not only that, they are afraid to use a computer....totally against even trying!!???

My point is...the Obama generation is computor savvy. We get our info from underground sources like DU. It is technology and youngsters that brought Obama to us. I'm 63-years old have kids and see he is our future. Just a note: I have kids and brother and Sister-in-law have none.

I boils down to this....Fox News markets to the stupid (the no common sense stupid). Ed is right about FAUX. He did a great job, but who listens to him from the other side? Not many!!

I hope liberal media finds a way to inform these types. Obama is smart: Since Fox seems to be on the edge of treason using dis-information and propaganda. Obama seems cool about it all. Maybe there is a plan to fight back that we are unaware of...man, George Bush really set the tone for criminals in this country...just talking...

87. Since they REFUSED to protest Bush for the same things they pretend to be upset about...
...I think a logical person can conclude that Obama's race might be a factor.

When the white guy gave their money to corporations, they approved.

When the white guy was secretive, they approved.

When the white guy broke promises, they sat in silence.

But- Ohhhh- when "that Black man" did it- only then did they cry "I want my country back!!!"

Sorry, but tea-bag hypocrisy leaves me no choice but to assume that race is indeed a factor...

these teabaggers are racists. They're in my family. You should hear what they say in private, but you won't hear it said in public.

Many, not all, are racists on a varying scale from really racist to mildly....but a Black man as President of the US has absolutely stunned the hell out of a lot of primarily Southern folks.

Now go away.

And the Black dude at the tea party? He's paid to be there.

I have no doubt that some tea-partiers are not racists; they are upset about government actions and that is their right. But they are a minority, and i suspect, they're pulling away from the lunatics that have taken over the movement.

The non-racists 'tea-partiers' would be more comfortable at the 'coffee-party.' That's a more level-headed intelligent movement that's pursuing change peacefully and constructively.

50. So let me guess, it's about the spending.
If that were true how come there was no tea-bagging party before Obama was sworn in? See that's the problem, the tea-baggers had plenty of reason to be mad during the Bush years but they weren't. They only got mad when it became apparent the people were going to throw their beloved Republican party out on their asses. So why are they so mad? To tell the truth I don't care what the tea-baggers are mad about. The people voted and they lost. Tea-baggers need to shut the fuck up.

54. Sorry dude, it's largely about race
A recent article about the Oathkeepers pointed out that one of their prominent members said he understood that most of the anti Bill of Rights stuff happened under Bush, but now it's a problem only because Obama is President. Take a look at some examples of things the Republicans proposed (like pay as you go and a bipartisan budget summit) that they immediately trashed when Obama called them good ideas. Listen to the teabaggers at their rallies complain about Obama and the budget, when the real budget busting occurred under his predecessor. Check out some of the signs carried at those very rallies, depicting our legally elected President with bones through his nose, toothbrush mustache, swastikas, hammers and sickles, etc., etc. Note that the Health Care Bill is extremely similar to what Romney did in Massachusetts, yet nobody is calling for Romney's death.

The scary black man with the funny name is President. He won legally and decisively. The Republicans, teabaggers and other idiots need to get over it.

Edited on Tue Apr-20-10 03:28 PM by SemperEadem
these teabaggers---just how frequently and loudly were they marching on the capitol and the congress, with their guns strapped to their side, their misspelled signs held high and proud for the cameras, resplendent with psychotic rhetoric on full display back in 2005 when this economic shit first started unraveling? See, I was here in DC during that time. I didn't see not one protest against bush and the policies he enacted, which put us all right where we find ourselves, by anything that aligns itself with a "tea party" movement. Not one of them showed up when bush signed their money away to bail out Wall Street. I saw Liberals and Progressives who were cordoned off in the "free speech zones", which I can assure you was no where near where the teabaggers are allowed to protest while carrying firearms.

The teabaggers didn't complain when bush cut taxes on the wealthy, funded 2 wars, instituted NCLB and a no-choice medicare prescription plan without paying for either of them. Not a peep.

Obama has been spending the last 15 months digging this country out of a freakin' ditch that was dug by the policies of the bush administrations for the convenience and profit of their wretched, filthy-rich, country-club caste/class, of which none of these tea-baggers are a part. You don't see the wealthy out at teabagger rallies. What you do see at their rally is an agitated box of mothballs and a few token plants so that they can point to the "colored guy" and say "see! we got nigras in the tea bagger movement".

Please! The white guy who was in office last did far worse to this country and it wasn't until Obama got serious traction leading up to and after the Dem Nat'l convention, when mcstupid's campaign was floundering right before the thug national convention, that the first wafts of this stirring started happening.

When Ron Paul was on his way to splintering the thug party away from the Libertarians through his convention was when the thugs decided that they needed something, some weapon, and that's when Sarah the Moose was tapped. And being well steeped in Alaska Separatists rhetoric herself, she was a natural to step in and begin the splintering process down here. Her shit-talking on the night she accepted the nomination told the world all we needed to know about her. Mooselini first move was to drive the separation wedge into the race to fracture the country with her bullshit about Obama "pallin' around with terrists"; that she and they were the "real Americans"; advancing the "us against them" meme.

WTF? This is the UNITED States. We are one people and one nation, bitches. A shadow government cannot be tolerated and that is exactly what the tea baggers' underlying message is about. They want to go back to a 1947 mindset where the only people whose rights count are white anglo-saxon protestant males. The Other 95% of us are here to tell them "the train ain't going in reverse. If you don't like it, you are free to leave".

I swear, if a rap artist put out a tune using the kind of rhetoric that that harpy gets away with using in front of children, the first amendment would surely be challenged all the way to SCOTUS. Reload? Reload, what, exactly? Their minds? They can't afford the ammunition because they stopped being intellectually curious a long, long time ago. All they can afford is "passive-reactionary": A BLACK MAN IS GOING TO TAKE AWAY YOUR BIBLES AND YOUR GUNS!! If all their reasoning hinges on them being a-scared, then it's time for them to pull up their big boy/big girl pants.

One can argue all day long that the teabaggers are or are not a bunch of racists, but one thing is for certain: all ARE a bunch of hypocrites. The Libertarians have never waivered from their position and beliefs, but these malcontents are glomming onto any tolerable structure that was already in place so they didn't have to spend time building up theirs.

The left/right issues would still be there, but race has elevated it well beyond where it might normally be....

66. Ed is from Virginia. He used to be a RW'er and saw the errors of his ways
I first started listening to him on the radio and his accent grated on me as well--until I realized there might be some wingnuts surfing on the dial and stop to listen cuz they think he could be one of them. (Someone said he's as bombastic as Rush, and she mistook him for Rush initially.)

Anyway, the accent isn't fake. His name's not George W Bush or anything.

62. People with even a tiny grain of brain material
are not going to admit they're racist and in fact may not even be admitting it to themselves. This may be on of the first times they have had to consider how they feel about a minority being in power. I have a question for you: What reasonable argument do they give for their position? I mean one that might be grounded in truth. You might be able to convince us that we are misjudging the teabaggers and their ilk.

43. No.
I don't think that race is the reason for most of these people. yes there are a few who believe that, but no one listens to those people. They are not just protesting President Obama, they are protesting Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid as well. Juts like the anti-war protests were about the war and not the color of his skin. But then the right would say that if you are anti-war then you must hate the troops and America. They argument doesn't hold much water just like the race argument doesn't hold much here. Let me make myself clear tho, there are those people on both sides that take it to the extreme, but they should not be portrayed as the majority.

I KNOW there are non-racists in the tea party movement. But whether you -- or they -- like it or not, the crazies have seen their opportunity to become more vocal in their hate rhetoric and they have hijacked the movement.

46. no of course not everyone is
Many are hard righties and just hate democrats..many are biggots..many listen to Faux Noise and get scared from their rhetoric of anti-government. But it seems to me most of them are simply against helping anyone who makes below 100K. They refer to them as the 'lazy people. They chant 'no free handouts' and anything that appears to them as such is socialism.

There are some in that group who are afraid of losing their medicare and SS. A small minority seems to really be concerned with the debt..which we all are in that group. Many have lost their pensions and investments and are angry about that too as they should be. But this mess didn't happen overnight so there is no instant fix. For me if the debt is so great to bring about a collapse they could always end the 2 occupations..and we see they haven't, stop giving money to Haliburton and Black Water, they haven't.

49. Not only Schultz.
The radio hosts are starting to circle their wagons on this propaganda method of spreading disinformation. Also, Randi is saying that this whole movement is racist. All the attacks on Carter, Clinton and now Obama are orchestrated by the RW, because they want the USA to be a country for white people only. This is why Reagan, Bush I and Bush II could get away with the most egregious attacks on the Constitution and the media never criticized them and Congress never investigated and charged them with treason and crimes. Thom Hartmann is pretty much saying the same things. He says Rush Limbaugh become famous and a multi-millionaire because of his constant attacks on Bill Clinton causing him to be investigated and impeached. Keep it up all of you real talk show patriots! We have to get the truth out and the Fox out.

64. fox is overrated- it starts with talk radio, which has 20x the audience and blast the
country all day long from 1000 UNCONTESTED radio stations.

fox at least has to pretend to be balanced. it may have done some promotion but the teabaggers were educated at the limbaugh hannity radio school.

fox usually has to rechew the same cud limbaugh started earlier in the day to make it acceptable. they put a smiley face on RW radio at the end of the day.
