1. IMPOSSIBLE to overstate how important this is. Do you live online
like I do? Is your world view informed by the sources you can find online? How lost would YOU be without our alternate media??

3. I've done it and
sent this to everyone, including Republican leaning assholes I know. But I also tried to convince people to support the public option. I'm not too confident that it makes a difference any longer.

6. I GUARANTEE you the FCC will do nothing
Chairman Genachowski does not want to piss off AT&T and VZ and Comcast. The national broadband plan didn't recommend imposing open access on the incumbents because of the political pressure they would have applied. This is even a hotter issue than that one.

This FCC is not going to do anything because they don't want the incumbents pissed at them.

Goodbye online free speech.

The FCC HAS TO go back to pre 2002 regulations because if not Obama's national broadband plan is over before it even started and I don't believe that's going to be allowed to stand. Currently the FCC has no regulatory authority over the internet because of a Bush era deregulation (2002) but the current democratic plan is conditioned on the FCC regulating it as a phone service.

Among others it is planning to use current taxes on your phone service (Universal Service Fund) to pay for expanding broadband into rural areas. This would be defeated in the courts if they don't take charge of the internet. So contrary to what people think today's setback is actually a road to tomorrow's victory because it will "force" the FCC to take regulatory charge of the internet, which it can do with a strike of a pen if it really wanted to.

The Obama administration does this one the same way they did all the other legislative breakthroughs so far: with a "make me do it" attitude and political rope-a-dope but determined to establish legal precedence and sure victory at the cost of a temporary setback. Very clever. My guess is that it will work and in a few years most of the country will have 100mbps service. But that's just me ;)
