If you don't know the name of Edward Bernays or Walter Lippmann, you don't know which thoughts in your head are yours and which were made up for you.

Bernays served on the Creel Commission that helped Woodrow Wilson sell World War I. he went on to become the father of modern public relations. His observations about how propaganda works form the basis of our advertising, political campaigns, and war propaganda.

The big difference between advertising and public relations is that you recognize advertising. Public relations seems like something that just spontaneously happens even though it is as scripted as the commercial.
