Karl Rove Heckled, Called 'War Criminal' at Book Event

Former White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove was heckled and branded a 'war criminal' at a book signing in Beverly Hills, California, Monday night.

Rove, who served as senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to former President George W. Bush, was at the Saban Theater to discuss his new book, "Courage and Consequences: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight," to an audience of about 100 people who paid up to $40 to hear him.

But the audience members were unable to get their copies of the book signed after Rove was shouted down and forced to leave the stage, reported CNN affiliate KCAL-TV.

The event was heated from the onset as several anti-war protesters interrupted Rove's talk to accuse him and his administration of lying to Americans about the threat Iraq posed to the United States - and thus, taking the country into war.

1. "They came specifically to disrupt the event..."
Sounds exactly like what the teabagger scumbags have done since last summer. I guess they've reset the standards of decorum at public events. When you don't like the speaker or what's being said, just scream out and raise hell.

9. Plus, it's a stunt that's meant to try and shake everyone out of their collective amnesia
of what happened. It was an illegal invasion of a sovereign country which led to over 1,000,000 dead human beings, and no-one should be allowed to rewrite the history of it. Which is what his book is trying to do.

93. No... Not only if we do it...
how is this obvious hypocrisy? I happen to think that they citizen's arrest is justified. The garbage that Wingnuts pass as demonstration, or spectacle is just stupid and offensive. This was not.

I didn't hear racial epithets, or cursing, or see any spitting, or brandishing of firearms. There was no threat of bodily harm, and the demonstration implied only that the letter of the law be applied in Rove's case. There was no assault and no belligerent behavior that didn't spring from an expression of argument and discourse.

I would like to meet the Wingnut responsible and intelligent enough to stage a citizen's arrest on Barack Obama because he is "not American," So far, no such reasoned playwriting has been notable on the right wing.

65. There's no relation between the two.
Carrying a firearm while shouting hateful and derogatory things at someone is not the same as calling for a citizen's arrest and calling someone a war criminal and suggesting that the letter of the law should be exercised.

One thing is vigilatism, and the other is a demonstration of legal argument.

54. If the Obama administration had not decided to
absolve war criminals and return the country to the rule of law, none of this would be necessary. However, if this is all Rove the war criminal has to deal with while he makes a fortune selling his lies, what a lucky war criminal he is.

Unfortunately for the victims of his crimes, they will never be heard from again.

I hope he is challenged like this everywhere he goes. I recall a time when no one on a Democratic board would defend Karl Rove from hearing what the world, except for a minority of rightwingers in this country, thinks of him and his crimes.

I know he's the piece of shit that he is. Does that mean I should celebrate rowdy assholes who disrupt public forums in order to make that point? No. Not unless I'm prepared to accept that some of our side's "heroes" should also be shouted down by those who disagree on the right.

I recall a time when civilized political discourse was an honorable pursuit.

74. Are the people on 'ouwr side' war criminals?
If not, then we have nothing to worry about. You are one of those who cannot distinguish between two entirely different occurrances. And you worry far too much about what the rabid rightwingnuts will think or say. Haven't you figured out that even if we were the best behaved people in the world, they would still make their lying accusations? And here you are, helping them to lie instead of fighting the lies.

There is just no comparison between telling a war criminal, who will never be held accountable for his crimes we are told by Obama, that he is a war criminal, and shouting down a Member of Congress who is holding a meeting to discuss issues with his/her constituents. Sorry you can't make the distinction.

We need more rowdy liberals making life miserable for these war criminals. I am sick to death of the wimps we have on our side always trying to be nice little choir boys, hoping the bullies won't beat us up too much.

I. don't. care. about. right-wingnuts. I don't care what they say about us and I don't care what they think. They do not earn that kind of respect.

If your concern is that you want to win the battle of who is the most badly behaved, don't worry. Supporting torture and the killing of over a million human beings would be hard for Code Pink to beat. I'll take their rowdiness over Rove's crimes and his rightwing fans any day.

This speaker who promotes his book about how 8 years of Bush's brain tore down an entire country...

This speaker, who parades around, after causing so many agents life to be put on the line and most likely murdered (we'll never know) from his outing of a NOC that was willfully, meaningfully done...

This speaker, who tries to erase history after absolutely doing his fair share to change it globally in a very, very, dangerously harmful way.

.... deserves to become the brunt of civil shaming and humiliation. He deserves to be tried for war crimes. He deserves to be haunted by every dead Iraqi's family and women and children of soldiers who's lives meant NOTHING to his mission. It STILL MEANS NOTHING. This country is just a big fucking ash tray for the likes of this guys.

Too bad about all the screaming out and raising of hell.

92. Excellent post. 'He deserves to be haunted by every dead
Iraqi's family and women and children of soldiers who's lives meant NOTHING to his mission.' Exactly right.

I rarely cheer when criminals are caught, it's just sad to me how people mess up their lives and I'm satisfied that they are someplace where they cannot hurt anyone else.

But Rove has contributed to the destruction of this country. His insidious dirty tricks and lies and twisted thinkging are what helped bring the state of political discourse to the gutter it is now in. He spawned the likes of O'Keefe, Giles and Breitbart and Beck and the rest of the rightwing noise machine.

But that was mild compared to the crimes he committed against this country during Bush's reign of terror.

So, and I hate that he is responsible for this too, I have zero sympathy for him and believe that exceptions should be made to normal means of protesting when war criminals are involved. To remain silent about what they did would be a crime in itself. Almost like ignoring one Hitler's men going around the country selling his lying diatribes and distorting history.

I can't believe there is anyone calling themselves a Democrat who would not be cheering after watching him suffer just a tiny bit and knowing what the public thinks of him. No wonder he ran. And I hate that he makes me feel this way.

I think you hit the note best when taking a note from Hitler, because when one of a dirty bunch of minions takes to going around the country and presenting the lies over and over again, it does churn up the ANGER that all here should NEVER loose site of.

I think we'll get "over" these feelings when criminals like Rove are perp walked in front of the cameras, then tried for these awful war crimes.

Sorry, Prof, but sometimes hyperbole has its merits when it draws the attention to those who like Rove, want to shove some illegal history down our collective throats.

This type of civil disobedience especially is warranted when a country has its civil rights eroded during the marketing of illegal wars, no-bid contracting, and the dirt that was swept under the rug by our then justice dept.

I hope they do it again tomorrow.

I think the most important thing that was won here was getting Rove to say that the Downing street memos were a fabrication... It's likely any of his moron followers out there who might have a hint of skepticism about the man might get educated and do a little research. That's my hope anyway. The more times Rove is forced to say "Downing Street" in public and on camera... the better.

75. Pointing out that there were no first amendment issues in play here is pretty basic
1st amendment only applies to government restricting speech. For Rove to claim his rights were being infringed was silly. Had Code Pink been arrested, their 1st amendment rights would not have been infringed either. This is pretty basic stuff, If you can not tell the difference, please repeat 8th grade civics.

Rove 's actions are independent, and I would like to see a special prosecutor for him and other Bushies, but the current administration has declined to ask for it.

10. Typical projection...
He claimed the "left" was disrespectful, didn't believe in First Amendment rights, and interruptive.

He short, he was describing himself and his neo-con fascist buddies...

12. Freedom of Speech Zones...
Remember those. Fenced off areas where people would be ALLOWED to express their first amendment rights.

Maybe KKKarl should have gone and found a safe, fenced off area, with tight security to practice his first amendment rights.

Whats good for the goose...

21. Was it a closed event?
Edited on Tue Mar-30-10 11:47 AM by florida08
No, so it wasn't like they crashed the place or misrepresented who they were. They seemed pretty controlled in their protests. The hysterical part is Rove saying:

"They don't believe in dialogue. They don't believe in courtesy. They don't believe in First Amendment rights for anyone but themselves," In light of the firing of US Attorneys, Valerie Plame and Don Siegelman I think Rove even suggesting foul play is laughable..not to mention cowardice.

98. I don't subscribe to Godwin's Law.
When your political opponents become a mirror image of those that perpetrated the Third Reich on humanity comparisons become too useful to discard.

Today's American Right wing is so much like that of the Nazi Party in 1930's Germany that we had better heed the warnings. The guy that came up with Godwin's Law (Godwin?) was likely a RW fuck himself.

I stuck around for Leno's monologue, his "Headlines" segment, and Lauren Graham's appearance.

After that, I switched to Jimmy Kimmel to see Elizabeth Mitchell.

Of course I'm being sarcastic. I can't stand Code Pink and I hope Jon Stewart makes fun of them again. Rove may suck, but I'm not going to let him make me a hypocrite. If rightwingers did this to a liberal author, 90% of DU would scream, "fascism!" Gross.

103. If rightwingers would use their right to free speech as Code Pink
did to tell a war criminal to his face that he IS a war criminal no matter how the media tries to rehabilitate him, I would gain a whole lot of respect for them.

But not to worry, they support war crimes so we'll never see them do what Code Pink does.

And not deserving the respect that a mere political author might expect. Do you think that Pol Pot or Adolf Hitler could hold a speaking tour without generating protests?

101. look, he's a war criminal
who's being tolerated because the administration hopes it will be tolerated if it does things that get viewed in a similar light. Greaaat. Kissinger, Rove, who's next. This is a case of complete failure of the justice system. Any equivalency with the teabaggers is false. They basically want to preserve the right to lynch, we want to preserve the right to live in an improving world.

If you read the comments on the youtube video you can see the hateful culture Rove's actions has created. He's caused the deaths of far more people than any serial killer. What right has he not thus abrogated? What right do we have in turn to look the other way and pretend he's tolerable? "Oh it's fine, he caused the deaths of millions for political reasons, and that's a different category from going around with an axe."

Code Pink activists are heroic.
