From C&L:

Look closely, ladies and gentlemen, because the Republican party is the face of evil. How could anyone in their right mind oppose unemployment benefits during the worst recession in living memory? Simple: Because when a Republican says people won't look for jobs because they're on unemployment, he's really complaining they still have too much dignity to accept slave labor at slave wages.

Because as always, the GOP is about cheap, disposable labor with no legal protections. With the help of Blue Dog Democrats, they may eventually get their way. But for now, they'll try to strip away whatever shred of dignity a working person has left.

And really, we can't have that, can we? The little people might get ideas above their station:

A debate on the Senate floor Monday over unemployment compensation crystallized, at least for a moment, the divide between the two parties in Washington.

Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, the Republican whip, argued that unemployment benefits dissuade people from job-hunting "because people are being paid even though they're not working."

Unemployment insurance "doesn't create new jobs. In fact, if anything, continuing to pay people unemployment compensation is a disincentive for them to seek new work," Kyl said during debate over whether unemployment insurance and other benefits that expired amid GOP objections Sunday should be extended.

"I'm sure most of them would like work and probably have tried to seek it, but you can't argue that it's a job enhancer. If anything, as I said, it's a disincentive. And the same thing with the COBRA extension and the other extensions here," said Kyl.

1. He is right in a sense. My unemployment has kept
me from that life of crime I always fantasized about. You see, you CANNOT get turned down for a job as a criminal. But there are other, shall we say, "disincentives" to taking up that profession.

2. What about the $700 billion dollar "disincentive" for huge financials to take a
look in the mirror and stop taking huge risks with other people's money? Nobody gave a shit
about the moral hazard there, did they asshole?

What a bunch of bullshit.

8. I met Kyl at his office once.
We had gone in to express our support of a public options and the person behind the window told us to give our names and such to be put on a list for the Senator. While we were doing so, he came walking in with his bodyguard, saw us and come over to us smiling. I had on an Arizona State University shirt which caught his eye, and he offered his hand. I told him ASU was my second team, but that my number one was University of Southern Mississippi and asked him if he would help arrange a game between ASU and USM (jokingly did I do so, but thought it an opening to more serious discussion) and he said yeah he would like to see a football game between the two since he had friends that were Golden Eagle fans. Feeling comfy, he asked why I was in Arizona, which I told him I had to leave Mississippi due to the Katrina Debacle, which brought a sense of unease to his face. The person with me, then told him, we wanted to talk about healthcare insurance reform and the need for a public option. He told the woman I was with that he wouldn't talk about that except if it was a personal issue concerning her or her family. She told him about her daughter that was expecting her first child and the fear that her insurance wouldn't pay for her child being borned. Kyl said that he had a doctor on staff just for such things that he could get the doctor to take care of that problem since the doctor knew how to handle the insurance companies. We thought as we got into the car to leave, isn't it wierd, he didn't want government in between you and your doctor, but here he has someone on staff to do just that. Yeah Kyl is playing a game, see how I saved you, but don't pay attention to the fact that I help make sure you NEEDED my help by not letting stuff pass that would reduce that need. Great gimmack isn't it?

10. Sure unemployment is a dissincentive,
starve them and kick them out of their homes, then they'll take anything you offer them, especially the poverty wage no benefit jobs you want them to take.
