The University of Ottawa cancelled a speech by U.S. firebrand conservative Ann Coulter late Tuesday, just moments before its scheduled start, because organizers feared protesters would turn violent.

As people were still making their way into the venue, the building had to be evacuated when a fire alarm was triggered.

The incident followed a Monday night lecture at the University of Western Ontario, where Coulter told a Muslim student to "take a camel" as an alternative to flying.

No word as to what conveyance Coulter chose for her trip to her next speaking engagement in Calgary. A broom?

Ezra Levant, her fellow speaker, is opposed to trade unions, the minimum wage, universal health care, subsidized tuition and public pension plans (Wikipedia).

1. Seems like a bad precedent: canceling speeches for fear the protesters will turn violent. (nt)

4. It's the right thing to do if they can't secure the area.
She SHOULD be IGNORED, but she should NOT be physically attacked for what she says (note: I didn't say BELIEVE, because of everyone on the right, I personally believe she's most likely to not really believe what she writes / says, but just wants to make money and sees a ready market.)

10. Why did the police ask to have the thing called off?
Why did the POLICE ask to have the thing called off?

I was just going by the report, or is that some kind of lie?

14. Let's give this some context shall we...

This whole charade came about by the machinations of one Ezra Levant, arch conservative, a.k.a. Reform, political activist, conservative blogger member of the Fraser Institute. Think Glen Beck light, advocate for privatization of the Canada Pension Plan, elimination of subsidized tuition, dismantling the minimum wage laws and universal health care and orchestra leader for the Anne Coulter Ottawa gig.

Mr. Levant got a little exercised when the University V.P. stated "You will realize that Canadian Law puts reasonable limits on the freedom of expression. For example, promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate but could in fact lead to criminal charges."

As for the physical threat to Man Coulter and the police shutdown? It was not the police who "shut it down."

Ann Coulter's Adventures in Ottawa: So, what happened last night?
March 24, 2010 1:30 PM

By Kady O'Malley

...First, contrary to what Coulter seems to suggest in a brief phone interview with Macleans.ca scribe Colby Cosh, it was not the police who "shut it down." I spoke with Ottawa Police Services media relations officer Alain Boucher this morning, and he told me, in no uncertain terms, that it was her security team that made the decision to call off the event. "We gave her options" -- including, he said, to "find a bigger venue" -- but "they opted to cancel ... It's not up to the Ottawa police to make that decision."  ...

...As for Coulter's claim that the police "had been warning my bodyguard all day that they were putting up on Facebook: 'Bring rocks, bring sticks, you gotta hurt Ann Coulter tonight, don't let her speak,'" Boucher confirmed that the police were monitoring the situation - although how, exactly, he didn't specify - but was unable to provide any example of such a threat, as he did not have that information, although he assured me that if a complaint were lodged, the police would "surely" investigate, but he didn't know whether or not that had occurred. I haven't been able to turn up any of those alleged threats -- not on Facebook, and not on the unspecified "liberal blogs" that she has since cited as the source, so if anyone can point me to an example, please do so in the comments...

...  They added: "At no time was there any evidence of physical threat.  To the extent that there were safety issues, it was because you had 600 people coming out for a talk and the organizers had absolutely no logistical plan to handle it.  People annoyed like they get annoyed waiting to get into a jammed hockey game.  But no 'threat' environment.

2. Anne is outraged...
...Hundreds of students described as "threatening" crowded the entrance to the hall where she was scheduled to speak as part of a three-city tour of Canada. Inside the hall, a conservative political activist said it would be "physically dangerous" for Coulter to appear. About 100 people in the hall shouted "Shame" and "We want Ann."

Outside, a protest organizer was pleased, saying that what Coulter practices is not free speech, but hate speech. Protesters mockingly chanted "Goodbye Ann Coulter."

Coulter was outraged, telling The Washington Times that such a thing has never happened to her before.

3. Wow - instant martyr status and more TV appearances in the US
I wouldn't be surprised if she pulled the fire alarm herself to grab a few more headlines. She has sort of been upstaged by other right wing female nut jobs like Bachmann and Palin recently and she had to do something to get back in the headlines. SHe'll be back on fox next week boo hooing about how the nasty liberals wouldn't let her speak.

Also, the liberal media can now shake their heads and tsk tsk about the "violence from both ends of the political spectrum". Providing cover for all the REAL violence threatened by tea baggers and others against Democrats.

8. I don't use the term "cunt" often, but it sure applies to "it". It's good......
...........to see the Canadian education system is a lot better than ours. We should send Arne Duncan back to Australia and copy the Canada system in education AND healthcare.
