Our country has a very real problem with police brutality. And nobody can claim ignorance any longer with videos posted daily of the abuses.

They should be held to a higher standard than average citizens and it's past time for us to demand they act responsibly.

1. all too often do we see little men in big bodies
use their authority as way to punish individuals for as little as this. This guy has no right to be a cop or even a security guard.

25. It's much worse than some random adult.
This was a person with the supposed responsibility of protecting these students. He is armed, and trained, and is a far deadlier opponent that most in the general public.

What would a police officer have to do with enforcing the dress code in the first place? If there was no officer on the scene, would they have called the police because his shirt was not tucked in? If so schools, and the police officers in those schools, have changed in a major way, and not for the better.

That would seem to be a teacher, or administrative action, at its worst. Unless the student did something during the confrontation to warrant police intervention perhaps. But this? This is absurd. I don't want armed people like this enforcing a school's dress code with my children.

No way I would send my kid back there. Ever.

Our police departments have taken in some bad guy bullies. We need to go back to the days of protect and serve. I hold those who abide by that credo in great esteem. It's a difficult job. But we need to weed out the bullies.

Granted, I'm blinder than sixteen bats and I don't know enough computer-ese to slow down this newsfeed SO... the African-American kid gets beaten for not having a shirt tucked in and a white kid (or is that an adult... a teacher... can't tell!!!!!) in SHORTS appears to join in the beating fray.

I've been out of high school since the Jurassic Era so when did shorts get a pass on a dress code list and "outside shirts" not... ???

I hope some sharper eyes can help me out with this one!

Yeah. There are two guys who sort of dance around with the cop, possibly trying to help him (though why anyone would think the cop needs help beats me). There is one big guy in a striped shirt and a smaller guy in shorts and a light-colored shirt.

What I noticed straight off is that both of those fellows have their shirts hanging out, too. Even if they are teachers, should they be exempt from the dress code – especially a code so viciously enforced against the students?

Something else is at work – possibly “cops and little people,” racism, or even roid rage.

Eventually we will learn what happened. I doubt that anyone can make this disappear.

17. Having worked with youth in certain situations that called
for restraints, here is my take on this tape.

First of all, I am not defending the policeman. I see no cause for a restraint because the youth, as far as I can tell, is not doing anything to put himself or others in danger. Second of all, no restraint should start with a body slam or punches thrown (although I did not really see the punches thrown, action was too fast for my old eyes). A restraint if absolutely necessary should begin with the least amount of force and only go further due to a violent resistance. Something like that. I've been out of it for quite a while.

Now, I will say what I think might have happened. I think the cop saw the student with his shirt un-tucked and started telling him to tuck it in with an authoritative tone and probably some name calling which grew more strong/racist with time. The student perhaps ignored him at first but at some point could have began talking back. (I get that opinion from watching the student's body movements) The student not following his orders and perhaps even talking back led to the cop getting more fired up. The reason for the violence (in my opinion) was the kid was Black, he didn't follow the white man's orders, and he dared to talk back. JMHO

The cop needs to be put away, maximum security. He's a dangerous SOB. I hope the other cops in that town are just as adamant
that he be put away, because one cop like that reflects on all of them. I sure as hell hope that he's the exception in that
town and not the rule.

54. Self defense, of course...
If he were a "regular citizen," then what would be the reaction? "Citizen saves citizen from brutal attack," but since he's a "cop," then he can get away with this kind of attack? At least not held to the same standards as a violent thug?

And where did I say it would be "justified?" In this day and age of tasering diabetics, old women, and children, or a guy with no legs confined to a wheelchair; in this day and age of "summary executions" for breaking and entering by private citizens (Joe Horn of Pasadena, Texas, comes to mind); in this day and age when a cop and kill a suspect by breaking his neck because the suspect might have something in his mouth that the cop wanted him to spit out; in this day and age of cops beating up adolescent girls, I'm just surprised that someone hasn't pull out a gun and popped one of the offenders.

Just surprised it hasn't happened yet...

And how do you define, "the cop deserve to be handled harshly?" Should he be tried and put in jail if found guilty just like a regular citizen?

The kid obviously told the cop to go fuck himself or something to that effect. Any adult who can't handle something like that without committing a battery shouldn't be wearing a uniform, be anywhere near children and should probably be in restraints.

Not this time.
What else is there to tell? The kid could've been telling the cop to go fuck himself sideways and it would not have justified what was done. If the cop doesn't face severe consequences for this then there is no justice in this country.

36. Okay, I used to teach where we had a strict dress code.
There is no way in heck that kind of behavior would've been tolerated from any teacher, administrator, or policeman (they covered our dances). Not ever.

The others helping the cop seem to be teachers, from their size and what they do, but also horrifying is that no one walking by seems to notice or care. I would've taken one look at that and turned around to get the principal or asst. principal immediately.

My gut as a teacher says that the young man probably was talking back a bit (kids never like being reminded to tuck in their shirts), but there is never, ever, not in a million years any kind of reason for a violent reaction to any backtalk.

we have to start bringing weapons charges against these pieces of shit. The people they attack know they're in danger because of the weapons, and the monsters know they have an advantage because of the weapons. That should be enough to bring weapons assault charges.

http://groups.google.com/group/talk.politics.misc/browse_thread/thread/d51b63a51eb0973a

Cop who assaulted teen now in jail on rape charge; shot ex-wife's
new husband 24 times in 'self defense'

The officer who brutally beat special needs student Marshawn Pitts has
been identified as 38-year-old Christopher Lloyd, according to Chicago
Breaking News, which spoke to Lloyd's father.

The news agency reported that Lloyd is currently in jail after being
charged with the rape of a woman he knew and is facing a 20-year sentence
should he be convicted.

The Chicago Tribune-backed service adds: "A lawsuit filed by his ex-wife,
Nicole McKinney, last summer alleges he gunned down her new husband
Cornel McKinney in front of their children outside their home on the 6100
block of South Langley Avenue on Feb. 17, 2008."

An autopsy revealed Lloyd shot the man 24 times, the agency found. He was
not jailed at the time as Chicago police accepted his explanation that
the killing was in self-defense.
